skripp··on “Code” 2nd Edition
What makes this book great is that it more or less only assumes you know how an on-off switch works. Then he goes on to teach you how a (although rather primitive) CPU works and how you would program it.

The teaching style in this book is so unbelievably good that even if you know all the ins and outs of a computer you want to read on because he explains everything in a way that you wish that you would have come up with yourself.

skripp··on Ask HN: What is one book you would recommend everyone to read?
Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software.

Wonderfully written book on how computers work.

It's even a good read for the curious non-technical reader. However, some chapters might be a bit hard for them. The first road block seem to be the chapter on logic gates, but with some help it's not that bad.

skripp··on Minecraft as a Kubernetes admin tool
"It's UNIX system. I know this."
skripp··on Ask HN: I'm looking for a good book on the fundamentals of CS
”Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software” by Charles Petzold.

It will take you on a journey from a lightbulb to assembly language. It’s extremely well written and I wish there were more books like it.

skripp··on What do you do with a billion grams of surplus weed?
1 gigagram, for us Europeans. ;)

Edit: it would most likely be written as one thousand tonnes.

skripp··on The recycling myth: A plastic waste solution littered with failure
>The aluminum cans are stolen because they actually have a intrinsic value. The plastic bag does not and there is no way to artificially add value to it so people collect and return them.

Sure there is. When you buy a bag have it cost $1. If you return the bag you get that back, or maybe $.90 to cover the cost. Not sure about the US, but this is done with glass and plastic bottles in a lot of countries.

skripp··on Ask HN: How to get started with audio programming?
Here are four videos on the subject from my absolute favorite Yotuber, One Lone Coder (whom, sadly, is more or less on a hiatus now after having a kid. Damn those pesky kids!!!!)

skripp··on Reasons some languages are harder to learn
>“hey why don’t we go for a run, somewhere next Monday maybe around noon, just the two of us. I think there’s a nice track close to my place.”

欸!下个星期我们一起去跑步吧。比如星期一中午,就我们俩。我家附近好像有个挺好的跑道。

That's almost a direct translation that would work just fine in Chinese.

> I though of the activity first then the time then the person. Generally that’s how I come up with how to plan activities.

Then you will be really happy to learn about the topic-comment structure in Chinese. It's exactly what you want!

EDIT:

If you really want to say "go running together" before "next week" then that's also fine:

欸!我们一起去跑步吧。比如星期一中午,就我们俩。我家附近好像有个挺好的跑道。

skripp··on Reasons some languages are harder to learn
> Ability to say that certain objects is far from both speaker and listener for example.

Non-native here. I don't quite follow. How about: "The object is far away from both of us.".

The concept is there, but maybe not as a single word. Sure, it might be convenient to be able to say "The object it broscht!", but it would just be syntactic sugar. Not a new concept.

Same for french coworker. Not a new concept.

"French person", "Frenchie", "Cheese eating surrender monkey"

Latter two might be SLIGHTLY inappropriate in a working environment.

skripp··on Ask HN: Good concise guide to Linux's networking stack?

skripp··on macOS unable to open any non-Apple application
Very small audiance, but people with bad vision do enjoy the good displays on their machines and the GREAT built in zoom in OSX. Zoom in Windows is a joke.

Unfortunatly Linux isn't really an option just yet for a lot of us.

skripp··on How Did the Casio F91W Become a Terrorist Icon?
There are kits on Aliexpress/Taobao (I'm guessing Amazon as well) where you can convert any 5600/5610 to a metal bracelet. It has the casio and g-shock branding, so you have to be OK with a bit of light piracy. =) I did it last year and the version I got was really high quality. The buttons are a bit small on 5600/5610 though, so they are a bit harder to press.

skripp··on Oslo had 0 pedestrian, 0 cyclist, 0 children and 1 driver trafic deaths in 2019
This is anecdotal evidence, but I moved from a european town of 200 000 to a mega-city of 20 000 000 and I've seen far fewer incidents here during the last 5 years than the first 30 in my old hometown combined.
skripp··on Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat's plant-based burgers aren't healthier
I agree with the first sentence, but the second one makes no sense to me.

Loads of energy in pasta/noodels, rice, potato, plant based oils etc etc. Getting all amino acids and various nutrients in sufficient amount sure, that is a problem. Energy is not.

skripp··on The Nokia N9 Alarm Clock (2014)
She's telling you the time and weather. Depending on the circumstances she will add some tips like "Put on sunscreen", "bring an umbrella" or "put on a mask to protect against pollution". First time I heard the latter one I was like "I'm living in one of these dystopian sci-fi films I love so much...".

edit: To get rid of it, just change the alarm sound. It's nothing special, just one of the options.
