slackfan··on Climate is accumulating 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs worth of heat per second
No I don't get it, can you please provide the measurement in either beaver pelts or football fields.
slackfan··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
I asked for a crab chair, and I'm not even disabled.
slackfan··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
Famous last words.
slackfan··on Two Reminders about AI
Seems a stretch to go from that to hacking rubygems don't you think?

I don't believe anthropic or openai are doing anything similar to get their "hack a website" results. The fact that they are prompting dangerous prompts in non-airgapped environments is evidence of at minimum negligence, if not malicious intent on the behalf of those companies.

slackfan··on Two Reminders about AI
Show me any system without an initial prompt or goal set.
slackfan··on Kenyans Did College Students' Homework for Years. Then A.I. Arrived
Guess I was a sucker because I didn't cheat.

Much was learned today.

slackfan··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
They're usually sold as Sharp in the states, but the model numbers are the same, etc. As an old fogey of a nerd it's neat to have a NEC-branded remote/screen when I sit down to watch a movie.
slackfan··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Except in the article that is literally parent of this discussion thread? Did you even RTFA?

MultiSync P495, with the additional daughter card for the RPI CM4.

As far as regular TV duties, the CM4 running libreELEC does everything I need and then some. The HDMI-CEC was flaky at one point, but from my research on it regular consumer TVs suffer from the same problem. If anything I'm more limited by the CM4's output, less the display itself.

Tradeoffs: I wanted to control my stack with minimal cabling pretty much everything else be damned, and this was a nice integrated solution and a excellent alternative to just buying a 43" dell monitor to hang on my wall. There are probably some image processing "features" that videophiles can comment on, but I've been used to literal decades of LCDs at this point, so an IPS display is going to be just fine(tm). Display lag is a bit higher than I would like for retro video games on it, but that's more an overall LCD problem, less a specific display issue.

In functionality it's much closer to a computer monitor than it is to a TV. The menus are obtuse, brutalist even, but if you ever had to work in IT and set up a conference room display you will feel right at home.

It's also a heavy pig compared to consumer televisions, right on the edge of what my mount is able to hold, and not really great to wrangle in a position by your lonesome, but not impossible either.

As for video: It's more than fine. Maybe the pixels are bigger than my macbook's screen, but at 6+ft viewing distance with my eyesight, I can't tell.

But I was reliably informed this never happens! (Reasons I own an NEC commercial display instead)
slackfan··on Early 2000s were peak of humanity
And people were yapping away on their phones while driving and crashing into trees.

I remember it too. It wasn't that rosy.

slackfan··on AI-written code is still your code
You are responsible for your (robot's) output.
slackfan··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Surprised to see this much ICE support on HN.
slackfan··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
>1. Make it illegal to hire undocumented immigrants.

It is, in fact, illegal to hire undocumented immigrants. Federal offense actually. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1324a

>2. Foreign specialists need to earn at least an x% above industry standard (to prove they are specialists).

The current standard is that they should earn the pervailing wage, so at minimum average. I agree that they should earn at least 200+% more, however.

I don't think your cruelty argument holds.

slackfan··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Good. Need a bit of time to reset.
slackfan··on Fake US thinktank set up and funded by Israel sought to game AI for propaganda
What's the difference between a fake thinktank and a real thinktank?
slackfan··on France's tax agency got hacked (in French)
They couldn't even wipe out everybody's tax bill.

Weak.

slackfan··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
What if I'm reading it for work? What am I but a tool for the corporatioN?
slackfan··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
We're moving over to self-hosted forgejo. Interface is roughly similar, featureset is roughly similar enough.
slackfan··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
noted, comrade. Don't worry, your wealth will serve the working class future very well.
slackfan··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Modern communists are such reactionaries that they can't even see the value in decimating the petite-bourgeoisie population. Sad.
slackfan··on Microsoft filings suggest "around 70%" of its AI revenue is on OpenAI
Hosting.
slackfan··on It's not a fear of "AI communism"; it's a fear of competitive market capitalism
Haven't really seen competitive market capitalists worried about AI communism. Plenty of left-leaning and communists and communists adjacent worried about ai, however.
slackfan··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
This will lead to some new and exciting ways of starting a housefire.
slackfan··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
LLMs are an amplifier. Most software engineers/architects/developers are bad and always have been. We have amplified the bad, and so we have the modern world.
slackfan··on US House of Representatives takes step to make daylight saving time permanent
This is fine, provided we add the extra necessary time zone.
slackfan··on Measuring Input Latency on Linux: X11 vs. Wayland, VRR, and DXVK
I can tell, doesn't mean I can react usually.

Adapting is doable, but after years of rhythm games, yeah, no.

slackfan··on Measuring Input Latency on Linux: X11 vs. Wayland, VRR, and DXVK
I can tell down to about a 3ms difference in lag. Actually even down to 1ms, it's not all its cracked up to be, lemme tell you.
slackfan··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
I have not, but you can verify for yourself - https://github.com/nika-skybytska/fa/tree/master/books has a copy of Komogorov/Fomin's text that's well known vs Introductory Real Analysis in his translation available on the Internet Archive. A cursory glance at the respective TOCs shows that there is reordering.

First couple of chapters match up, then it diverges heavily.

slackfan··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
Garnett (and editions of) are (quelle suprise) just fine.
