sjm··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
You are trying to start fights all over this post and I'm not sure why, but please don't put words in my mouth. At no point did I even remotely suggest that people shouldn't have access to smartphones.
sjm··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
Are any of those things impossible without sideloading or the DMA? Those things will only be riskier on your phone with all the malware that will undoubtedly spread throughout fully open marketplaces. I really do not want my mom accidentally installing her "Chase Bank" app from www.chazebank.cc.
sjm··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
How is that at all different from what you could already do with Apple devices?
sjm··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
What is with these "ti", "ni", "fi" typos? Weird.
sjm··on Stable Diffusion 3
The example images look so bad. Absolutely zero artistic value.
sjm··on Vision Pro teardown part 2: What’s the display resolution?
You can change the resolution though? If you go to Displays on your mac you can change the resolution of the AVP mirroring. I find it works much better at "1080p" than the default since it makes small text much more readable.
sjm··on Former Google CEO Launched a Company with His Girlfriend. It's Not Going Well
With a "$20 billion fortune", investing $100 million is the equivalent of someone with a "$100,000 fortune" investing $500.

Probably not a welcome sentiment on HN, but billionaires really shouldn't exist.

sjm··on Nature: Programming language to experience the joy of programming
Sometimes I think we need more verbosity in programming languages. Imagine you're new to programming and come across this,

- what the hell is fmt? - what the hell is fn? - int? - n? - printf? what is f? - what is %d?

I know this probably isn't the crowd for this, but if my non-programmer friends curious about learning to code saw this they'd run for the hills. Sure this isn't a "learn to code" language, but a little verbosity is IMO not a bad thing: it is more humanist and can be self-documenting.

sjm··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
lol exactly, especially on Twitter. Who's in charge of branding here? dril?
sjm··on YKK: Japan’s Zipper King [video]
They regularly go on sale; there are t-shirts for $49 on their site right now. But in any case JE is not _too_ marked up compared to other brands, given the quality, cuts, and the fact that all the t-shirts are made in LA by workers given fair wages.
sjm··on YKK: Japan’s Zipper King [video]
Yeah RiRi zippers are great. John Elliott in the US also uses them.
sjm··on Hipgnosis, the designers who changed the record sleeve
> There are interviews, too, with Peter Saville, best known for his sleek and minimalist design work with Joy Division and New Order, and something of a counterweight to Hipgnosis who, after all, mainly worked in a time of great musical excess.

Peter Saville helped design Jony Ive's "LoveFrom" typeface: https://www.wallpaper.com/design-interiors/corporate-design-...

sjm··on FiraCode: Free monospaced font with programming ligatures
Can't explain it, but to my eyes Jetbrains Mono is too robotic or mechanical, maybe clinical? whereas I love that Fira has some character and feels at least a bit Humanist for a monospaced font. The iA Writer fonts are another great option.
sjm··on Aptos, our modern successor to Calibri
Wow that's crazy, radio personality Carl Kasell was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw Aptos. Nailed it.
sjm··on Are the Americans Awake?
Not the millionaire part, but yeah it is nice. I work to live, not live to work, and your military job sounds horrible, so I'll pass :)
sjm··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Q2 being so slowed down compared to QuakeWorld makes a lot of sense when you read that John Carmack _hated_ the bunnyhopping bug in QW, and wanted everyone to be slow moving Terminators walking down hallways.

I'm with you though, I hated it, and my friends and I quickly went back to QW (+ QWTF) after trying Q2 briefly. I did have a soft spot for Rocket Arena 2 in Q2 though, that was fun.

sjm··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Yeah, the boss at the end of episode 1 (e1m7, House of Chthon) was way more interesting than end.bsp, and I remember really blew me away as a kid. Makes sense based on what others were saying about having the best levels up front.
sjm··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
Sure, but there's a big difference between leaked code vs. code cleaned up and officially released over 3 years after launch. Who knows what the Quake source looked like on the date they initially shipped. Quake also remained in development for quite a while, with the latest patch released ~March 1997 (original release June 96), and QuakeWorld last released end of 1998.
sjm··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
I was curious about this too. The QW code is different and I believe has fixed this. Example source for W_FireLightning in KTX: https://github.com/QW-Group/ktx/blob/6b8a50833d0ef738182cf7a...
sjm··on Rio: Terminal app built over WebGPU, WebAssembly and Rust
Yeah I'd love to know what this is aiming for over WezTerm, which already supports both WebGPU and OpenGL rendering. Maybe just that it is closer to being able to run in a browser?

I have to take a moment to just evangelize WezTerm a bit. I switched over from iTerm in the last few months and IMO WezTerm's absolute killer feature is its Lua-based configuration. You can do so much with it, down to running scripts on key binds, and the API is powerful enough to do virtually anything you want. For example I have some key binds that act differently when the active pane is running emacs vs. a shell.

sjm··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
98SE for gaming was perfect. 2000 was "ok" when you had to eventually switch. Everything after that was pretty terrible.
sjm··on Thoughts on Swift and Objective-C (2022)
As someone who has spent their professional life writing Objective-C (first pre-ARC, then ARC), now mostly Swift, the biggest benefit of Swift over Obj-C is how much more difficult/explicit it is to write unsafe code. You can totally shoot yourself in the foot with Objective-C. Swift is much safer. That in itself has undoubtedly led to an industry-wide improvement in code. Not to mention, obviously, that async/await in Swift is a huge leap forward, especially from the ever-rightward-moving blocks-within-blocks in Objective-C.

If you don't see how you're "sacrificing safety by continuing to write Objective-C", then you are missing something, IMO.

sjm··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
One thing all these comments bringing up "so are CDs" miss is the open physicality of vinyl. The above poster is talking about mixing vinyl records, which with CDs all becomes digital. With vinyl, you're physically placing a needle on top of a section of the disc, changing the physical speed of the rotations, etc.
sjm··on Twitter claims dead celebs are subscribing to Blue from beyond the grave
Twitter is explicitly communicating that dead celebrities have actively subscribed (paid $8/month) and verified a phone number, which is just inaccurate. At the least, they should have just left the legacy copy, because this is tasteless.
sjm··on Apocalypse Sow: Can Anything Stop the Feral Hog Invasion?
Don't know why you're getting downvoted -- this viral tweet was a huge catalyst to getting people aware of this issue. There's even a Reply All podcast about it: https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/n8hw3d
sjm··on Show HN: We are building an open-source IDE powered by AI
IMO Emacs is a perfect candidate for this kind of thing, or maybe something akin to LSP so you can bring your own editor. New GPT extensions are coming out daily for Emacs, e.g. https://github.com/xenodium/chatgpt-shell
sjm··on 2001: A Space Odyssey
The movie is worth watching purely to be absolutely amazed at the aesthetic vision Kubrick brought. I re-watched it recently and could not stop thinking about how modern, even futuristic, it still looks for a film from 1968.
sjm··on Open source espresso machine is one delicious rabbit hole inside another
Turbo shots [0] have sort of changed the game here though. Even with the most expensive gear, espresso has typically been inconsistent because the conventional wisdom has been to grind extremely fine and pound high-pressure water over a longer period of time (~30 seconds typically). This often leads to water finding channels through the coffee puck and over/under extraction, except for the rare occasions with perfect prep that you get a perfect extraction, but it's basically unrepeatable.

The new wisdom is grinding coarser, using less coffee, and sending water through at a lower pressure. So instead of an 18g:36g shot dripping out variably in 30 seconds, the aim is something like 15:45g in less than 20 seconds.

sjm··on Zed, the new code editor from Atom developers, has entered open beta
No mention of extensibility is a big red flag, and if it isn't open-source it presents the same risk as anyone adopting Atom originally ended up getting burned by.
