And it's pretty clear that Amazon has led to much lower prices and a consumer surplus compared to alternatives in the market.
And for all the shit AMZN gets on HN and over social media, broadly it is still one of the most widely respected and popular companies in the US across a broad spectrum of consumers.
You can argue whether that's overall good or bad, but I'm talking about the law as it is and has been enforced vs. what people WISH the law said.
He made a terribly misogynistic "joke" and paid the consequences for it.
You'd think someone with a Nobel prize wouldn't be so clueless
Twitter is really great for almost any niche interest.
It is an absolute toxic wasteland dumpster-fire for anything related to politics (yes, even your politics) so sensible people would best avoid those political posts/discussions at all costs.
I want to follow @john-smith for his nuanced, thoughtful views on solid state batteries and EVs, and I'm extremely annoyed when he's retweeting moronic, tribalist politics into my feed.
Twitter is not real life. It's a deranged, toxic simulacrum of an alternative universe built by a god who hates us.
You get ALL of their offerings.
The idea that you should pay less than $8 for Disney Plus because you only want to watch Mandalorian when you actually get access to literally dozens of extremely high quality titles is just fucking dumb.
The previous option was pay $14 per person to go to a theater and that's the only thing you get to watch. Or pay $120 a month for cable.
It's all just ludicrously deranged mental gymnastics to justify the fact you don't want to pay for anything.
Which you can do, that's fine, just be honest about it!
But still people insist that they must pirate because the "studios" for some amorphous reason related to preexisting hatred of corporations or whatever.
Some people would just prefer to not pay for shit I guess. I just wish they'd be more honest about it than the mental gymnastics used to defend piracy.
Everyone loves the idea of cheaper housing for people in theory.
Once they realize it means their own property value won't appreciate as quickly, or may even decrease and then suddenly they are against it. And they will vote out any officials that support it.
There needs to be state or federal intervention. And that doesn't seem likely at any time in the near future.
Tesla is priced as if it's going to absolutely dominate the automotive market. And there's no reason to believe that's true.
Automotive is currently a super fragmented market with many players, why will that change in a couple decades when it has been true for the past century or so?
There will be at least 3-4 major players in NA just as there are now, maybe more.
Apple has dominated high-end smartphones for over a decade. Amazon has dominated eCommerce for that time and longer.
Tesla dominates EV, which is a tiny portion of all auto sales. There is about to be huge competition in the EV space from legacy auto manufacturers and a car is not the same as a phone.
There are plenty of cars with a WAY better driving experience than a Toyota Camry but it's still the best selling sedan on the road. So really hard to believe Tesla can win by offering "premium" driving experience.
But it's still not there yet and likely requires some giant gov't subsidies or some tech breakthrough. No amount of $ makes batteries work for long haul at current tech or anything we see in the near future.
passenger vehicles are a TOTALLY different ballgame than commercial long haul trucking. Even the early Tesla models could beat top of the line sports cars in some performance measures. The thing is the people who buy class 7 & 8 trucks work off an excel spreadsheet. They don't give a shit if the truck can accelerate way faster than a Cummins diesel or that the driver has a way better HUD or user experience than in a Freightliner cab. They certainly don't care very much that the truck is more environmentally friendly. Maybe they'll pay 10% more all else equal but that's not what Tesla or anyone else is able to provide.
They only care about $/mile and unless there is some massive technical breakthrough, batteries ain't beating diesel any time in the near future on that measure.
Notice the Tesla Semi has been delayed for three years now?
All the substantial investments I've seen in commercial long-haul trucking are in hydrogen. You have Tesla, Nikola and others claiming they have a long-haul battery solution but they are full of shit. Tesla has already delayed their Semi for 3 years now. Nikola is a joke but even they were pushing hydrogen along with their BEV stuff. And the legacy CV companies are, again, only investing in BEV for short-haul stuff.
Short haul, drayage, etc. is definitely workable with current tech.
They batteries you'd need for 6-700 mile daily drives would mean you're carrying a tiny fraction of what a ICE truck could haul due to weight constraints. We are making strides in this technology but are still nowhere close.
Almost everyone I've spoken to believes hydrogen is far more feasible, but it still has its own issues most importantly the massive infrastructure investment to support it.
He raped two 15 year old girls. And likely many more that haven't came out publicly.
Using your fame to exploit young, impressionable women is pretty awful and was awful 50 years ago. Even if "everyone did it!"
Great job HN!
As you say, he ages well, except for his molesting young girls in the '70s. There's at least two 15 year olds that admit having sex with him.
I'm a Bowie fan but it's difficult to separate those unacceptable acts from the great things he did.
I'm in my 30s and would say I have an above-average knowledge of rock history and still learned a decent amount.
Yes Payola is nothing new or unheard of, but how that played into segregation in music is something that's rarely discussed in tandem at least in popular contexts.
My point was that these criticisms never acknowledge that ATVI is massively successful and the critics are always in the minority.
They assume because a few hundred on a message board said something the entire company is a failure and everyone agrees.
For the record I agree with most of the criticism...I also acknowledge what I want isn't necessarily what others want.
Can't build housing in cities with MASSIVE housing shortages because we need to "preserve historical character" of the laundromats that's currently there wasting space.
Can't cut down trees or do controlled burns to prevent turning much of California into a hellfire for months because "conservationism"
All of this is of course mainly tied to maintaining property values. And keeping the wrong people out of the community.
Why are people such selfish assholes?
It's like thinking if you have $100 Million and the right production schedule, crew, actors, and producers in place and they work really hard you'll have a major hollywood blockbuster!
Creative arts don't work like that.
Ask people on HN if they like CoD and they'd laugh at you but the games are IMMENSELY popular every release and they print cash for ATVI.
That's already kind of what's happening. Pay is absolute dogshit for journalists, many low level entertainment industry gigs, so it's overwhelmingly staffed by trust fund kids who have their parents subsidize the lifestyle.
Doesn't really work the same way for dudes
There was a BIPARTISAN senate immigration reform bill that passed the senate in 2013. THIRTEEN Republicans voted for it and every Democrat and independent did.
It went to the house and died there because the Republican majority leader Boehner knew it would pass and refused to let it be voted on. He was beholden to the most xenophobic, bigoted Republicans in his caucus and thought they would vote him out of leadership if he let it pass. He ended up losing his job anyways shortly thereafter for other reasons.
Now the entire Republican party is beholden to the xenophobic bigots and I guarantee you the exact same bill wouldn't find more than 2 votes from a Republican in the senate.
So no, there is no "both sides" here. Democrats have been remarkably consistent about what an immigration compromise looks like, and even were able to pass it in the senate 7-8 years ago, only to be blown up by the Tea Party ur-Trumpists. The GOP has only moved further to the right and will never support anything close to that.
I am here saying that, yes that paltry $15 an hour you scold Amazon for paying? Well mom and pop they drove out of business was paying about HALF of that.
