slimbods··on Why many scientists are now saying climate change is an all-out 'emergency'
We've spent a lot on nuclear and it's still too expensive for all but the largest countries to afford. We've spent a lot on wind and solar and every country can afford them.
slimbods··on EV Battery Factory Will Require So Much Energy It Needs a Coal Plant to Power It
Look at the reporters article history...
slimbods··on About GitHub’s use of your data
This applies to 'pro & team' paid services too.
slimbods··on ChatGPT can in fact ask you questions
No, the models are quite different. Ask Bing chat to write you a letter and it'll say no. Chatgpt will do tasks like this quite happily.
slimbods··on Show HN: GPT-3 based coaching for managers in tech
Tried it. Didn't feel the natural conversation that ChatGPT has, felt more like a regular old 'how can I help you' chatbot. Asked a few questions, picked out some keywords and pasted a very generic bit of advice that wasn't really conversational and didn't seem to take into account information already provided.
slimbods··on Ask HN: How do you manage – and remember to manage – your to-do list in 2022?
Just a one note text page. I have a normal list, and linked a set of sub lists that link from the top. Then I have a 'today' list of the really important stuff that must get done that day.

The Activescan++ extension for burp has been updated, but you need to do a manual update to get it:

slimbods··on Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile – Early Features
Looks pretty factual. They've been quite clear that it's a 'reasonable assumption'
slimbods··on Playstation 5 root keys obtained
Want to game? Sit on sofa, press 1 button, game.
slimbods··on Is alternate-day fasting superior to calorie restriction in lean adults?
That's great if we all live in control rooms. The part 'calories in calories out' misses is that what you eat, how you eat, where you eat, how your body reacts to what you eat, who you eat with, where you live, what food is available, the price of food....all impacts how much you eat.
slimbods··on Vaccine-Induced Covid-19 Mimicry Syndrome
Thanks. In that case, why doesn't the virus itself cause thrombatic side effects?
slimbods··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
A very basic but effective home gym: A barbell and 140kg of bumper plates, Squat/bench stands, bench, slam ball, dumbbells and a small range of kettlebells. The whole thing cost about the equivalent of a year's gym membership but have lasted two years so far and show no sign of wear.

Being able to lift something heavy on a regular basis over the last year has been a massive boost for my mental and physical health. You don't need expensive gear, some of my best workouts are from a metal bar wedged over a loft hatch, you just need to have something and use it.

slimbods··on 1 in 5 EV owners in California switched back to gas because charging is a hassle
Home charging is great, but it only works out for people who have off street parking. That leaves a lot of people without off street parking that must use public chargers only, and that's very inconvenient.
slimbods··on Ask HN: What's your keyboard and what you love and hate about it?
Keychron K2. It's the closest to a 'do everything well' keyboard I could get. It's wireless at home, but wired at work (usb C too). It's mechancial and feels good. It's got a switch for mac & pc layouts. It's got a good utility illumination without looking too gamer. Only thing I don't like about it is it's a bit thick/high, means you have to use a rest with it.
slimbods··on Ask HN: Can Salesforce be a long term career?
There's two kinds. The certs do need paying for and test centres. Trailheads are free and give you badges. These are great as an intro, but I think many employers want the real certs.
slimbods··on Ask HN: Can Salesforce be a long term career?
They do spend a lot of time telling admins that you don't need to do any of that scary coding thing...until you do.
slimbods··on Bank of England to explore a potential Central Bank Digital Currency
If a business wants to hold cash outside of a bank, it has to use bank notes. This would give them the option of holding digital currency directly.

Also you'd expect a ground up design of a digital first currency to include much lower cost of transfers enabling micro transactions and much better speed to settle.

slimbods··on Äike – First e-scooter developed and assembled in Europe
They tend to be expensive, and there's a definite skills barrier vs a scooter.
slimbods··on Äike – First e-scooter developed and assembled in Europe
Bikes aren't great for the 'last mile' where you might get off a train and have a bit further to go. You can ride a scoot in pedestrianised areas too normaly, and you can't on a bike. Far harder to stash a bike behind your desk at the office, much easier with a scoot.

Of course the downside of this convenience is stealability.

slimbods··on I Like That the Boat Is Stuck
It's a ship not a boat.
slimbods··on Is that ship still stuck?
Seems like the risk assessment wasn't good if hitting the bank results in this kind of outcome.
slimbods··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Spending more time outside, particularly in rural settings. I to used to be a couch/desk potato. Habitually spending time out in the green either walking, running, cycling or just digging stuff in the garden has made me happier and healthier.

Nice reference, but like the OP article, it really goes light on security. I feel that's the hardest part of getting an API released.

slimbods··on Drug for treating obesity cuts body weight by 20%
Well said. I'm overweight not obese and it takes a very great deal of effort to keep it that way. I don't have problems with lazyness, stupidity or being weak willed in any other aspects of my life, but once I start eating I simply cannot stop.

Fasting has taken me from obese to overweight, not eating is the only thing that works, but when I start up again, I eat for two!

slimbods··on Drug for treating obesity cuts body weight by 20%
As Derek says at the end, there is an oral version of the drug.
slimbods··on Time-Restricted Eating in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome: Study
We're complicated objects and there's no one answer for everyone. Counting calories works for those who can stick to the regime, and many can't, fail, and end up worse off. IF offers a very simple alternative if it's between the hours of 12 and 8, eat, else don't eat.

Counting calories isn't often healthy either, as not all calories are the same. Sure, you could live off eating only rice cakes, and lose weight. Would you be more healthy? My 'almost fits everyone' diet advice as someone who lost a lot of weight is:

-Eat less frequently, take longer brakes between meals.

-Don't eat unless you feel hungry

-Eat a varied diet, mostly plants

-Eat things with few ingredients, preferably only one

-Avoid alcohol

slimbods··on Ask HN: Is there a better way to document complex software architectures?
Make a tool that generates architectural diagrams from the code?
slimbods··on Make your own sourdough
Nice article, thanks. Losing your starter can be painful as it takes at least a week to build a new one. So it's good to have a backup; build a bit extra then freeze it. Should you lose your starter, you can defrost the backup and carry on right away. Especially handy if you go on holiday or can't bake for a few weeks.
