skellera··on Ask HN: Are you also getting extremely obvious spam bypassing Gmail's filters?
I’m getting the worst of both. Important emails in spam and tons of spam emails in main inbox.

I feel like it used to be near perfect. Something must’ve broken the models.

skellera··on A third of Stitch Fix employees quit after new CEO ends flexible work hours
You can see the difference in recommendation by something like Trunk Club which has the entire Nordstrom catalog to pull from. The stylists who work there also tend to be higher quality.
skellera··on Clubhouse downloads are falling
Guy Raz makes a good point in the How I Built This episode with the Clubhouse founders. You can have a really interesting conversation with someone but that conversation doesn’t necessarily make good radio that’s interesting to others.

So much of that catalog would be gurus repeating the same stuff over and over again. It would be so hard to sort through all of it to the find interesting parts.

I think it’s wonderfully interesting to be pulled into the conversations of people I look up to because it feels genuine. But once the masses join the platform, everything becomes so curated to specific topics that it loses the magic. It isn’t any better than a badly produced podcast or blog.

Live audio and video will still be the future but this isn’t it. Or, isn’t yet.

skellera··on Lambda School agrees to end deceptive educational financing practices
That’s giving way too much credit. I’m sure if you asked 100 people if ISAs from a bootcamp were the same as government backed student loans, you’d get pretty close to 100 “no.”
skellera··on What's new in Svelte (Dec 2020)
Now that it’s been around for some time, what’s the general thought on it?

Anyone use it then go back to the traditional frameworks? Anyone love it and still think it’s the next big thing?

skellera··on A group of recent Princeton graduates has won more than $6M in 66 lottery wins
I worked at a bar that had those stacks of pull tab cards. Random cards in the stack would give you cash that you exchanged the card for.

The manager of the bar would know which ones were redeemed so if it got low and he knew the big money cards weren’t won yet, he’d go play the machine until he got it.

skellera··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Being on a VPN, have blockers on, or not logged into google are a few things that will increase the captchas you’ll see.
skellera··on Netflix raises monthly charges for U.S. subscribers
Reality TV is cheap and engaging. The same reason it worked on broadcast/cable. It’s all about numbers now since Netflix is a large company.

I hope companies like HBO keep trying to win with quality over junk.

skellera··on Justice Department: Resolution with Purdue Pharma and Sackler Family
While small to the current scale of things, Purdue is a massive reason why it even became this scale.

The executives and the family should be jailed. They won’t be and that’s why this is sad. They will all continue to live wealthy lives off the deaths of so many people.

A fine is nothing and it just tells anyone who is thinking of doing the same that it’s still potentially worth doing.

skellera··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
You can turn off the smart features on a Vizio TV by declining the ACR terms during set up. It essentially makes it a dumb TV.

Best part is, the TVs are essentially subsidized by ACR and selling your data so you’re getting a deal by not paying the “data tax.”

skellera··on NASA Publishes Artemis Plan to Land First Woman, Next Man on Moon in 2024
Well now that we’re sending women out there, there’s a good reason to solve it.

I’m sure there are a million other risks for going to the moon, seems a little reductive to say women shouldn’t go because it affects their eggs. They are more likely to die on their trip than if they didn’t go, yet we still send men.

Just like every other issue, we’ll solve them. But we don’t just give up.

skellera··on NASA Publishes Artemis Plan to Land First Woman, Next Man on Moon in 2024
Currently, the push to become a multi-planetary species is just as much about marketing and it is about the technology. We need people excited for space so they go into fields where they can advance our ability to do stuff in space.

Finally putting a woman on the moon will give a face to young girls to look up to. That will bring a whole new set of smart people into the field. It’s not like we’re giving up on Mars because of it.

skellera··on When Asbestos Was a Gift Fit for a King
At least we think about it. The miracle material, graphene, has properties that could potentially cause problems when breathed in [0]. So at least we know what to look for and can mitigate.

That said, who knows what other material might come about that causes problems 40 years later in a different way. We will learn when it comes but at least we’re starting to be more aware of potential problems.

skellera··on Google discontinues the Pixel 4, nine months after release
The newest phones are so overpowered for their actual use. They should last years. The only thing will be switching out batteries from time to time.
skellera··on Why there’s so little left of the early internet (2019)
Are there really bots going around filling out random guestbooks on the Internet in 2020?
skellera··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
Pretty sure Instagram won the Snap battle when they copied stories. Not sure who still considers Snap a major contender in the long run.

I wouldn’t say Instagram is fading. Just that Tiktok is keeping the younger generation away from it. Snap is losing on both sides because of them.

skellera··on Justice Department is scrutinizing takeover of Credit Karma by Intuit
I always say this when I can, Credit Karma’s support is terrible. I would never recommend them. Great if nothing goes wrong but you’ll regret it if you need them for something.
skellera··on Public asked to report receipt of any unsolicited packages of seeds
There are so many items that have reviews for obviously different items right now. I’ve seen it on a lot of COVID related items like no contact thermometers.

Should be easy to catch these.

skellera··on A graphical analysis of women's tops sold on Goodwill's website
I just went to Goodwill last weekend. They seemed to have more “new” items than I remembered. I assume it’s cheap overstock that’s donated vs marked down.
skellera··on US online grocery sales hit record $7.2B in June
I’ve been thinking about prices that make this worth it. Amazon Fresh is free delivery over a certain amount with Prime. I’m sure I’m paying a bit more per item but it can’t be more than the time I’m saving by not browsing and avoiding impulse buys.

It seems like a win-win for me. Does anyone have a counter to that?

skellera··on MSU Vice President of research & innovation Steve Hsu has been forced to resign
Anyone looking for context.

https://infoproc.blogspot.com/2020/06/twitter-attacks-and-de...

Does anyone have more information for the opposing side?

Seems pretty terrible that people can take things you said over the years out of context and destroy your reputation.

skellera··on Apple’s secretive AR and VR Headset plans altered by internal differences
Seriously, his reasoning for not needing better graphics in VR is out of touch with the purpose of VR. I now wish he left sooner so they would’ve focused on the best possible VR experience.
skellera··on Apple’s secretive AR and VR Headset plans altered by internal differences
A lot of people seemed to miss the part that the hub would connect wirelessly.

You could still do that. Just plugging in something in the same room is not that much more difficult. I personally would’ve preferred higher graphics. I love my quest but there needs to be a premium offering that is wireless and it seems like that’s what they were going to do. Ive’s response about not taking people out of the world is stupid. That’s the point of VR.

skellera··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
That’s fine to me if it got us to this point. Another company can come in and do it better if there is really room to improve.

If something doesn’t work, SpaceX will fix it. You really don’t give their engineers enough credit.

skellera··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
Spotify has an ad-supported free tier. This will be available on that, along with all their other podcasts.
skellera··on Medical staff say virus stigma driving Tokyo hospitals to edge of collapse
I think they’re going off a per hour basis. If a resident is working an 80 hour week, they aren’t getting paid much per hour.
skellera··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
I used to draw on planks of wood with a magnifying glass when a I was a kid. Could add another thing for you to do!
skellera··on Additional 6.6M File for Initial Unemployment Benefits [pdf]
I don’t wish a bad outcome but if it happens, hopefully people realize we need a different system for healthcare.
skellera··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
I made a mistake of overthinking my initial assessment about 6 months ago. I have since learned a lot and have grown as an engineer. Does that mistake prevent my application from being considered?
skellera··on CSS Zen Garden
Sure you could do everything on the HTML with Tailwind but they do recommend composing component classes for regularly used things. I’m not saying that solves all your concerns but it helps.

Abstracting out CSS into utility classes can make it much quicker to get a consistent looking site up while still giving you a little more control over the look and feel. Of course you can misuse this but I think people who don’t understand standard CSS make a much bigger mess of it than if they have something like Tailwind.
