sl1ck731··on Sacha Baron Cohen Uses ADL Speech to Tear Apart Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook
This is inflammatory. The truth is some people just don't care about these implications. You can find people in this very thread arguing that it isn't Facebooks responsibility to filter these (whether or not you agree is not the issue, it is a valid position). Calling engineers who do not fit your narrow view "amoral" is disingenuous.
sl1ck731··on Tesla Cybertruck
I'd love a nimble truck personally. I drive a sporty car but need a utility vehicle so often that buying something I like to drive becomes a regret.
sl1ck731··on When will Google shut down Stadia?
My theory is this was a ploy to make use of idle cloud resources Google invested in for GCP. If that is the case I have much less fear of it just being shut down since its just gravy on top.
sl1ck731··on Talent May Be Shifting Away from Superstar Cities: Study
Anecdotally I would imagine the opposite. I am not going to innovate for you after even a 20 or 30 minute commute and all the in-office interruptions and ceremony. After 5 I'm out the door and the lights upstairs are off. I'm not responding to emails or picking up my phone.

However remotely I am basically never off. A common thing that comes up with remote work is you have a hard time just turning off, but I don't mind as I'm not mentally exhausted by interruptions and can actually enjoy the work I'm doing.

But I'm sure its a person to person thing, type of environment, industry, etc.

sl1ck731··on Microsoft Advertisement Inc.
No. That is the window.
sl1ck731··on The Google Squeeze
Spent the last couple days trying to gather information for an LDAP/AD/Samba project for a multi-tenant MSP setup. Literally the top 3 or 4 results of every query were from Jumpcloud and just pure, low-effort blog posts that you can just tell were SEO driven to get them on the top of every keyword to sell you a product that isn't even really the same thing.

I just discovered the "reddit"/"hackernews" trick while doing this for actual content I want to read.

As far as I'm concerned I will never recommend Jumpcloud or any other service I find doing this.

sl1ck731··on Elephants Rarely Get Cancer, Now We Know Why (2015)
I believe I've read this verbiage around cancer in pets, such as domestic cats living far longer than "intended".
sl1ck731··on When AWS, Azure, or GCP Becomes the Competition
Ah, I had glanced at their landing page before posting above and just saw the product. I didn't realize they were outspoken about things. This makes more sense to me now.
sl1ck731··on When AWS, Azure, or GCP Becomes the Competition
Curious, why do you say that about honeycomb specifically? Not that I've heard of them just seems pretty random.
sl1ck731··on Around 30 percent of children in the U.S. don't get enough sleep: study
There have been quite a few studies popping up recently regarding this and there does appear to be genetic mutations that account for being a "night owl".

https://blog.23andme.com/23andme-research/the-genetics-of-be...

DSPD is also seen far more frequently in adolescents.

sl1ck731··on Over 60% of employees are happy at startups–far outpacing FAANG and MSFT
It seems the startup half of the survey was ran on Angel while the FAANG/MSFT was using a larger or more diverse data set from Blind. Unless I'm missing something this seems like a huge selection bias, since people actively focusing on startups (indicating this subgroup makes them happier) are more likely to be interested/happy with the work they find.
sl1ck731··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
The company entity is headquartered in San Francisco, even if its only a PO box that is its "address".
sl1ck731··on Hygieia is a devops dashboard aggregator
I can see this source, it even appears to be Apache 2 licensed. What is the cutoff for "real" open source?
sl1ck731··on CloudFlare is ruining the internet for me (2016)
Do you routinely use a VPN or a shared connection like University housing?
sl1ck731··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
I doubt the large majority of users of Facebook services can even pick out advertisements from content, let alone care about E2E encryption.

I don't think they will be hurt by the fraction that do leave for this reason.

sl1ck731··on What do executives do, anyway?
I can't think of many reasons my company couldn't keep trotting along if the CEO left and we went months without. The only thing I can think of is someone needs to appoint the people directly below him were they to leave.

You're assuming companies need to keep growing and need some flashy face of a CEO as a marketing gimmick. A steady business is fine.

sl1ck731··on Tests show bootleg marijuana vapes tainted with hydrogen cyanide
Close, dipping tobacco.
sl1ck731··on Tests show bootleg marijuana vapes tainted with hydrogen cyanide
Not only that, the massive hysteria and misinformation is a problem for everyone outside those states that are shotgunning measures.

I took a hiatus on my nicotine vape when the news started exploding and went back to another form of tobacco as I just didn't know what was going on. Its the devil you know vs the one you don't.

sl1ck731··on If You Run a Small Business, Park in the Back of the Parking Lot
I worked in an auto shop and we would frequently park our own cars in the bays when we were empty for this reason and/or to appear more popular.
sl1ck731··on Update from Chef
Which, in my experience, makes continued use of it completely impossible. There is no other product I've had to sit through vendor calls as much with while trying to do some kind of maintenance on the Chef server.
sl1ck731··on Serverless: slower and more expensive
Amazon puts emphasis on "certifying" solutions architects to turn them into marketing mouthpieces and AWS proponents.

Source: Seen it happen, am certified.

sl1ck731··on Optics and Regex: Greater than the sum of their parts
There are 62 exclamations and 54 periods (counted after removing the periods in code sections).
sl1ck731··on American Phrase Book
I've never heard of Americans thinking/saying they were direct. In my case I see our culture as the opposite, as this page seems to demonstrate. Corporate double-speak is a well-known thing here (I presume its similar in many places, but I don't know), and I'm sure most people like me were taught "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all". A common trope in child programs when I grew up was that being honest but hurtful was "incorrect".

Perhaps subtle cues or assumptions create such imagery of directness for those on the outside? Not that I take issue with your characterization, I just wonder how it came to be.

sl1ck731··on Troubles with the AWS web console
"The universal thinking within AWS is that people will ultimately use the API/CLI/SDK."

What is odd is that during the Chicago summit one of the presenters explicitly said that most of their customers use the UI instead of API/automation. I don't recall the percentage but it was higher than I imagined.

sl1ck731··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
My quit signal seems to be getting the flu or similar. I've heard from others as well. After a few days of being miserable and not wanting to smoke because of the flu you come out the other end not needing it.

I quit chewing tobacco this way. Picked up vaping a while later for no apparent reason. Will probably quit this the same way.

sl1ck731··on Show HN: Quark-IDE and a JavaScript runtime to build cross-platform desktop apps
I don't know if its just me, but the site runs extremely slow on a pretty well-specced desktop PC. I think there might be too much going on. I gave up trying to scroll through.

This is on Chrome 72.

sl1ck731··on “The books will stop working.”
Honestly, and I dislike admitting it, but paper books instill the same feeling as any other "collection" hobby for me. I take more pride in reading them knowing that my bookshelf is growing.
sl1ck731··on Buy a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
I've also seen it used as dumb clients for POS-like things.

Imagine the screens technicians at the lube center you get your oil changed at use to lookup your information.

sl1ck731··on US Senate report on Equifax breach [pdf]
Exactly. If they can't properly remedy the situation regarding data they choose to keep then they never should have been allowed to be in business at all.
sl1ck731··on US Senate report on Equifax breach [pdf]
New SSN and a personal Equifax "slave" to update it anywhere and everywhere its used in my life would be a good start.

They can offer a couple years of their BS identity protection, but your identity is ruined forever. Your SSN doesn't rotate or expire. There should be no time limit on any remedy they provide.
