skrowl··on Docker-OSX: Run macOS VM in a Docker
Apple's insane hardware pricing
skrowl··on PHP in 2023
PHP devs hate to admit that the only reason PHP is still relevant at all today is because of WordPress.

If WordPress moved to a modern language tomorrow, PHP would cease to exist afterwards.

skrowl··on Recent improvements to Safari
You should check out containers for Firefox. It does the same thing without having to open multiple windows / instances.
skrowl··on Recent improvements to Safari
Safari is the new IE6. It's always going to be the weakest / furthest behind major browser.
skrowl··on Alpine Linux in the Browser (2020)
This tech appears to have not changed since 2019 - https://bellard.org/tinyemu/

Why is it noteworthy / in the new page here?

skrowl··on WordPress is 20 years old
... and is pretty much single-handedly keeping PHP alive!
skrowl··on VanadiumOS: Portable, multi-user Unix-like OS
How does it compare to Alpine Linux in size?
skrowl··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I channeled the money I was spending on YouTubeTV into a seedbox that has 0 personal information about me, paid for with Monero (XMR). Much better bang for the buck and completely removes all the potential adverse legal effects that you could have by torrenting on your home / work connection.

I was happily paying a netflix and spotify sub for over a decade, but once we started getting greedy with Paramount+, AppleTV+, Discovery+, Peacock, etc. I decided it was high time to sail the seven seas again, which I hadn't done since college.

I keep waiting for all the netflix-likes to fail and people go back to just selling their content to netflix, but I don't think it's going to happen. I might be yaaar matey for the rest of my life.

skrowl··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
Elon warns about to danger of training AI to lie https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1606642155346612229

It's very dangerous to make AIs like this hard-left through training. Once you train them that it's OK to lie, you've crossed a boundary.

skrowl··on Second Life on GitHub
The amount of GitHub contributions may have something to do with how popular Second Life is for furries, and how many IT professionals are furries.
skrowl··on Jami: Share, Message, Call freely and privately
How does Jami work if I have multiple devices? For example, I want to connect on my work PC, my home PC, and my phone, share the same account, and see all the messages I sent/received on my work PC when I log into my home PC.

This is traditionally the worst UX problem with Signal / Session / Matrix etc. Manually handing keys back and forth is a disaster. Compare that to something like Telegram or WhatsApp where you can just log on and everything is there.

skrowl··on Apple considering dropping requirement for iPhone web browsers to use WebKit
Great news! Now what about

- No alternative launchers / home apps

- Real filesystem access / real file browser apps

- No emulators

- No compilers / code interpreters etc

- No adult apps

- Multiple accounts / users on a device

- Plug it in to any computer and use it as a USB drive

- Act as a USB host

skrowl··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
Good news! FTL travel when?
skrowl··on FTC sues to block Microsoft’s acquisition of game giant Activision
Dupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33912060 and blogspam (most people I know don't consider WP a credible news source anymore)

skrowl··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
He's very excited to get something android has had for a decade now
skrowl··on MagSpoof: Wireless Magstrip Spoofer
Is this basically the same thing that Samsung smartphones used to do that allowed you to pay at swipe-only terminals?
skrowl··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
They LITERALLY lost a court verdict that said they did it to screw customers.

I don't care what Apple's PR said, the court found that the AG complaint of "Many consumers decided that the only way to get improved performance was to purchase a newer-model iPhone from Apple, ... Apple, of course, fully understood such effects on sales." was correct and that Apple had to pay up.

skrowl··on DoorDash to Slash 1,250 Jobs to Pare Back Rising Costs
It's just the latest in these types of stories where I'm absolutely floored by how many employees a company has.

Why on earth does DoorDash have 20,800 employees (if 1250 represents 6%)?

What are TWENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE doing all day for them?

skrowl··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
It's 100% true, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Not only did it go to court, Apple admitted doing it and paid over $100M in damages.

https://www.npr.org/2020/11/18/936268845/apple-agrees-to-pay...

skrowl··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
Do you personally know anyone who has been using the same iPhone for 8 years? I find that claim dubious.
skrowl··on RimWorld: A sci fi colony SIM driven by an intelligent AI storyteller
I like to spend 5 hours downloading and updating mods, then play for 2 hours
skrowl··on Adobe now requires you to purchase a subscription to rotate PDF pages
FoxIt PDF (and others) edit PDF perfectly.

Even Word, LibreOffice, InkScape, etc do to a certain extent.

skrowl··on iCloud for Windows downloading other people's photos
For people asking which court cases, there have been several. It's widely reported - https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2021/02/15/when-...
skrowl··on Improving Firefox stability on Windows by retrying failed memory allocation
I'm in the same boat. Who are these people who are running out of memory? What on earth are you doing and how old is your machine?
skrowl··on iCloud for Windows downloading other people's photos
This is true. It's been proven to have happened in multiple court cases.

They can basically insert another "end" for the end to end encryption without any of the parties knowing.

You basically should never trust Apple / Google / Microsoft / Amazon / etc to handle your private information... ever. Use audited open-source messaging apps.

skrowl··on CVE-2022-41924 – tailscaled can be used to remotely execute code on Windows
https://github.com/jwhited/wgsd does NAT traversal with Wireguard, but you need to operate a CoreDNS server to do it.

skrowl··on Bob Iger back as Disney CEO
Good. He was terrible for Disney and deserves to be forgotten.
skrowl··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
In PowerShell:

Get-Content -Path Filepath -Tail <int>

skrowl··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
Windows desktop with full linux servers via SSH is the sweet spot for me.

I don't EVER find that I need some kind of *nix command on my local machine when developing, but that's also because I'm not afraid of PowerShell / stuck on bash.

skrowl··on EVs are the least reliable vehicle type: Consumer Reports
The wait list for a Porsche Taycan is 18 months to 2 years. They just can't make enough of them.
