skyberrys··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
How do you see all utilities as public? What if a commercial building has rooftop solar?
skyberrys··on How a Boeing 737 MAX Survived a Nosedive Traveling at the Speed of Sound
Did I understand correctly, the first mate decided to attack the pilot, but other people on the plane rushed the cockpit and were able to fight of the first mate?

Then two other pilots on board the plane took over and flew it back to land. Why did it have two extra pilots on the plane?

skyberrys··on There are only 5,000 elite software engineers in the world
How does this divide out by organization? Is there a few organizations that are responsible for 50% of the output of that market? I'm skeptical of so broadly applying a rule that comes from studying the authors of scientific papers.
skyberrys··on Tell HN: Thanks for All the Fish
May you find yourself in a future situation saying "opps, how embarrassing". So long!

Sidenote: would it help you out if we all go and down vote your comments/posts so you get more headroom to max karma? I know probably not what you intended but it would let you stay around longer.

skyberrys··on Dear Software Makers
What a strange choice from YouTube. They won't even let you create a draft of a video ( private not published anywhere ) and then replace the video before publishing. This seems much more confusing, it's like two videos yet they don't have different urls. Maybe they will control for a level of similarity?
skyberrys··on AI tools generated nearly $1B in extra costs, Blue Cross insurers say
At my recent physical I had to sign a form acknowledging that if I mention specific concerns they are allowed to bill my insurance twice. The example given said the physical is only for general health and if I mention a concern like 'ear pain' they will bill it as a second assessment. So double the money for the same amount of time because the AI voice assistant said so.
skyberrys··on Phyllotaxis: An audio-reactive LED display
The geometry is really beautiful and the 3D print work and Led placement is also really good. Thanks for sharing the project, it's inspiring. I too have a sense of enjoyment from pulsating LEDs. I'm not so interested in the audio component though, I always struggle to link the audio to the lights.
skyberrys··on Why Doesn't Anyone Want to Fix One of America's Scariest Roads?
I really enjoyed reading about this. As a tourist, it's really easy to drive into Colorado and forget to check your route for huge altitude changes. I live in a flat place, I check roads for things like high speeds of traffic and flooding potential but it's easy to forget that sometimes I might end up driving on a cliffs edge.

Then there is also the puzzle of locals driving fast to get through the avalanche risk, while terrified tourists like myself are crawling along worried I'll go around an unknown turn too fast and shoot over the cliffs edge.

In summary I have to say it's been helpful for me to paste directions into AI tools and ask them to tell me how the drive would be during the days I'm planning to make it. Just for good measure I also ask to find local dog friendly stops along the way for food and rest room breaks.

I'm not sure if this is something work spending hundreds of millions of dollars fixing when the risks can be mitigated with some additional planning. They should probably board up that tempting cave mentioned at the bottom of the article though and improve their avalanche guns.

skyberrys··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I was thinking the same thing. Why not just sell the grapes straight to us grape loving people? They do have a short shelf life though, and as a lover of concord grapes I do go bananas during concord grape season but I really can only eat so many before they start to spoil and I do eat large amounts of them. The concord grape dealers know me and flag me down to give me deals.
skyberrys··on Headed for the Exit: The Great Engineering Leader Career Break
There is a small paragraph about a CEO both moving to slow and to fast with AI at the same time. I can't help but laugh when reading that description, I feel like it's something I see and hear about daily, but I've never quite been able to characterize it.

To slow, using AI to make all sorts of prototypes but none actually the ones needed, and too fast outsourcing code reviews to more AI, blasting in with a 60k line PR. Meanwhile the CTO is striving for a balance that will never come.

skyberrys··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
What a funny spot for the algorithms to take you.
skyberrys··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
Appreciate all the common sense replies here reminding me to calm down my vending machine fortunes.
skyberrys··on My Recent Woodworking Projects
That's interesting advice. I only have a miter saw, none of the others. It's gotten me pretty far though.

Well there is also a chainsaw, but that is solving a different problem. No one uses chainsaws for woodworking, only those people carving stumps.

skyberrys··on Have an LLC
There are all sorts of circumstances you will find that having and LLC is a chance to go through the easier/faster door. The whole article starts off with a painful javajoke and the punchline is sometimes you need to go really fast. That's what already having an LLC handy for helps with.

Recent personal discovery about an LLC, useful for gaining PDK access to proprietary fabs, so I can finally try touching lower process nodes again that are not open source, despite being out of university and not having a job that gives me the PDK access.

skyberrys··on Show HN: Panda, the world's first personal AI computer
Interesting, I've thought of setting up something like this. I would agree with the other comments I want to know more about what is inside the box. Also waiting 12 months for them to start shipping sounds like a long lead time. Is it still a personal computer without a screen and an operating system? How many watts is the Panda?
skyberrys··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
By the end of the read I was wondering why I can't setup a few vending machines, sit back and watch the profits roll in. I know it's likely more complicated that I imagine, but it seems like such a hands off way to manage commerce. It wraps up inventory management and sales into one convenient package and takes out the daily responsibilities.
skyberrys··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
They must really love their security cameras to have decided to start decorating them. The bedazzled cameras are lovely to see. My inner 90's child can't wait to apply sparkly plastic rhinestone to their naked exteriors. What's next? Some fake braids and perhaps a troll doll or two?

Also have to commend whoever is in charge of acronyms for this project. I thought I was the most excessive acronym user, but now having read this article, I'm not!

skyberrys··on Rising sea destroys homes, erases beaches in California
This is a pretty cool map. I'm at 20' above sea level. That should be good enough right?
skyberrys··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Do humans even get much choice in this though on an individual basis? Even the wealthy among us have plagues of paparazzi following them around invading their privacy. The poor have even less choice it's like either eat (grocery shop) and hand over your data or starve with your rights.
skyberrys··on Yes, Claude can do nine loops
Cool, that was an interesting read on its own. I viewed the html version and skimmed it, I appreciated your illustrations.
skyberrys··on Yes, Claude can do nine loops
What is it about telling Claude "I'm only a biological human and now I have to go to sleep" that will get it to keep cranking away for hours. I have good success with similar statements and usually come back off several hours to find that Claude has managed to babysit several computational runs.

It's interesting to note that the expensive part of this experiment was the Claude operations expense. For me I find that Claude is a small fraction of my cost with most of the bill attributed to computers to run simulations instead of the AI to monitor and tweak the simulations.

skyberrys··on AI startups with hyper ARR growth – what's happening inside these companies?
Do you think token cost will eventually tie into electricity prices? I know the GPUs cost money to buy but over the lifetime use cycle, isn't the bigger cost powering the GPU for all the tokens?

Eventually the value of the tokens will need to be higher than the cost to produce them.

skyberrys··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
Your mission is not to build software, it's to share your collection of cool typewriters with the world. And your AI built website helps you do that! It shares your YT channel, and now I know a bit more about typewriters. Thank you for building your site with AI and for building your collection with passion. Do you have a typewriter room somewhere?
skyberrys··on Ask HN: I just talked to an AI-obsessed client, and I need a shower afterwards
What is the response here to finding out the plans of reply with agents and post as agents? If we do nothing the flood of AI posts will overwhelm the internet. But doing something seems impossible too.
skyberrys··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
I wonder if this could solve a driving problem I have. I want an automated system to slowly drive the cars from the entrance of my neighborhood to their designated parking spaces. Right now the humans do this and they go too fast, and ignore the stop signs. I think it would be safer if all cars are automatically parked instead. It seems doable, it's a very controlled environment and I want to cars to go slow. The humans can get out and walk home if they need to be there faster.
skyberrys··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Your solution is so efficient and workable that I highly doubt we will ever be able to implement it. Any future has to be something we can arrive at from where we are today, and since your future involves a few large corporations dropping their hands on fistfuls of cash, it's going to be really hard to get to it.
skyberrys··on I don't want the details
So in summary, instead of details propose how to change the system so that instead of hearing perfectly reasonable details about why the current system failed, go straight for changing the systems to prevent the chance of failure again.

I like this plan of action, it removes focus from what happened in the past to how can we prevent it from happening in the future.

skyberrys··on Launch HN: Coverage Cat (YC S22) – Umbrella insurance via your personal agent
I want to check it out for homeowners insurance in CA, but I can't be sure you guys will never ever send my info onto someone else to send me annoying emails or phone calls? Besides my home is not the best deal to insure I think, I'm barely above sea level, it makes me worried to switch insurance. What if the new deal drops me in a year?
skyberrys··on The UV index is not the warm sensation of sunlight on bare skin
Toasting my DNA is quite a way to put it. It's an informative read, it helps me understand why the noonday sun does feel so intense. Even if it's not hot, the ability to find shade at noon is so poor, it feels inescapable.
skyberrys··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
There is one person who is so good at writing with AI assistance.

Everyone else, including me, not so much. I envy his talent and ability to so successfully use the new tools. It's just something to think and talk about regularly. Maybe one day we will all be able to use the tools as well as that guy.
