sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on eBay pays $3M fine in blogger harassment case
I feel like the GPS tracking device, fake Craigslist sex ads, and pig carcass are magnitudes worse than live spiders.

I actually like spiders as long as they are smaller than my palm (and nontoxic of course)

Insane story though - what did they think would happen

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Oh yea I totally agree with your comment (and the others in the chain in this vein)

It is extremely important (to me) to form some kind of relationship with the people I work with to stay motivated. It doesn’t have to be everyone and super close friendship - but that certainly helps if it comes naturally.

And yea businesses are like a form of “slow AI”. They will do what is necessary to survive even at the expense of the people who built them. And it is important to be mindful of that. But I can’t work with a Damocles sword hanging over me constantly. At some point I have to lie to myself and assume the business will also act in my interest if I do good work - even if it’s a naive and arguably stupid belief which has bitten me a couple times already. It wasn’t anyone’s “fault” or anyone acting with evil intent.

In the end I live after Juicy J’s eternal philosophy: “Everything is business Ain’t shit personal.”

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on The Internet Is Full of AI Dogshit
Love that sentiment! The Internet Archive is in many ways one of the best things online right now IMO. One of the few organisations that I donate regularly to without any second thoughts. Protect the archive at all costs!
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Honestly a very depressing outlook. If I would really think this way I wouldn’t wanna work in this industry. The only times I was really happy and motivated at work was when I was working within a team where we were really friends - I’m still in contact with most of them years after the fact and some became really close friends - this was outside of IT though.

Your line of thinking seems to be common in the IT industry and I wonder if it’s a good industry for me to be in long term. I only was at one company so far where we had a really close-knit team.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Does DNA have the equivalent of IF-statements, WHILE loops, or function calls?
On the other hand I would argue that evolutionary pressure works differently for modern humans in the 20th century and beyond than it did for the majority of human evolution.

Sure uneducated people now often have more kids due to less contraception options/knowledge and as old age insurance. But then again rich people have more kids than middle class because of well more money and everything that comes with it.

In any case all of this is anecdotal and emotion based because there is not much good data on this. Or maybe there is?

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on I pwned half of America's fast food chains simultaneously
Often when pointing out how people fell victim to a con they won’t thank the person who tells them about the con but rather attack them. Basically they can’t admit to being so stupid as to have bought into a con. On some level you can be happy they didn’t come after you or something.

I totally understand how you feel though.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Wikihouse: Open-Source Houses
There is a pretty cool project for a complete open source village: -https://www.opensourceecology.org/

Supposed to be all the machines you need to supply a whole village, made from low cost basic materials.

I think it’s from 2014 not sure if it’s still being worked on or if anyone actually has used the blueprints in a real world scenario.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on We are turning into subscription slaves (2023)
Hey dang, Apologies I missed your earlier warning… I see that this was the wrong approach and noisy. I’ll work a bit on steel manning my arguments for reform and write a blogpost instead and share it with HN after to focus the discussion, been spending a bit too much time to write these comments anywhere. Please unban me dang I won’t do it again ^^
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Bodycams for civilians
They keep claiming it because they don’t want to be recorded. It’s still legal to do it. Police are allowed to lie to you after all.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Google illegally refusing to bargain with employee union, says NLRB
In rough terms, negotiating in good faith means negotiating in a way that is likely to yield an agreement. Bad faith means just going through the motions for the sake of appearance, or even making moves to spoil the process.

IANAL

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on The Game Awards raises an old question: What does indie mean?
One thing is a giant corporation „promising“ something - the other thing is reality where the promises of corporations are exactly worth nothing and you can bet on them breaking it as soon as it’s convenient.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on "Anna's Archive" blocked following publishers' complaint
I'm not saying the futility of their efforts is the reason to change copyright law (although it should be possible to turn the argument your imagined lawyer comes up with around) - I’m saying what they are doing is futile, hurts more or less all of humanity AND copyright law is broken and does not serve its intended purpose anymore.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on We are turning into subscription slaves (2023)
Tangentially related but copyright is broken and needs urgent reform. It does not serve its intended purpose anymore and this is just one symptom of it.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on We are turning into subscription slaves (2023)
Good software doesn’t need constant updates or maintenance.

Personally I hate the culture of incremental updates, shipping halfbroken beta versions, bolting on security as last measure because who gives a fuck about dataleaks. Everyone trying to build an everything app and sucking up all the data they can get their hands on.

The sad thing is nowadays most software „engineers“ or product „managers“ can’t even imagine an alternative to this.

Write a program that does one thing well and you don’t need to constantly update it.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on "Anna's Archive" blocked following publishers' complaint
One mirror down in one country, meh.

We can play this game of whack-a-mole forever.

Copyright needs reform, this madness is wasting countless lifehours and holding back humanity as a whole. Copyright is broken and doesn’t fulfill its intended purpose anymore.

Great advice, thanks! I’ll try out some stuff let’s see how it goes.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Ask HN: Any felons successfully found IT work post-release?
Being upfront means stating it without being asked during the interview.

Of course lying is a very bad strategy. But so is coming out without being asked IMO.

I have no personal experience just from acquaintances.

I don’t know about time limits I guess that depends on the country. For example in Germany this kind of information is usually not public so you will have a much easier time - also with the penal systems goal to rehabilitate not to punish. Of course it’s still very difficult.

Unrelated but nice to see that my tonedeaf and somewhat rude comment sparked such an interesting conversation. I think I learned something reading this comment chain, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Couldn’t respond to others in this comment chain for some reason but fwiw I think politics in my country (Germany) are equally insane at times if not more so…

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
Unfortunately there is not much information for this online (atleast from a quick search I didn’t find much) Most seems to be related to working together with publishing houses (I loathe the German publishing houses so that’s definitely no option).

I would prefer working directly with an independent author - when I have a bit more time I’ll check out how to best get in contact with them.

Not sure about the legal side of it, but I have a friend who works in German copyright and who could probably help figure that part out.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
Do you think I could offer English->German translation services to indie authors as a reasonable side income?

Do you know a good place to get to know them or start out building some connections?

I have been doing it in the past (mostly for ads and other marketing content) but it paid very little (was working freelance for an agency) but I enjoyed it a lot.

sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on 50 Algorithms Every Programmer Should Know (Second Edition)
I may be a very grug-brained „junior programmer“ but I literally never had to implement an algorithm from scratch in a 5 year „career“. Neither did any of my colleagues, who are as a rule smarter and working on harder problems than me.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
You aren’t really able to implement them in real life anyway - just like any other form of DRM. If the device can show/play it you can capture it.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
All of the „benefits“ you listed are why I hate native apps with a passion and avoid installing them whenever possible. I don’t want your mindshare, notifications, spam and all the other bullshit no thanks
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
Anecdotal, Dominos has a website I can order food from and it’s insanely good experience to use it in basically all aspects I can think of. I love ordering food from them just because the experience is so good. The food is a different story, but man their UX is something everyone else could learn from.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
I think you definitely made the right decision. As a user and a developer I hate native apps with a passion, so I for one can’t wait for the browser supremacy to take off.
sjfjsjdjwvwvc··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024)
Fair enough. Would be a hard sell to spend 1/4 of my time away from family though.

If I may ask do you pay for the travel or do you get reimbursed by your employer?
