sjm··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Fine, 99% of China "landmass" does not have 50G. 100% of the US does not have 10G. The fact that in NYC, the richest city in the history of cities, most buildings still only have access to cable from a single provider is absolutely ridiculous. Urban centers is what is worth comparison here, and the US falls massively behind.
sjm··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
This is the same American-branded copium we see during discussions of socialized healthcare, which every other first-world country on the planet seems to manage. China has 10G and 50G home fiber. Zurich is larger geographically than Manhattan, while having much lower population density.
sjm··on Mamdani Hires Lisa Gelobter as Chief Tech Officer
And what has Mamdani lied about?
sjm··on Chinese AI models have lagged the US frontier by 7 months on average since 2023
And how much have they spent compared to US companies? What of carbon footprint?
sjm··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
Depicting deceased people with AI is objectively distasteful, especially from a self-described "ad guy" who should know better.
sjm··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
Yes. Pretty hypocritical for an article about "crossing red lines" to use AI slop for an image of a real person. Very disrespectful.
sjm··on The half-life of tech skills
Exactly. It's like the difference between thinking about tech proficiency in terms of "being good at C++" vs. being good at software engineering and being language agnostic.
sjm··on Show HN: A 'Choose Your Own Adventure' written in Emacs Org Mode
I know not everyone has this distaste for it, but as soon as I hit the landing it was so obviously AI-generated that I had to close it.
sjm··on Our narrative prison
Classic Thing, Japan. There are plenty of western movies that don't follow the three-act structure (off the top of my head, Apocalypse Now, Mulholland Drive (and probably most Lynch), Boyhood (and other Linklaters), basically any Robert Altman) and plenty of foreign films that do.
sjm··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
Out of curiosity, have you tried running extremely light roast/dense beans through your grinder? How does it perform with them?
sjm··on Sora is here
Anyone else find this stuff extremely distasteful? "Disrupting" creativity and art feels like it goes against our humanity.
sjm··on Every UUID Dot Com
np, I'm taking deadbeef-beef-4000-beef-deadbeefdead
sjm··on Germans decry influence of English as 'idiot's apostrophe' gets approval
When I lived in Bordeaux I remember seeing billboards basically advising young people to not use "txt speak" and instead write "real French" to preserve the language.
sjm··on John Carmack on inlined code (2014)
Reaction time is completely different to the input latency Carmack is worrying about in his scenario. Imagine if you thought I'm going to move my arm, and 200ms later your arm actually moved. Apply the same to a first-person shooter --- imagine you nudge your mouse slightly, and 200ms later you get some movement on screen. That is ___hugely___ noticeable.
sjm··on American WWII bomb explodes at Japanese airport, causing large crater in taxiway
In Cambodia too, where the US dropped 540,000 tons of bombs during the Vietnam war.
sjm··on Good programmers worry about data structures and their relationships
I once wrote to John Carmack as a Quake-obsessed kid, asking for any advice he has for an aspiring programmer and if he had any favourite books. To my surprise he wrote back a really thoughtful response, including the following:

"Read The Mythical Man Month. I remember thinking that a book that old can't say anything relevant about software development today, but I was wrong."

sjm··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
That is ultimately a better outcome than we currently have, where the exact same thing happens, except it's only large corporations benefitting. Politicians _should_ be buying votes from the working class and tangibly improving their lives in the process.
sjm··on Psilocybin desynchronizes the human brain
Mushrooms have saved more people than they have harmed, I guarantee you. I believe you have a very warped or misguided understanding of what exactly psilocybin is and I'd encourage you to learn.
sjm··on IRC technology news from the first half of 2024
It is so cool that eggdrop is still in development. Basically how I first learned programming (plus mIRC scripting!)
sjm··on Quake in 13kb (2021)
It did but it was not enabled by default IIRC. Also fun fact the "crosshair" in original Quake was limited to only the character "+" from the character set. QuakeWorld later introduced a "crosshair 2" which was a slightly more complicated bitmap that you could change the color of.
sjm··on Ultrasonic Coffee
Yeah I like La Cabra but it's become a bit of a TikTok spot. The last time I walked past the SoHo location there was a line 50 ft out the door.

Agreed it's a shame people here are so proud of the "hustle" culture. Brooklyn is a bit better — I think you would really like SEY :)

sjm··on Ultrasonic Coffee
NYC doesn't have the time or space for the kind of coffee culture you're talking about, but the coffee itself is as good as anywhere else — not Devocion though, that's pretty bad IMHO. SEY is where you wanna go, or Black Fox or maybe Saltwater if you're in Manhattan.
sjm··on Ultrasonic Coffee
London has good coffee, as well as NYC where I currently live. You just need to look for us Aussies behind the espresso machines :) Kiwis will do too.
sjm··on Ultrasonic Coffee
Good advice, but honestly given how complicated puck prep can be I'd suggest people struggling just go for turbo shots directly (coarse grinds, 1:2/1:2.5 ratio in 15 seconds or less, 6 bar if you can control it). It's much more repeatable which makes it easier to dial in by taste, and will get you much closer to reliably good espresso.
sjm··on Dear Europe, please wake up
These e/acc types are insufferable and if anything "SF" has been ruined by them. I know I'll get downvoted or flagged given this is HN, but there's more to life than startups and private equity[0]. Let's leave Europe alone, huh?

sjm··on LCD displays still don't match the responsiveness of clunky CRT screens (2019)
CRTs are still unmatched for gaming. Aside from input lag, they don't degrade low resolutions the same way that LCDs do. For the longest time I stuck with a 19" flatscreen 4:3 CRT that did 170Hz at 800x600, an absolute beast. As a kid I'd lug it around to QuakeWorld and Counter-Strike LAN tournaments.

I've gone through a bunch of high refresh rate LCDs since, but nothing has matched the perfect hand-eye sync of a CRT running at high FPS and high refresh rate with a 1000 Hz mouse, zooming around dm3 in a complete state of flow.

sjm··on LCD displays still don't match the responsiveness of clunky CRT screens (2019)
CRTs far exceed 60Hz though. This FW900 for example goes up to 160Hz.
sjm··on Redis is forked
Can someone ELI5 why I should feel bad about Redis charging massive companies like AWS and Google to use/sell/profit from their software? Am I really supposed to feel like Amazon is the good guy in this situation? As far as I can tell this change doesn't affect 99.999% of Redis users, but I understand I could be missing something?
sjm··on Fiber-optic data transfer speeds hit a rapid 301 Tbps
Does this mean anything for actual latency, or only bandwidth?

e.g. speed of light could mean a ~40ms ping between LA and Sydney, but best we get today is probably around 150ms?

sjm··on For Brilliant Color: Packaging the First LSD Blotter
LSD was recently granted "breakthrough-therapy status" by the FDA after clinical trials show a single dose provides "immediate and lasting relief" from generalized anxiety [0]. I know you're asking about a slightly different effect, but IMHO they are related. I myself have experienced personal revelations through psychedelics that have had lasting effects and positive consequences in my life.

My gut feeling is that any revelations or breakthroughs people have from psychedelics could also eventually occur through other means (therapy, meditation, etc.), but not as quick. It's like a shortcut to the sort of deep introspection needed to unwind the stories we have ingrained into ourselves.
