slaman··on Bitcoin drops below $20k, Ether cracks $1k – what this means
It's been right around the corner for over 5 years.

slaman··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Could an alternate means of settlement be used? Runescape gold or hawala?

Potentially the involvement of those banks is a feature and provides value?

Things to ponder...

slaman··on Origin of the Bluetooth Name
Now you've introduced either a caching problem or a data subscription with a myriad of other trade-offs and I don't think either of those are less trouble than bluetooth.

This was true until I was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

I am of the opinion that NFTs on OpenSea are equally uncool and worthless as any other NFT marketplace including ones created on your local machine in secret.
slaman··on Kazakhstan to restrict crypto miners amid power shortages
Lululemon is a regular clothing retailer, with no MLM, membership or even loyalty program at this time.

You can't earn any money by re-selling their clothes, you'd probably get sued if you tried.

You probably mean LuLaRoe, a brand that is capitalizing on the name similarity.

slaman··on Tether minted most USDT to just 2 firms – Alameda and Cumberland
If you print 30 billion and give it to your buddy at an exchange for an IOU/commercial paper.

I guess that counts as a sale, even if the exchange mostly uses it to wash trade the price of cryptocurrencies up.

In tether's terms of service they state that they have no obligation to ever give you any money for 1 tether.
slaman··on Real world ownership is not a use case for blockchain
Insurance scams would be a laugh too.

"All my assets got transferred to a random address! You should probably reimburse me because I was clearly hacked."

slaman··on I heat my home by mining crypto currencies
It's value deprecates over time though, as it's market efficiency drops relative to newer cards.

Your return on the opportunity cost is maximized if you can do work closest to the time the card was acquired.

If you buy a card and leave it in the box for 10 years you have not 'consumed' the card, but you have wasted a few hundred dollars.

From an electricity and financial perspective if you have valuable work to do, your costs are minimized if you do that work closest to the purchase date.

This is obvious if you have a significant workload, but maybe not as obvious if you are running CAD. Is the cost of a new card worth the time saved by the new card? Significantly more efficient if you can keep it busy.

slaman··on Factorio 1.1 is getting close
In 1.0 there is small window you can add to the GUI that displays your rocket launch count at all times.
slaman··on The U.S. Inability to Count Votes Is a National Disgrace. and Dangerous
In Canada, mail in ballots have a separate, earlier deadline.

If you do not mail your ballot on time, there is another simple solution, you go to the (lineless) polls on election day.

When they check everyone in they confirm that they have not already received a mail-in-ballot from that individual before allowing you to the booth.

With enough time allocated for mail-in-ballots, I feel that it doesn't matter that the deadline is earlier. Deadlines are fairly arbitrary either way and at some point you need to select a winner.

If you have plenty of opportunity to vote and you do not vote by the deadline, your vote is not counted regardless of the method you have chosen.

Or you could see it as the often-overlooked perspective of an immigrant with a successful business in a traditional industry who is witnessing and exposing the absurdity of the valley capital bubble.
slaman··on Ford’s electric car engineers go crazy with 1,400hp Mustang Mach-E
Because the energy density problem. A trailer of fuel holds more energy than a trailer of batteries for the same weight.

No matter how much battery you add, it's always possible to get more range with less weight in fuel, and with less diminishing returns.

Your milage might vary, but I think the former is still very much a work in progress.

slaman··on I Know What You Download
Likewise.

They were also acquired at a price which would value each employee at ~350M.

They were capable of scaling in a way that is certainly an anomaly, and not indicative of the costs of an ordinary team.

It speaks volumes about what the right talent and architecture/technology choices can do if leveraged successfully, but is more of an interesting anecdote than a realistic infrastructure budget.

slaman··on Python Is Eating the World
Docker saves some pain, but introduces others.

You have a container that will run anywhere, but it has a bigger attack surface and needs updates.

I also would disagree that it's easier than using virtual environments for development, and only for packaging in some narrow use cases.

Not sure why I'm engaging this...

I think it was allowed because that knowledge of the shortcut is ubiquitous enough that it is understood by most everyone.

I imagine the offices at the times use Macs.

I'd also argue that "the bulk of the machines in the world" run unix-like operating systems by no small margin.

It's true though that for most of the past few decades 'Ctrl+F' would make more sense, and it still remains an interesting editorial decision.
