skellington··on This map is not upside down
The weirdest thing about this to me is I was just thinking about the arbitrariness of current North being up the other day and then this article pops up here.

They're reading our freaking brains!

skellington··on What's Up with Peter Thiel's Obsession with the Antichrist?
It's not literal.

It says directly in the article:

"...defined the practice of politics as a struggle against an existential enemy, arguing that politics is just religion in disguise." and "human societies tend to spiral toward violence in a hunt for scapegoats."

The antichrist idea is metaphor that he likes.

skellington··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
I know you're just willfully dumb, but other people reading might think you actually have a point.

No army in the world including the US could stop a civilian uprising of even a million people who have just rifles and the will to fight. They don't need nukes, tanks, or airplanes. If a large enough percentage of people, say 2% of the population, decided to fight a civil war, the US army/gov would fall in a few months if the rebels knew what they were doing.

It would be a guerilla war. And all of the critical infrastructure in the US could be destroyed in a month. No gas. No electricity. Smaller uprisings would be easily squashed.

Now, would this ever happen? Unlikely. Americans can barely get their fat asses out of bed much less do military operations for weeks at a time. Things would have to get incredibly bad and a leader would have to organize it. But it is possible.

skellington··on Three farmers on monopolies and mismanagement in U.S. agriculture
Yeah but at least they're also destroying the soil to grow all that shit Monsanto roundup-ready corn/soy/alfalfa/etc. for no profit and as an added bonus they get to kill all those pesky insects and bees!
skellington··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
You're right. It's the only human trait that has no genetic link. Convenient. That's why dogs and humans also have equal IQs.
skellington··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
You are hilarious.

Schools are dominated by leftwing CRT ideology. It's the rare exception when there is real pushback against dinosaurs or evolution. I very much doubt that you are as angry about Islamic pushback against sex topics in school.

The reward structures, the dumbing down of courses, removing accelerated courses, passing everyone, the move against merit, the removal of structure, discipline, and punishment for bad behavior all come from liberal ideas on teaching.

Anyone who demands standards, values merit, values hard work with high expectations is labeled a fascist, colonizer, or some other pejorative. "Ways of knowing" is an idea that permeates modern teaching where we can't judge or grade anyone for what they know or don't know because different people just "know" differently. Grades are racist. Expectations are racist. Math is racist.

"Your goals"...hilarious. I guess it's your world and we're all just living in it.

But seriously, inequality is a complex issue, just 'let's soak the rich' is a dumb take and won't solve anything.

But social safety nets, estate taxes, single-payer fed health insurance, etc.. might be interesting as well as other ways to approach this. For example, maybe corporate tax rate should be ZERO, but some percentage of profits (let's say 25%) should be paid as dividend to employees.

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
HN has a very specific viewpoint on the average.

Which is deeply ironic given its association with the most hardcore of venture capitalists.

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
Thanks for the rational reply.

Totally agree, Congress must reduce spending.

They had to increase the spending cap because we will be bouncing off it soon.

The history of Republicans is not good when it comes to reigning in spending. Neo-cons are just as bad as Democrats and some Democrats actually reduced spending. So, this shouldn't be such a tribal issue.

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
This is incredibly dumb.

What happens when the stock market is up one year and down the next?

What happens when you force them all to sell and there is not enough liquidity to support current prices so the act of selling hammers the value?

You are just saying "let's slowing take equity away from founders" so we can throw it away into wasteful gov. spending.

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
You would have to double current income taxes to cover the deficit.

I already pay 50%, how much do you want?

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
You guys just prove over and over again you don't know how anything works.
skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
It always amazes me that we are on this super hardcore capitalist site 'hacker news' and yet so few people here know how income works at the highest levels.

Super high earners don't earn W2 income. It's mostly long term cap gains or gains in tax advantaged accounts. A 90% tax would just encourage them to never sell their stock and to borrow against it instead.

skellington··on Doge Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
It's been proven in the past that this does not increase revenue in the long run.

If you want to significantly increase revenue, you'd have to tax the middle class harder.

I'm not automatically against taxing high income people, but the top 10% ALREADY pay 76% of federal personal income taxes.

skellington··on BYD has already produced its first solid-state cells
Hard disagree (as a person that owns EV).

While it's true that most people don't drive that far daily, it's also true that most people want their cars to be multipurpose.

Most EVs can only be time-efficiently charged to 80% while DC fast charging because the charge curve drops a lot.

And nobody want the pucker factor of getting much below 10% while road tripping.

So, you're really only working with 70% of the max range. At 'normal' freeway speeds of 70mph+, most EV max ranges are less than 300 miles, and 70% of that is 210 usable miles.

You can make it work, but it feels like you're always managing and thinking about charge level vs a car which usually has 400+ miles of range on the freeway.

IMO the base range for EVs needs to be 500 miles, to get 350 miles of usable range, plus 350kW+ charging so charge stops are 10 minutes ish. And the Chinese EV companies have 400kW+ charging cars already, with announcements for 600kW charging!

So battery energy density is critical to getting the range that people want without making the cars even heavier.

skellington··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
If you are trying to reach race/gender based quotas, you simply cannot hire white men anymore when they are 90% of the applicants. Or at least, you must attempt to minimize it as much as possible. Math.

skellington··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
How do you know? Do you work for FAA?

We wouldn't have to guess and allow for right-wing conjectures if FAA were just transparent on the process and if any changes have been made.

skellington··on Confusion, uncertainty in industry as Army contracts seemingly halted
I didn't realize I was talking to George Bush.

I guess the US gets to unilaterally decide what's right and wrong for the world, and kill however many people it takes to demonstrate the shining hope that is Western democracy!

skellington··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
I saw that. But it's laced with political overtones. The question is not just # of controllers, it's the quality of controllers.

Have they lowered the standards to get through ATC school? What is the truth?

Just asking so I have ammunition against right-wing arguments.

skellington··on Confusion, uncertainty in industry as Army contracts seemingly halted
WWII was an invasion into Europe, not a civil war.

Every time we've intervened in civil wars, the outcome has been bad, with one exception -- Korea.

The problems with your thinking are:

#1 It's how the neo-cons think and is the justification for all of the US terrorism in the past 40+ years.

#2 Who are you to say what the best outcome for another people are? Which people? What group in Syria will have this great outcome now that it's controlled by Isis?

#3 How many people did you get to kill to experiment with nation building? Do you really understand the internal power dynamics of countries like Syria, Iraq? Or are you practicing a form of Imperialism?

skellington··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
Uh oh, you posted something factual that invites questions. HN not going to like this...

>>>Facing pressure to diversify an overwhelmingly white workforce, the FAA began using a biographical test as a first screen of candidates. Minority candidates were fed “buzz words” to bump their resumes up to top priority. Apparently saying your worst subject in school was science served as a golden ticket. Correct answers to the take-home biographical questionnaire were given in their entirety. These questionnaires were later banned. This was dumb, but it’s not the problem.<<<

Ok, besides the fact that this, along with the evidence that the magic keywords were given in secret to special groups, is blatantly illegal, after they banned it, what did the criteria become? What is the criteria today?

Did they switch to a primarily merit/skills based assessment of candidates? Did they lower standards and if so, by how much? Have they tracked their assessment performance against real-world performance across the ATC pool?

skellington··on Confusion, uncertainty in industry as Army contracts seemingly halted
So the US has the moral right to install a western style gov into other countries?

How many times do we have to go down this road, tear apart countries, fuck them up more, and leave with everything in worse shape than before?

The US does not have the right to interfere and has proven over and over again that it will do all of the wrong things while trying to force other people with different ways of living and thinking to behave in a western way.

skellington··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying people will ask. It's unfortunate.
skellington··on Confusion, uncertainty in industry as Army contracts seemingly halted
He didn't "let it devolve into a civil war." He authorized the CIA to fund rebel groups which maintained and expanded the civil war.

What exactly do you suggest Obama should have done with "the power of the USA to stabilize it?" Invade? How would trying to 'fix' Syria be any different than trying to fix Iraq or Afghanistan?

skellington··on Confusion, uncertainty in industry as Army contracts seemingly halted
There is no conventional war with China the US can win. Therefore, it's a big fucking waste of money to pretend we can with aircraft carriers and tanks. Nuclear weapons are relatively cheap. What the US military is good at is dropping bombs that cost the equivalent of houses onto primitive people living in tents.

The US invaded at least 2 countries and killed 2 million plus people in the last 25 years. Where were you then to stop the "invasion?"

skellington··on Nvidia’s $589B DeepSeek rout
True, but current price isn't based on fundamentals, it's based on hype-value.

nVidia is going to be a very volatile stock for years to come.

I don't see deepseek changing nvidia's short term growth potential though. Efficiencies in training were always inevitable, but more GPU still equals smarter AI....probably.

skellington··on Nvidia’s $589B DeepSeek rout
Markets aren't rational.

NVidia is currently a hype stock which means LOTS of speculation, probably with lots of leverage. So, the people who have made large gains and/or are leveraged are highly incentivized to panic sell on any PERCEIVED bad news. It doesn't even matter if the bad news will materially impact sales. What matters is how the other gamblers will react to the news and getting in front of them.

:)

skellington··on It sure looks like Meta stole a lot of books to build its AI
What other speech? There is literally no limit to what you can say if it's negative towards white men, the church, Trump, etc. Not that I'm defending those specific things. I just notice the hypocrisy.
