smallpipe··on Automatically tagging politician when they use their phone on the livestreams
These people are elected and paid more than enough to pay attention. If they can’t be bothered doing their job, we’ll elect someone else who can.

Same here on an M1. If you find a solution…
smallpipe··on A Year of Telepathy
“This kind of comments” is pointing out a completely valid reason for which you wouldn’t want to do business with a company, let alone have them implant something in your brain.
smallpipe··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
Anothe proof that self-driving cars with human backups should never be allowed on public roads. It's going to be used unsafely because it encourages such behaviour.
smallpipe··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Most NPC thing I’ve ever read.

You’ve built a screen recording software and you’re calling employees of Atlassian NPC.

Whilst being an Elon Musk fan.

Paying to be brought up a mountain and being shit at even that.

Find a shrink

smallpipe··on Hoarder: Self-hostable bookmark-everything app
I use it when I need to get a table or something from a webpage. Works really well for small stuff.
smallpipe··on How we made our AI code review bot stop leaving nitpicky comments
> Would you not want your coworkers to have AI look at their PRs, have them address the relevant comments

God no. Review is where I teach more junior people about the code base. And where I learn from the more senior people. Either of us spending time making the AI happy just to be told we’re solving the wrong problem is a ridiculous waste of time.

Of course you can. A good drummer will not deviate from beat by that much.
smallpipe··on PSA: If you're a fan of ATmega, try AVR Dx
Yes.
smallpipe··on Why use ECC? (2015)
That relies on hardware support in the TLB. If you need TLB support for "please don't corrupt this page" you might as well get hardware with ECC in caches and RAMs
smallpipe··on Indonesia's e-bike shops are building their own batteries
Are those LiPo or LiIon? The articles mention both, and the image looks like LiIon
smallpipe··on How I keep myself alive using Golang
Yes! It's a great article, but why does anyone want a picture where the sun somehow manages to melt the glazing bar to illustrate an article about diabetes ? Or a big "Raise incident" button with all the other buttons being meaningless rubbish ?
smallpipe··on React Is the New IBM (2023)
Dismissing a compiler improvement is weird. Facebook has presumably millions of lines of React everywhere. Legacy tech is a thing, and most tech is legacy. Usability and familiarity matter. The tech is a collateral of the business, and it doesn't matter as long as it works.

Compiler "hack" or not, the business doesn't care, the business is about revenue and maintenance burden.

smallpipe··on Git tips and tricks
> Eventually, I figured out that it was operating on diffs, not snapshots

The snapshot include all the history that led to the current snapshot. So even if you did a squash instead of dropping, you're changing everything that depends on that

smallpipe··on Show HN: Atopile – Design circuit boards with code
So your Ato language defines a schematic, but how do I go from a schematic to a layout? Is that auto-routed ? Or do I import the schematic into kicad?

An example of the produced layout would be interesting.

smallpipe··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
With a yubikey everything is stored on the key and the phone is just a terminal, so it travels between phones. Now if you lose the key that's another issue :)
smallpipe··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
Couldn’t that be achieved with a mechanical timer switch and zero lines of code ?
smallpipe··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
Monkey patching vendor code. They agreed their code didn’t work and produced wrong results, but the correct version would be slower, so they didn’t want to change it.

So I dynamically replaced the part of their code that was wrong. That monkey patch has run years and is still going :)

smallpipe··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
Where did they get that map from? Burundi is French speaking, and member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie [1], and, just like DRC, used to be a colony of Belgium

smallpipe··on We investigated France's mass profiling machine
Did you read the article? The code was obtained using a FOI request, and the model targets vulnerable making mistakes in claiming benefits rather rather than actual fraud.

Which bit is the one you're impressed with ? The part where you personally will be fine?

smallpipe··on One man’s quest to end cheating in virtual cycling
Whoever made that graph for esport revenue should have their excel rights revoked. If you don’t look at the legends, it looks like a 4x increase over a few years, which is definitely not right
smallpipe··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
Mine was as simple as it gets: a list in Reminders, recurring reminders every 2 weeks/1 month/3 month depending on how close we are/how frequently they have interesting things to say.

If I see the reminder I try to call/text that person when I have some down time. I tick the box when done, or if I think I've seen talked to them organically recently enough.

I'd be cool if it could somehow tell from my call/whatsapp log/calendar how long it's actually been, but it being a fuzzy is a feature too.

And as you say, definitely worth it.

smallpipe··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
I wanted something similar so I made myself a list in the Reminders app. I recommend doing it, it’s made keeping up with friends who moved to another country easier.

> I suppose the other aspect is knowing that I trust my coworkers. They don't (typically) do something for no good reason

This so much. Depending on the git blame, I'll either remove it blindly or actually think about it way more.

smallpipe··on Brute-forcing a macOS user’s real name from a browser using mDNS
Eww this is gross. I'm impressed it manages to do it on a stock iphone in incognito with two different IPs, surely it must look like any other iphone
