skeeterbug··on Flight Simulator 2020 – New Development Footage
I loved both of those missions! The Singapore mission is so satisfying when flying ILS and then coming out of the clouds right in front of the runway.
skeeterbug··on Ask HN: Does working remotely hinder the ability to get a mortgage?
I had to have my manager sign a letter that I was a full time remote employee.
skeeterbug··on Show HN: I'm 12, learning JS, and wrote Wolfram's cellular automaton in Node
Is this serious? I started programming around 9 or 10 on a Commodore 64. I would go to the local library to get programming books for it. Now you can hit F12 in your browser and get a powerful console into JS. JS is fine, encourage the thirst for knowledge.
skeeterbug··on Lessons from migrating a large codebase to React 16
Yeah, I don't think these people worked on code that targeted IE6-8. Horrible times.
skeeterbug··on 150 days of living and coding in a van
Reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohcwksrvDOg
skeeterbug··on Why is React is taking over front-end development?
If you have a simple, well documented library, is there a reason to search on it as often?
skeeterbug··on VS Code uses 13% CPU when idle due to blinking cursor rendering
Define a lot. Every plugin I use on Atom run on Linux fine.
skeeterbug··on Why Linux sucks and will never compete with Windows or OS X
I am aware. Thanks for the detailed response though.
skeeterbug··on Why Linux sucks and will never compete with Windows or OS X
They are looking at the user agent and determining that I am using an "Unsupported" browser. Some sites show a banner, others (OWA) fall back to a different UI.
skeeterbug··on Why Linux sucks and will never compete with Windows or OS X
I switched recently from Windows 10 to Ubuntu 16 at home (I use a Mac at work). Here has been my experience:

* Audio works perfect (Astro mixamp)

* Video works perfect (NVidia)

* Installed several games on Steam

  * TF2, CS, Factorio, Kerbal, etc all run great

  * Rust is laggy, however is alpha, I am not sure how much time they have spent optimizing linux at this point
* XBox 360 controller works perfect

* GnuCash wouldn't open the file saved from the windows version

  * Installed a sqlite lib to resolve this
* TrueCrypt volume mounts OK

* A few sites fail to detect Chromium properly, I use FF to work around this

* Crashplan backups work without issues

* Cisco VPN client works great

* Remote desktop software works OK

The development experience on Linux is a lot better. You get a nice shell, package manager, and compilers. Docker containers launch very quickly. No more windows path limits. Unity has grown on me as well. I couldn't be happier with my choice right now.

skeeterbug··on React: Mixins Considered Harmful

  Python 2.7.12 (default, Jul 1 2016, 15:12:24)
  [GCC 5.4.0 20160609] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

Python 3.5.1 yields the same result

skeeterbug··on Grunt 1.0.0 released
Thanks a lot for your hard work and keeping the project stable. The Infor CRM mobile team added grunt to our project back in July of 2013. I have probably written about a dozen plugins and custom tasks internally. The plugin API docs are a great resource. I love the configuration first approach with the ability to fall back to code if needed. It has really treated us well.

I also gave a presentation at our partner conference a year and a half ago on using grunt for development. Keep up the great work!

skeeterbug··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
Update: The bug is with pulp server https://github.com/bodil/pulp/issues/133
skeeterbug··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
My memory could be off (on which command failed). I think I still have the repo on my home machine, so I could re-visit and file a bug report. At the time I kept pursuing elm instead. Reports of better FFI with JS is why I had explored PureScript.
skeeterbug··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
My experience with Purescript/pulp was rather negative. Basic commands were throwing errors (pulp init IIRC) so I decided to not even consider it for anything serious.
skeeterbug··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
Not true at all. TypeSript has ES6 modules and its own module syntax. I don't know if it has improved recently, but using ES6 modules in our TS was nearly impossible if using type definitions using the old module syntax.
skeeterbug··on Upgrading from React 0.11.2 to 0.14.7 in 347 easy steps
They aren't building Linux stack software. Re-read what you replied to:

> I also built a Makefile-centric web development build workflow.

skeeterbug··on Bitbucket secrets
Bitbucket Server (Previously Stash) does not have the Omnibar. At least our version doesn't (4.3).
skeeterbug··on Size isn't everything for the modest creator of SQLite (2007)
Chrome uses it for local storage too right?
skeeterbug··on Tcl/tk vs. the web
>But why are we using web in the first place?

>Because of hype and stupid sysadmins that blocked everything but HTTP protocol (Deep Packet Inspection might block TCP:80 because people are scared it could be an SSH server with tunneling enabled on the other side).

So we are required to install an app locally for everything and give access to our entire system? No thanks.

skeeterbug··on React Native for Android
Is sky engine a Google project?
skeeterbug··on GCC is moving to git
A central origin sure. It is nice knowing I can work offline which is my general workflow. I can also experiment with local branches and not push them to a remote.
skeeterbug··on Observables
http://cycle.js.org/documentation.html

5 documented functions, and one documented property. This is probably one of the most minimal/clean API's I have seen.

skeeterbug··on Observables
How is this anything like reading Java? Are you sure you looked at the correct examples? Is it because of "main" and the ES6 imports at the top? This comment is truly baffling to me.
skeeterbug··on Google has quietly launched a GitHub competitor
Doesn't BitBucket/Stash provide more structure for code reviews? You can lock down the main branch and force code to get merged via a PR.
skeeterbug··on Management things I learned at Imgur
If you can't fire or promote them are you really their manager?
skeeterbug··on Five Years of Google Closure
This kind of reminds me of dojo (minus the good build system). It is very much a jack of all trades, master of none. There are too many good libraries out there to tie yourself down to one monolithic framework. Have fun building your dojo project in browserify, webpack, r.js, or any other build system. You miss out on good promise libraries, good UI libraries like React, Polymer, etc. Instead you get a promise library that is not A+ compliant, and the shit that is dijit._Widget. Don't forget you are now tied down to dojo declare's class system (which they are abandoning in dojo2).
skeeterbug··on Bitbucket announces Connect platform
Define better though? Github is clearly more about the "community". You can explore and see trending repos and overall a much better experience of discovery. Bitbucket has a few nice features too, but it seems to be more geared for closed source/private teams.
skeeterbug··on Angular 2: Built on TypeScript
"Special shout out to Yehuda Katz, who helped us design the annotation+decorator proposal which helped make this work possible."

How in the world does this man keep up with all these projects? He needs to write a book on motivation.

skeeterbug··on Ask HN: TrueCrypt audit status?
It is not only full disk encryption. I have used a file container encrypted with financial information on linux and windows over the years. I can mount that file on either OS.
