Hi, I'm Skyler. I work in IT for a major aerospace company. Before that, I worked in IT for a major software company. Sometimes I work for myself.

skuthus··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2020)
The lack of people of color in the about page is all I needed to see.
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
this sounds amazing - I want that
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
Apple doesn't just own the only app store on their platform: They also prevent apps that don't meet their personal moral standards on the store, arbitrarily. As a result, Instagram, tumblr, and many other sites are forced to censor and curtail content on their platforms because of apples perpetual moral consternation.

Apple should be able to do this - but they shouldn't be able to do it without those companies being able to represent themselves independently, through another app store.

skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
It's a bit pedantic, but okay. I philosophically believe that we deserve to choose - you are right that the reality is different. I would like to make it the same.

If you purchase the hardware for the product, no company should be able to stop you from installing whatever you like on the product.
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
Then it shouldnt be a problem to allow alternative stores
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
I can and I do - but that doesnt mean I dont think that the option should exist on iOS
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
Because you cannot opt for a different store if you don't like the fee. If you want to sell independently, you cant. If you want to sell alternatively, you cant. This excludes many devs and shops from access.
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
He means the only store on the iOS platform, not the only app store between all platforms
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
it would be on a different app store - you would still have full confidence if you used the Apple App Store only
skuthus··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
You can still have what you want and give people other options. It's called choice. We deserve to be able to choose
skuthus··on The Secret Origin of the Action RPG
Anyone interested in an Action/rougelike from yesteryear should check out Cave Noire for the original Gameboy. Surprisingly comprehensive rougelike for the time.

Ah yeah you're right

Didn't Macklemore's 'Thrift Shop' come out in 2016? Maybe this explains the price increase in 2016

skuthus··on Microsoft to permanently close its retail stores
I guess I can say this now.

I worked for 5 years at the most revenue-generating microsoft store in the world. We were near the official Microsoft campus. The short answer is that things started to change internally around 2017, where stores changed their hiring requirements and excised a lot of their top talent in favor of lower-paid, less enthusiastic management and employees. This has been a steady downhill process since - It is a shame that the stores will no longer be. I loved my time working there, and loved the people and connections I made there both personally and professionally. We genuinely went out of our way to make customers happy, no matter the cost. It was inevitable that kind of goodwill would be snuffed out by profit motive eventually.

it isnt typically the only goal, no. Many people own stocks and stakes in companies because they believe in what the company is doing, producing, or working towards.

skuthus··on Coinbase will be a remote-first company
Is it really that surprising that people want socialization after going this long without it? Waiting in line at the DMV would be the social event of the year given our current climate.

You might get more honest results after people are back in the office for a bit.

skuthus··on Shopify Goes Digital by Default
I wonder how much this situation would have benefited WeWork, and how much the future of WFH will create opportunities for its successor
skuthus··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I am slowly re-shelling and modding all of my original portable consoles. In addition, I am building new ones out of parts and bulk broken shipments from ebay - and selling them for much lower than the market currently lists them.
skuthus··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
I haven't seen it mentioned yet: Metamagical Themas by Douglas Hofstadter - this book was a game changer for me - I read it in college over a partiularly rainy spring break and its content has changed the way I think about just about everything.

Systems Thinking: A Primer by Donella Meadows is also an incredibly thought-provoking non-fiction book, that really makes you think about the world and the systems we create differently.

skuthus··on The Baloney Detection Kit: Carl Sagan’s Rules for Critical Thinking
The authority of an entire field of experts vs. the single representative of said experts is a good distinction. Good evidence can be reviewed and confirmed easily. Bad actors will try to obfuscate their information
skuthus··on The Baloney Detection Kit: Carl Sagan’s Rules for Critical Thinking
That's significant, of course. However one statistical expert isnt going to outweigh a whole body of scientific findings
skuthus··on The Baloney Detection Kit: Carl Sagan’s Rules for Critical Thinking
Also to follow up - I do feel they selectively ignored some of Sagan's larger point about authority.

An 'Authority' figure is not in and of itself a trustworthy source. The head of the EPA is not necessarily the top Environmental scientist in the country. He is warning that we must be wary of accepting that because someone is in charge, they know what they are saying - not that we have the ability to pick and choose our preferred outcomes over scientific consensus

skuthus··on The Baloney Detection Kit: Carl Sagan’s Rules for Critical Thinking
If an expert in say, economics is telling me the the climate crisis is exaggerated, and an expert in climate science is saying that it isnt - I will tend to believe the expert in the most relevant field.
skuthus··on The Baloney Detection Kit: Carl Sagan’s Rules for Critical Thinking
Thanks for sharing. Sagan's work has also had a profound impact on my life. I miss him and his wisdom terribly.
