sjclemmy··on The startling 1960s theory that Stonehenge was a prehistoric computer
When my son and I drive to London, we pass Stonehenge and always play that song. We repeat that line many, many times.
sjclemmy··on Show HN: Lean bulk, cut, body recomp. Calculate maintenance calories
I like this, I’ve been tracking with MyFitnessPal. Would be great if I could import historical calories to see how it performs. Also note that tracking calories is hard - often it’s an estimate so quite hard to vary by the small amounts above and below the threshold needed for continued weight loss. Also losing weight is hard!
sjclemmy··on Iliad fragment found in Roman-era mummy
Worth mentioning Gene Wolfe’s superb Latro books (https://www.goodreads.com/series/49453-latro)

I think the premise for the books is that the story is found on ancient papyrus.

sjclemmy··on The Falkirk Wheel
Which reminds me of a weekend I took a few years ago where we drove to Edinburgh from Manchester on day 1 then up to Arisaig on day 2 to camp on the beach - then back to Edinburgh for a wedding on day 3 and then back to Arisaig the next day to continue the long weekend. Then full day drive back to Manchester.
sjclemmy··on Trillions spent and big software projects are still failing
The uk government development service as you call it is not a service. It’s more of a declaration of process that is adhered to across diverse departments and organisations that make up the government. It’s usually small teams that are responsible for exploring what a service is or needs and then implementing it. They are able to deliver decent services because they start small, design and user test iteratively and only when there is a really good understanding of what’s being delivered do they scale out. The technology is the easy bit.
sjclemmy··on Show HN: I made an esoteric programming language that's read like a spellbook
And now imagine the future where code is embedded in the world all around. No one knows it’s there, except… the magicians! They’re the only ones who managed to RTFM before it was lost in the mists of time…
sjclemmy··on The Sagrada Família takes its final shape
I have visited 2x - Once recently and it was very impressive. But I also climbed the towers in a thunder storm in 1990. Which was a terrifying experience. The stairs had about 50cm of stone balustrade on the inside which was not enough to feel safe. I was on my hands and knees by the very top. It was either real or vertigo but I swear I could feel the tower sway as the lightening and thunder crashed all around. A most treasured experience
sjclemmy··on Delta Engineered a Pricing System That Sorts You by Economic Value
Sounds like consumers need AI identities to help them get the best deals from this kind of thing.
sjclemmy··on Why Northern England is poor
I have never heard it referred to as North England. Northern England or the North of England yes. As a reluctant “northerner” it dunt sarnd reet.
sjclemmy··on Caloric Reflex Test
Just found out about this by looking into why I get dizzy when I swim crawl in the sea! The body is truly a complicated and wonderful thing.

sjclemmy··on Forced rhubarb, a vegetable deprived of sunlight, is having a renaissance (2019)
Slightly tangential but along the same lines. Worth a read, BlackBerry Wine by Joanne Harris. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackberry_Wine
sjclemmy··on Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time?
Totally agree with this. I do big corp work and the problem space is totally different from what is needed for a single developer.
sjclemmy··on A bug's life: Millimeter-tall mountains on neutron stars
I’m currently reading Flux. Brilliantly bonkers.
sjclemmy··on I am an object of internet ridicule, ask me anything (2013)
That chimes with my experience. Back in 2009 my (then) 9 year old son made a few stop frame lego movies and we posted them on YouTube. Some of the comments were really mean. I remember being surprised by the response but found it quite amusing. We still joke about our favourite comment: “You’re an embarrassment to the stop motion community”
sjclemmy··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
Fun fact and one of my dinner party anecdotes; I have the accepted answer for one of Ross Ulbricht’s (Silk Road’s Dread Pirate Roberts) SO questions that got him busted.

sjclemmy··on My failed music career
I’m a competent amateur guitarist and I feel your pain. Learning pieces so they are good enough to perform takes so much practice and I too get sick of them before I can play them adequately!
sjclemmy··on Dominic Cummings calls for 'weirdos and misfits' for No 10 jobs
So does Dominic Cummings read HN?
sjclemmy··on Dark Matter Developers: The Unseen 99% (2012)
I don’t think it’s about ability or interest. It’s about presence. There’s loads of developers out there with a range of skills. I work with devs who are great who you’ve never heard of and others who aren’t so great who you’ve never heard of. I’d consider myself in the 99%. I aspire to market myself but I’ve got lots of interests and I’m quite a private person so I find marketing myself in conflict with that aspect of my personality. But get me one to one and I’ll happily talk about my latest interest (which by the way is Directed Graphs).
sjclemmy··on Roads with protected bike lanes make both cycling and driving safer: study
Care to substantiate that?
sjclemmy··on Ask HN: What jobs can a software engineer take to tackle climate change?
Yeah, but how many?
sjclemmy··on Ask HN: What jobs can a software engineer take to tackle climate change?
I was thinking about this yesterday and came up with this question: How many trees would I have to plant, and how long would they have to live to offset my (average Western European) lifetime CO2 contribution?
sjclemmy··on Mariana Trench: Deepest-ever sub dive finds plastic bag
The best thing about this is that the vessels’ names are inspired by Iain M. Banks’s Culture novels.

sjclemmy··on GCHQ Cracks Frank Sidebottom's Codes
Forgive me but;

You know you are, you really are.

Bringing this back to the article - the context for candid feedback is a competent workforce. By your own admission it appears you we’re still in the process of learning about competence so the prof was not providing candid feedback of your submission but questioning your competence. That’s a different and necessarily more personal discussion!
sjclemmy··on Innovative Cultures
I think the point here is that your prof was criticising you rather than your output. That’s why it’s brutal, because it’s personal. He’s being honest about his feelings but it’s not very helpful to you. So I don’t think it’s fair.
sjclemmy··on Innovative Cultures
>> - psychological safety requires comfort with brutal candor

I would disagree with this. Candour and honesty do not have to be brutal to be effective in this context.

sjclemmy··on How Peter Jackson's team made World War I footage look new
For those with access to the BBC iPlayer, it’s available to watch at the moment.
sjclemmy··on Skirting U.S. sanctions, Europeans launch trade mechanism for Iran
Looking at his map[1], I think you are correct. He's in Kenya heading toward Sudan. Probably giving South Sudan [2] a wide birth though.

sjclemmy··on Ask HN: What to do after $8M (all cash, post tax) exit?
Indeed it is!

Also to add. If you can't work out the answer to that question then don't feel pressured into trying to force it.

It's ok not be able to answer the question. Life is a search for meaning. Sometimes it comes, sometimes it doesn't. The money in and of itself isn't going to answer the question. And in fact, freedom from the 'toil' required to make ends meet might remove some of the purpose that OP previously felt. But I think when faced with change and upheaval that removes the certainties of life (in this case 'work, eat sleep, repeat') you owe it to yourself to see if you can work out the answer.
