sli··on Mazda slaps developer with cease-and-desist for DIY smart home integration
Executives are necessarily responsible for the people under them, that's part of the job.
sli··on Yarn 4.0
Same here. I haven't done frontend in a few years now but I was shocked when the top comment was saying most people don't even use Yarn 2. I had no idea Yarn was past 1.x.
sli··on Pepper X
I find it extremely appropriate that high concentrations of capsaicin in a chili manifest as little pointy spikes, which is why anything from a ghost pepper and up looks extremely mean.
sli··on Ketamine's effect on depression may hinge on hope
I didn't watch a lot of House MD but I believe I know what's being referred to.

There was an arc where House was administered ketamine as part of a treatment for his leg and he started walking without his cane, suggesting that his condition was being caused by psychological trauma long after his leg had physically recovered.

sli··on HVM updates: simplifications, finally runs on GPUs, 80x speedup on RTX 4090
Someone did run Linux in a pixel shader on VRChat.

sli··on Show HN: A simple Pastebin Clone using Deno
If the key is just in the URL, what's stopping them from simply obtaining the key out of their access logs and decrypting whatever they want?
sli··on Tell HN: "Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube”
This is conflating two otherwise unrelated things that just look similar if you squint.
sli··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
I checked, Amazon does indeed sell tiny violins. They are keychains that make sounds. Unless there's a claim here that the FTC is working directly for, say, Walmart, everyone else benefits from Amazon being brought down a handful of pegs.

Sorry if it makes things hard for some AWS customers, but eggs, baskets, etc.

sli··on The spotted lanternfly is now in Illinois
Seems like a reasonable speculation. The ability to smell that asparagus smell in urine is also genetic, if I remember correctly.
sli··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
Shortsightedness like this tends to backfire spectacularly in the long-term.
sli··on Nue.js: Rethinking Reactivity
Now I'm curious. Why do you suppose the render loop's performance was so important to the React team, then? It surely wasn't for no reason, and I'm not going to be convinced that React is more complex "just because."
sli··on XML is better than YAML – Hear me out
When I can get away with it, I like to use JSON5.

https://www.npmjs.com/package/json5

sli··on Glove80 Ergonomic Keyboard
Browns (and Clears, my preference) are pretty darn loud in my experience despite being only tactile and not also clicky. You can help with O-rings, but I agree with the above commenter that silent switches are probably an ideal solution. Well, assuming they meant to imply that.
sli··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
No, they paid a service to do some of the more fiddly work for them.

I use the same service, but for just federal, and they are upfront about state filings costing $15 rather than surprising you at the end like Intuit/TurboTax.

sli··on Mexico’s underground vanilla economy
A single person cannot guard 15 acres of crops. The arrogance is the assumption that the farmers are so stupid that they didn't even try this "simple solution" that would never work.
sli··on Toki Pona: an attempted universal language with only ~120 words
Top comment is indeed a fairly long timestamped list of errors in the video.
sli··on Tesla Jailbreak Lets You Unlock Free Upgrades [video]
You gave up those kinds of choices when you agreed to a Tesla.
sli··on America’s largest tool company couldn’t make a wrench in America
> When you are shopping you implicitly want others wages as low as possible.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but this isn't true stated like this. I'm surely not representative of most shoppers, but I don't want wages lower, I want the actual workers to get the largest cut of what I spend. Higher ups are salaried and have a guaranteed stable income which is not anything like an hourly wage. Lowering prices by simply cutting bonuses to people who already have a stable income is not at all the same as wanting hourly employees to take pay cuts to make your junk cheaper.

sli··on Let the internet be grimy
Because it's a relatively safe level of risk compared to, say, 4chan's /b/. People love to dabble in risk in safe ways. I'd argue that's what many genres of fiction are explicitly for, e.g. horror, violent games, etc.
sli··on Perl first commit: a “replacement” for Awk and sed
The most lovely language that I never want to use again.
sli··on Software engineers hate code
No analogy is good when you dissect it to pieces. Being perfect encapsulations of reality is not the point of analogy, they are simply there to increase understanding.
sli··on First cases of malaria in the US in 20 years
Yeah, this is the first of probably a few diseases that will be coming back to, among others, the US as global temperatures rise.
sli··on Godot 4.1
The official C# bindings are .NET, not Mono. They were using Mono in older versions, though.
sli··on Godot 4.1
I would say Heartbeast's courses are overall much better than your typical tutorial content, primarily because they are structured and built like courses rather than tutorials. I paid for a couple of his courses a while back after doing one of his free ones and do not regret it, they were excellent.
sli··on Reddit Doubles Down
I think it's tripling down at this point. Announcement, maintaining it during the AMA, and not saying it's going to pass.
sli··on Reddit AskHistorians ceases participation indefinitely
I don't think anyone has a reasonable belief otherwise. Part of the point is to make reddit take that drastic of an action against its own users by removing mods and forcing subreddits to reopen.
sli··on Gren – an Elm fork
I've long moved beyond Elm, but I'd be surprised is anyone really used reactor. It seemed so completely unfit for purpose and was almost immediately useless if your project was more than a single file. elm-live was simply a requirement no matter how much I tried to avoid adding in extra tooling.
sli··on Turn dumb tweets into cuneiform tablets
Or perhaps Latin?
sli··on How Reddit became the enemy [video]
Much more than $5, closer to $10. He still has to afford to live, as he currently does with Apollo's current subscriptions, plus pay reddit's API costs. This is according to his comments on reddit about this situation.

$10/month to use a free website on your phone is just not a very attractive deal at the end of the day.

sli··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
I'm willing to spend a lot on VR, but Apple would have to absolutely blow everything else out of the water at that price point. I have no doubt that a lot of Apple enthusiasts will buy them, but they've certainly chosen a specific market.

You could buy a full Index kit, get the wireless upgrade for it, and then a full Vive Pro kit and its wireless upgrade, and have spent about the same amount of money.
