slmjkdbtl··on I joined the IndieWeb, here's what I learned
> MySpace: in 2019, during a server migration, it lost all the music uploaded during its first 12 years, more than 50 million songs from 14 million artists.

How much of these are archived by third party? If not it's huge loss to humanity...

slmjkdbtl··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
Great programmers often also have great personal website design, everything is so clear and not one bit of redundance.

I love their stuff, but curious if anyone besides them actually use uxn to make stuff

I'm daily user of the old 3-piece suite, should I be worried they will be taken away from me in the near future?
slmjkdbtl··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
> React looks cleaner. It reads better at first glance. But that readability comes at a cost: you're trading explicit simplicity for abstraction complexity.

Not always, SolidJS code can look the same as React code, but what goes under the hood is very simple and straightforward.

slmjkdbtl··on Uxntal: A programming language for the Uxn virtual machine
They did exactly what I've been wanting to do and did a great job, I'm happy for them, they must be having so much fun writing softwares.
slmjkdbtl··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
> it came from other people convincing newcomers

Yeah I think you're right

slmjkdbtl··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Yeah they themselves are functions but how they're called are managed by a complicated system, I think treating them as a separate new concept is less misleading than calling them plain functions
slmjkdbtl··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
It's very sad this is what's happening. React hooks was a major innovation but a very bad one, people in the front-end world seem to value more about radical innovation and marketing buzzwords like "functional UI" (which is not true) than truly evaluating a system. The earliest momentum started from trend chasing, also a lot of people use React because they see the JSX looks pretty nice in the examples.
slmjkdbtl··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Based on how they are run they are completely not just ordinary JavaScript functions, hook era components are also not just JavaScript functions, it's a very complicated system. React calling them "just functions" is untrue, just marketing buzz words, and it leads developers into traps.

Wow a fast scripting language with normal syntax and type checking.. Really hope this can take off and be a valid Lua alternative.

I can't tell if the author is for the idea or not, it seems they're for the idea but don't want to hear people to brag about it?
slmjkdbtl··on I Built My Own Audio Player
This looks great! Will give a try later. For iPhone sync can it sync to the built-in Music app music library?
slmjkdbtl··on I Built My Own Audio Player
Managing local music with Music.app and syncing with Finder iPhone sync still works good for me, but Music.app does seem unmaintained for a couple years now with some annoying bugs since the terrible Big Sur rewrite. Despite the flaws this combination is still the best music library management + mobile sync solution I've seen (plz recommend!), but I feel eventually will have to write a system myself since the software is not maintained and not cross platform.
slmjkdbtl··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
I feel there's a cliff drop of quality in both hardware and software with the release of Big Sur, the version where I believe they rewrote a lot of the softwares. It's very obvious when I replaced my 2015 MacBook Pro with a 2020 MacBook Pro M1, everything downgraded, but now I'm getting used to software being clunky and buggy.

I always really liked a lot of apple software, like Preview.app. It's a viewer for almost everything, images, documents, 3d models, but it doesn't feel bloat at all, I'm glad Apple doesn't seem to change the app much. Also shocked the first time I found out TextEdit.app is also a WYSIWYG HTML editor.

slmjkdbtl··on Calendar.txt
To me the biggest block for using any plain text format for daily stuff is I need a good mobile - laptop sync method that I can easily read / write and manage files on both mobile and laptop, does anyone have any recommendation? The best choice I can think right now is SimpleNote which I've been using for notes for a long time, but is there a way I can actually use .txt file instead of text been stored somewhere in a database.
slmjkdbtl··on Sunsetting Create React App
So is there still an officially recommended way to create a simple static react web page without big fullstack frameworks now?
slmjkdbtl··on React 19
I think the class era is a decent, normal, boring and useful UI framework, however hooks are very difficult to use:

- How things actually work are very hidden and unintuitive

- Very easy to make mistakes, easy to write low performance UI

- High cognitive load, constantly thinking about how many times things run, what's in dependency arrays, what should go in useCallbacks and useEffect etc

- Overused, part of community sometimes encourage people to use React and some dependencies that's unnecessary for the project, only adding overhead and complexity

- Easy to mix business logic with UI logic

slmjkdbtl··on Learn perfect pitch in 15 years
I have some perfect pitch due to having piano training for 2 years when I was around 8, started playing tenor saxophone 2 years ago, because of perfect pitch I had to learn the instrument as a concert pitch instrument instead of a Bb one, because thinking about a C but hearing a Bb will drive me crazy.
slmjkdbtl··on If not React, then what?
React code looks good for clicker example, when building real application I think it's much harder to read than vanilla JS, especially when hooks and all the dependency arrays flying around, constantly worried about how many times will things fire and super easy to make mistakes no matter the skill level.
slmjkdbtl··on If not React, then what?
Java is way way better than React (hooks) in this regard. Boring tech is good, but React is the opposite of boring tech, it innovates new way to write software, but ends up in disaster.
slmjkdbtl··on If not React, then what?
> Frameworkism isn't delivering. The answer isn't a different tool, it's the courage to do engineering.

While frameworkism has bad sides, React (hooks) is bad in very unique and particular ways, sometimes switching a different tool is the answer.
