skarz··on Monero appears to be in the midst of a successful 51% attack
Well, there you have it. GPT-5 failed a basic explanation lol.
skarz··on The ex-CIA agents deciding Facebook's content policy (2022)
>These people are trained to sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day reading mostly garbage and making objective summaries.

You just described the entire Cyber Mission Force, lol.

skarz··on Claude vs. Gemini: Testing on 1M Tokens of Context
Try one of these. They have the popup but you can dismiss it.

skarz··on Grok 4 Launch [video]
Personally I think having the option to make grok's response public can be helpful, much like a community note. Let's face it, on reddit or Facebook or YouTube the first thing people do now is go straight to the comments for context or feedback. As they say, the real answer is always in the comments.
skarz··on Authors hit by bad reviews on Goodreads before review copies are even circulated
>Amazon has very sophisticated anti-Astroturfing measures.

And yet they won't do anything about sellers who change their listing to a completely different product once it gets to the 4-5 star range. Can't tell you how many times I've been looking at some tool or gadget only to glance at the reviews and see people mentioning socks.

The United States has that, it's called Consumer Reports. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_Reports
skarz··on Cloudflare CEO: Football piracy blocks will claim lives
And not just DDoS protection, but privacy. Cloudflare offers a huge amount of privacy protection which causes huge headaches for IP holders. You can read online about the feedback loop of Cloudflare/OVH for example sending automated notices back and forth. Usually the process is:

1. IP holder representative sends notice to Cloudflare 2. Cloudflare sends automated notice to account manager 3. Cloudflare informs person from step 1 of who actually hosts the site 4. Person from #1 emails web host who is probably a shady company who in turn ignores email 5. Nothing happens

skarz··on Google AI Ultra
I wonder how viable the referral link/referrer code method is? Based on my own YouTube viewing habits it seems like a lot of prominent channels have gone that route. Seems like it could work for the web overall. Ads would no longer have to target via cookies or browsing history because you could just serve links or offer codes related to your site's content.
skarz··on A simple search engine from scratch
Yes, "now". According to Google Trends[0] there was little to no search interest in the term until December 2023.

Usage of 'grokked' on HN: 1,147[1]

Usage of 'hacked' on HN: 37,272[2]

skarz··on A simple search engine from scratch
What does it even mean?
skarz··on A simple search engine from scratch
Is 'grokked' a common verb now? I had never even heard the word until Musk's AI.
skarz··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
What's the best service or app for tracking data breaches where your username and password are leaked? I'm trying to mitigate some leaks through ProtonPass but it's very frustrating as they simply say "password ****123 was found on the dark web" (they actually redact the full password) so then I manually have to go through my 100+ passwords and look for that particular password.
skarz··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
VPN?
skarz··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
Directly adjacent to the post it says "Hi, I'm Troy Hunt, I write this blog, run "Have I Been Pwned" and am a Microsoft Regional Director and MVP who travels the world speaking at events and training technology professionals"

That reads to me like he's a Microsoft Employee. It's obviously important/significant enough to include it prominently on his website.

skarz··on Twitter/X migrated to Cloudflare, bypassing Brazilian block
MANY piracy websites and even 4chan use Cloudflare. That’s nothing compared to X/Twitter.
skarz··on Live proxy and VPN detection
Isn't it significantly easier to just compare the IP of the visitor against a database of known VPN IPs?
skarz··on LastPass says DevOps engineer’s hacked computer led to security breach in 2022
I think something that should have been in the title is that the breach was facilitated by a vulnerability in an application that many users here might have, Plex. They don’t speak on the nature of the vulnerability in that application. Has it been addressed and fixed through security patches already, or is Plex still potentially dangerous right now?
skarz··on Google Search results are below the fold
Brave Search, Searx, Metager, DDG, Presearch, Swisscows, Starpage... So many to choose from!
skarz··on Start Self Hosting
Interesting contrast to this article[1] which was posted to HN several days ago

skarz··on Google Search Is Dying
Honestly, I append Reddit, Stackoverflow, or Stackexchange to probably 75% of my searches.

From my point of view, there's wayyyy too many blog sites out there full of crap content, meanwhile forum posts on these sites often yield results that are something I can actually do/use.

skarz··on Washington state shuts down Amazon price-fixing program nationwide
Now if only the people behind diapers.com made a comeback.

This whole thing was sparked by that case where Amazon priced out diapers.com to make them go bankrupt - only to turn around and buy diapers.com

skarz··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
Pfizer would be smart to not push for mandates -- as would anyone else wanting to see more vaccinations, period. More people would probably get their vaccine by choice if it were not forced on them. WE have known this for a long time. Glad they are catching wind of how this all works, psychologically.
skarz··on Netflix raises prices on all plans in US
“Netflix pushes all reeled in users back to competition and/or piracy”

“Piracy levels surge after Netflix implements another price hike.”

Seriously how many times do they think they can get away with this in a time where new streaming services pop up every month?

skarz··on PayPal faces lawsuit for freezing customer accounts and funds
This has happened to me in the past. They thought something was suspicious about my account and froze it entirely.

Remember: Paypal is not a bank. That's not your money, that's theirs and they're letting you use it.

Don't keep money in paypal. transfer or spend it immediately.

skarz··on Lawsuit aiming to break up Facebook group Meta can go ahead, US court rules
I mentioned this last time when the FTC refiled its complaint but the FTC still has a pretty tough case to prove here.

Among other points the core of the FTCs complaint states Facebooks market power dominance by stating its largest competitor is Snapchat. While not impossible I think it'll be tough to convince people that platforms like Twitter and TikTok operate in a completely different market than Facebook does while also saying that Snapchat is in that market.

skarz··on Google says iMessage is too powerful
While I’m not a proponent of Apple’s walled garden approach, I think this stuff about bullying over the blue indicator is just Google using something to shame Apple so that Google can get what they want. Even if Apple introduced RCS to their phones to give better compatibility to Android features, the blue indicator would still show that the message was sent with end-to-end encryption which is something RCS doesn’t do according to this article. In my mind, a better solution for Apple would be to release an iMessage app on the Play Store or to work with Google on building a better messaging service that includes those features. But Apple probably won’t do that because it’s actually better for sales if they do have features that allow their users to feel superior to others, as cynical as that sounds.
skarz··on Forced to sell chipless ink cartridges, Canon tells customers how to bypass DRM
Maybe there wouldn't be a global chip shortage if they didn't put them in products that don't need them.
skarz··on Facebook collecting people's data even when accounts are deactivated
I prefer an article explaining how over why.
skarz··on Illegal movie streaming service Popcorn Time shuts down
After discovering rarbg and Blu-ray quality rips, I never went back to popcorn time. Hosting a plex server on a Rpi with 2 4TB external HDD’s was one of the best things I’ve done.
