skripp··on Show HN: Glasses to detect smart-glasses that have cameras
”I would feel pretty silly if my solution uses its own camera. So I'll be avoiding that.”

From the GitHub link.

skripp··on VibeVoice: A Frontier Open-Source Text-to-Speech Model
The male Chinese speakers had THICK American accents. Nothing really wrong with the language, but think the stereotype German speaking English. That was kind of strange to me.
skripp··on DeepSeek Open Infra: Open-Sourcing 5 AI Repos in 5 Days
Maybe. We’ll see if he open sources grok 2 or if he just want others to open source their models and weights.
skripp··on Elon Musk's Demolition Crew
Is this a new thing? As a non-American the US is for us famous for the exact opposite in south/latin America.
skripp··on Thousands of Pablo Picasso’s works in a new online archive
Extremely easy.

But the resolution of the images are absolutely horrible...

skripp··on Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
By giving up enough you can have the possibility of having the U.S. army help you. Unless they for some reason don’t want to.
skripp··on Nesizm: NES emulator for Casio Prizm calculators
Thread hijack: where can I get a replacement screen? Mine is very scratched up.
skripp··on From Nand to Tetris (2017)
I highly recommend you play the game “Turing complete” alongside this course. Will give you an additional visual way of looking at the problems.
skripp··on Are Open-Source Large Language Models Catching Up?
I live in China. You can't use it here easily. Even if you use a VPN you still need a non-Chinese phone number.
skripp··on GIMP 3.0 has a release schedule
I also can’t stand the gimp ui/ux. I haven’t tried it myself but I just googled this[0].

skripp··on Google can turn ANC earbuds into a heart rate monitor with no extra hardware
In 2003 I installed a scale in our dorm toilet. When you sat down you push a button and when done you push it again. If you were in the top five you could enter your (three letter max) name using a two button system. Top five were displayed using a super low resolution screen similar to a pinball high score screen.
skripp··on What is the Demoscene? An interview
I can also recommend Sunvox as a great tracker, but it’s much more than that. Free on most platforms and around 10 usd on iOS/android.
skripp··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
> I had to tell him not to do that, but I was kind of proud of him for having the temerity to go for it.

You told him off for such a small thing? You were impressed but didn’t give encouragement? You are a horrible parent.

skripp··on n8n.io - A powerful workflow automation tool
Maybe Node-RED?
skripp··on Xiaomi CyberDog 2
This is not a dog replacement. It's a robot that looks like a dog.
skripp··on Fantastic Learning Resources
The three books I recommend are these: {0,1,2}. The first two are best read together and maybe sprinkle in a bit of [2]. If you are on Linux or Mac then the last one obviously has to be substituted for something else.

skripp··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
> It's because they've become increasingly obnoxious.

Earlier this week I got served a 1.5 HOUR long ad by YouTube for a bank here in Hong Kong.

skripp··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
I kind of get your point (i think?) but maybe you shouldn't try to belittle the use of the word "supremacists" in the context of modern language. Try looking up a definition if you are unsure. Maybe you disagree on the definition but that is probably the mainstream one...
skripp··on Writing a SQLite Clone from Scratch in C (2022)
I love these type of projects. This is definitely on the top of my reading list now.

Another wonderful “from scratch” resource is “Crafting interpreters” [0] that I was recommended here on hn.

skripp··on Hubble sees possible runaway black hole creating a trail of stars
Did you read all three? The first one isn't great but as a trilogy I found it quite good. There are several places where the story building contradicts itself but if you are willing to look past those then it's solid science fiction. It's not on the level of Arthur C. Clarke or Asimov but they were obviosly big influences.
skripp··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
To share. But it's a very obvious check-box.
skripp··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
It's hard not to be cynical here... the trolls might very well be the ones selling the equipment.
skripp··on Signal would 'walk' from UK if Online Safety Bill undermined encryption
> The government said its proposal was not "a ban on end-to-end encryption".

> Critics say companies could be required by Ofcom to scan messages on encrypted apps for child sexual abuse material or terrorism content under the new law.

So, what's going on here? Is it going to be E2EE between user and user and then also a copy E2EE between user and the government? What a time to be alive.

Or is the law going to require them to scan encrypted messages for child abuse and terrorism content? Unless they are required to hand over the keys then... how is that going to work?

skripp··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say here. The creator shouldn't be the owner of the work, the owner of the work should? That's EXACTLY how the world works and has worked for longer than you have lived.

You can buy a piece of art from someone and get all the royalities if you aren't creative but have money.

skripp··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
That pretty much means your old. :-) How about: "I came in as a wrecking ball"? Or "I'm in love with your body." from the absolutly horrible song "Shape of you"?
skripp··on Show HN: Trading cards made with e-ink displays
Only time I've seen this was an IKEA in Shanghai about 5 years ago. They had a sign that said that umbrellas cost (equivalent to) $1 if it was raining outside and $3 if it wasn't. :)
skripp··on Ask HN: In 2022, what is the proper way to get into machine/deep learning?
MIT 6.041[1] is a very good course I can recommend. Not sure if MITx 6.431x on edx is the same, but it's the same teacher in any case.

skripp··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
libmad "tutorial". The + does nothing.
skripp··on Lisp in 99 lines of C and how to write one yourself [pdf]
Anyone have any input on:

https://www.buildyourownlisp.com/

It's been in my bookmarks for a long time but I've never really had time to really start it. The "who is this for" page say:

"This book is for anyone wanting to learn C, or who has once wondered how to build their own programming language.".

Well, I'm fairly competent in C (but not great) but would like to get a glimpse of what it's like to build my own language. Is it worth the time?

skripp··on The Crime That Killed Shinzo Abe
I lived in London a couple of years in the early 2000s and me and my roommates used to watch Jeremy Paxman interview politicians and we were more or less in chock that he actually pushed them when they tried their usual non-answers.

Now, we were quite young and didn’t really know that much about British politics to get that much out of it but it was so refreshing to see a interviewer that didn’t just back down like they do back in my home country.
