sleepdreamy··on The US “labor shortage” is just a wage shortage (2021)
Corporations get billion dollar buyouts practically every market swing but its an issue if everyday Americans get a couple thousand over a summer? That's what the issue is?

Get over yourself

sleepdreamy··on Ask HN: Why are you here?

sleepdreamy··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
As someone who works in the MSP space, Enterprise basically runs this country from a business perspective. I'm not even kidding.

Microsoft has a monopoly on Corporate Domains/OS as it is.

sleepdreamy··on Microsoft employees say 'golden boy' executives are still running wild
Thank you...
sleepdreamy··on Ask HN: What Happened to Reddit?
This is subjective, no? I have no clue which subreddits you frequent. I work in IT and as such follow a bunch of related subs. Those subs are perfectly fine if not helpful in a lot of cases. It depends on what you're consuming like..most things.
sleepdreamy··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
This is subjective. I played FFXI for over a decade and despite it being more or less a second job, I truly loved coming home and hopping on and see what we were fighting for that evening.

Some people want that experience. You grow close to people when you talk to them every day for over a year. Comradery is formed etc;

You couldn't level up without 6 players to a party. Needed a healer, tank, DD. Everyone had a purpose, everyone had a job. If one person died, we all died. They just don't make MMO's like they used to unfortunately. Everyone gets a trophy is new style of play. It's bad for the integrity/soul of the MMO's but money talks so it is what it is.

sleepdreamy··on Morrowind 20-year anniversary book
Agreed. Mind boggling experience that I've never been able to replicate after the first genuine play-through. Granted I was young and Fable more or less had a great impact on me as well.

Games feel...not as great as before. Ghost of Tsushima was excellent but it's been a while since a game has truly made me go, "Whoa!"

sleepdreamy··on MI officials fast-track bridge fix after man says it 'collapsed under my feet'
This is correct - Through marriage I've met some insanely powerful people who fix our highways/build bridges on the East Coast. These mother fuckers are loaded and they're seriously assholes seeing as I would've never met them by chance and people with money stick together. This is the true answer. There are only a small number of companies who have the logistics/money to actually bid and complete projects like these. It also takes years to do one project, so when there is only a small number of companies who can ever legally / viability afford these jobs this is what we get. Every sector seems to have a big 5. Tech, Finance, Construction, etc;
sleepdreamy··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
It's never too late to learn something complex. If you tell yourself you will be mediocre/average then those will be your results. I'm 30 so not old by any means but - the secret is to obsess over the thing you want to learn intimately. Obsession beats practice any day.

If you have trouble finding that obsession - you weren't that interested anyway. Let your mind decide what you truly enjoy and want to grasp. Listen to yourself

sleepdreamy··on I'm an addict
As someone who was religious when they are younger but no longer, why? I used to be a devout Christian until I went exploring the world and saw the unreal amount of massive suffering, imbedded greed etc; If god is real, he is a cruel god.

We have the technology and means to ensure every person on this earth does not go hungry and has a safe place to sleep at night. But humans do human stuff.

You probably pass plenty of homeless in your daily life and never look/think of them again. Yet somehow religion constantly preaches harmony and giving to others. Most religious people I know are inherently greedy and abide by Capitalistic morals and act as such.

I guess I could create a bubble for myself and not care about others at an inherently deep level like most humans on earth do.

What would a religious Scholar/Teachings do for me if I can plainly see that teachings are only followed when convenient or warped to fit my world narrative? What would you suggest?

sleepdreamy··on Apple introduces new professional training to support growing IT workforce
My literal thought. If you know...you know. lol
sleepdreamy··on Unsolved problems in economics
I mean...sort of? You're right about everything...but the way you portray it is..not so black and white. Life is quite nuanced.
sleepdreamy··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
You don't like jobs of any kind? Hopefully you have an inheritance because when your parents die you're in for a rude awakening.
sleepdreamy··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
Agreed. Majority of people are jealous creatures. It's embedded into American individualism/Capitalism.

It's an end sum game of who can acquire more money/resources if we break away all the bullshit.

I don't share my wins because the majority of people are jealous creatures

sleepdreamy··on Tell HN: I was permanently banned from eBay in one hour
I've been using/selling on Ebay for several years. I've had zero issues. Although don't get me started on Paypal being garbage.

Maybe there is more you aren't telling us, or maybe you're being honest. Good luck!

sleepdreamy··on What game are you playing?
At least you are able to see your behavior.

I was judged harshly for not going to college immediately out of HS. I went 6-7 years later and graduated debt free. Meanwhile some of my peers will be paying their loans well into their late 50s. Not knowing what you want to do for the rest of your life at 18 shouldn't be shunned when you acknowledge that fact.

I'll never forget going into WaWa after a day at the office(Dressed up) and seeing the girl from my English AP class who would mock me when I presented infront of class. Super uppity and always negatively judging the quality of others work. I was very nice to her when I could've easily been cruel.

I hope she learned a lesson on judging others, but probably not.

sleepdreamy··on Why do girls do better at school?
The article is literally asking 'Why Do Girls Do Better at School' -

What does men being horny have to do with my response or the article?

sleepdreamy··on How to Walk (12 miles a day)
Elaborate on 'I'm not certain the benefits add up'
sleepdreamy··on Why do girls do better at school?
Women want to re-produce. Any intelligent human knows you need to gather resources to care for your child adequately and give them a good life.

IMO - This is one of the more obvious answers to this phenomenon

sleepdreamy··on Is everything falling apart?
Is this sarcasm? It's truly laughable if you don't think boomers had a clear advantage in comparison to Millennials, Gen X, etc;

I'm sorry you didn't reap the benefits of the most benevolent time in America's history but plenty of your Boomer counter-parts sure as hell did. I've met enough Boomers that there is nothing wrong with generalizing Boomers as a whole. Just like a huge percentage of my generation totally gave up and resort to 'UNFAIR MEH WON'T TRY NOW'. Am in that camp? No. I don't get upset when people generalize because it doesn't pertain to me as an individual. There is some truth to prejudice

Boomers had an era of prosperity that we will never see again. My in-laws purchased their first home in 1971 for 60,000. That same home is worth 800,000+

The only reason I can even own a home or compete in my late 20's is because I wasn't naïve enough to think that any degree would pay the bills.

You might not like it, but Boomers took their hoard and pulled the ladder up behind them. It is what it is.

sleepdreamy··on College Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life
Your friends anecdotal experience doesn't trump what is known amongst practically everyone. They all congregate together at elite schools. Sorry your friend experienced that, maybe pick a pertinent degree involving finance next time
sleepdreamy··on 3,200-year-old Egyptian tablet records excuses for why people missed work
We're very much the same animals. If you need a testament, just go drive on any major east coast highway in the morning. People rage, go get ahead maybe 5 feet. Saving what, fractions of a second?

We are animals, the same animals we were 3,200 years ago. Just fancier toys this time around. Serfdom is still largely intact, just a different flavoring this time around.

sleepdreamy··on College Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life
I went to a no-name community college. I have zero debt, I make a livable wage. I work in IT. It can be done, you don't need to go the traditional route anymore unless you can get into a prestigious school.

Prestigious schools are worth the connections/friends you will make. Always take it if you are offered to go to Harvard, Princeton, MIT etc;

If you get into your regular state college etc then just do 2 years community first and save money. You won't make friends with wealthy/connected people in the same way you would at a prestigious university.

sleepdreamy··on The Machine Learning Job Market
There is more to being a great tech employee than just being 'brilliant' at the hard skills. Soft skills are just as important, and play a role behind why I have been promoted more than peers who surpass my skills ten-fold. Some people also don't want to be in management.

We all have different trajectories and choices. This comment makes it seem like if you aren't a technical wizard then you might as well be useless. This is not reality

sleepdreamy··on Sony granted patent for TV that only stop ads once you stand and say brand name (2020)
I would return the TV immediately if they tried this crap. Shameful
sleepdreamy··on That time Sony installed rootkit software on thousands of computers [video]
What a snake. You should make a video calling him out with proof, forcing him to respond. Post it all over Reddit/HackerNews etc;
sleepdreamy··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
Weird. I don't see the harm in actually digging the tunnel. The issue is he is probably not ventilating properly. He is going to get sick and pass out/die if he digs deep enough with no proper machinery to move fresh air into the space.

The alternative is he is cheating on his GF and hired an excavation crew as a cover. Elaborate but..with the crap I've seen you really never know. lol.

sleepdreamy··on Canada bans foreign home buyers for two years
This is a false step. You can still purchase a home through a shell, which literally negates this law entirely. Most of the people who are the issue, are using shells with purchases like this. zzzz
sleepdreamy··on Are We Sleepwalking into Wwiii?
What do you think God's Stance is on Billionaires/Oligarchs?
sleepdreamy··on The only thing we should be talking about is the climate crisis
Yeah, I am skeptical.
