sixtofour··on Solutions for free via Job Interviews
Funny, I was imagining almost this exact same scenario the other day. I thought it would be a good way to see how well the interviewers collaborate. I suppose it depends on how honest everyone is about what's going on.
sixtofour··on Vim Text Objects : The Definitive Guide
Related, and more generally:

    :help object<CTRL-D>
    objects text-objects vimwiki-text-objects
    object-select sql-object-motions sql-predefined-objects
    object-motions text-objects-changed +textobjects
    :help object
shows all help subjects with "object" in their name.

Then change the help query to whichever subject looks interesting.

sixtofour··on Ubuntu and GNOME jump the shark
Yes you can, I used to have (G)ubuntu, KDE and XFCE installed simultaneously and switch between them. The problem I saw was that the menus got really crowded.

Once you settle on one, you maybe want to start over with a backup and a fresh install.

sixtofour··on Occupy George
I used to see decorated bills fairly regularly, back when I mostly used cash. I was never aware of them not being accepted; it never bothered me.

One of my favorites, on a $1 bill: "Taxes are revolting; why aren't you?"

sixtofour··on Occupy George
How many jobs do those 400 create? Who are they, actually? Are they generally captains of industry, steering the ship of employment? Or are they generally trustafarians, doing whatever?
sixtofour··on Amazon Signs Up Authors, Writing Publishers Out of Deal
Amazon was quoted in the article as saying that the only two important parties in publishing are the writer and the reader. Of course it was hard to understand that statement, blocked as it was by Amazon's foot in its mouth.
sixtofour··on Ubuntu and GNOME jump the shark
Any number of reasons to choose a particular distro, but let me lump them into "system administration style" and "GUI style."

If you still like or prefer Ubuntu's system administration style (apt, packages, PPA, whatever), and you're just horrified by the desktop, then use another desktop or window manager.

    - Lubuntu (LXDE on Ubuntu, similar to Xubuntu)
    - LXDE and OpenBox manually installed.
    - OpenBox by itself manually installed.
    - Xubuntu.
    - XFCE manually installed.
I went with Lubuntu, pretty happy with it. It's a little unfinished, but not terribly so. And I still have all the apty goodness that I enjoy in ubuntu.

Or go upstream to Debian, or downstream to Mint, or over a branch with Crunchbang. Or a stream over to an RPM based distro. Or over into the next valley with Arch, Slack, etc. Get some strange with FreeBSD.

If the mainstream Ubuntu desktop sucks for you (it does for me), then moving some small or large distance to fix it is going to be much easier than suffering day in and day out.

sixtofour··on Ask HN: Can we build a web dev school from free content?
This has been my experience with MIT OCW too. Or trying to figure out which textbook version applies to the course version that's online as opposed to the current registered class.

It's been awhile since I made an attempt, but at the time I thought it could use a little attention.

sixtofour··on Google Killing Off Buzz and Code Search
I probably agree with your first paragraph. That might be the inevitable consequence of big, or it might be too tight a focus on explicit shareholder value in the regulations, or ...

Your 2nd and 3rd paragraphs won't surprise me.

sixtofour··on Google Killing Off Buzz and Code Search
"What do you mean unmeasured resources?"

Ah, sorry, I had saurik's comment in mind when I wrote that.

"2) I don't think Google even tries to make things sustainable. During all of these "Google shuts down X" that have been happened recently, some posts here by ex-Google people indicated that Google internally didn't even have reporting on per-project costs... hopefully now that they see how much certain things cost they will cause less market-level problems going forward."

sixtofour··on Google Killing Off Buzz and Code Search
I believe as a public company, the only point of making a billion dollars is shareholder value, by law. Before they went public they could indulge their geek kink until they went blind.

I'm not saying Code Search doesn't (necessarily) contribute to shareholder value. But it sure has to be easier to make the case for something that can be measured, as opposed to "geek goodwill."

sixtofour··on Google Killing Off Buzz and Code Search
"You can't measure geek cred. You can't measure the second-order effect of services like Code Search."

And so as a publicly owned, regulated, billion dollar corporation, it no longer make sense to commit unmeasured resources to support unmeasurable benefits.

Thank you, DMR.

sixtofour··on University of California teachers’ union aims to block online classes
From Stanford's online, open to all database course announcement page (login required) from yesterday:

http://www.db-class.org/course/class/index

"As of this morning we have 68,000 students enrolled in Introduction to Databases, and the number is growing daily. Wow!! The reception has been way beyond expectations -- we're pedaling like mad to keep up, and having a great time. Please visit the Q&A Forum if you have questions, or if you have answers! With a class this size we're certainly relying on students-helping-students. Welcome aboard."

It seems there's demand.

sixtofour··on The 10 Mistakes I've made...so you don't have to
I clicked the first 2 or 3 slides, and did not see all ten mistakes listed at once. I am NOT going to click through 60 odd slides to see if it might be worth my time to click through 60 odd slides.

Probably decent advice in here, the comment is more on attracting views. Let me know it's worth it.

sixtofour··on Nginx, Inc. announces its Series A funding
I don't know when nginx.com/net came to be, but it's a much nicer site than nginx.org. Almost corporate looking.

Good luck to their team.

sixtofour··on Netflix kills Qwikster
Canceled both. I was on the streaming plus one DVD plan.

I was probably buying a different service than Netflix thought they were selling: All the streaming movies I can stand for about $10/month, with DVDs as backup if they aren't streamed.

As others have noted, neither service on its own is worth the price to me. Streaming quality is OK. DVDs are usually playable but not always. Once I start the DVD and settle in with my popcorn, a refund or the next movie can't make up for the disappointment and wasted time of a half watched movie.

I'm price sensitive these days, as are a lot of people. I'm going with the library, and the occasional PPV on Amazon or Youtube. I don't have to watch every new movie, and most of my viewing was classics, indie and foreign anyway.

sixtofour··on Ayende posts a job applicant's crappy code
It bugs me that the guy put up code as a bad example, and some of the lines extend so far to the right that the side bar lays on top of them. Its own bad example.
sixtofour··on Kickstarter being sued for patent infringment.
"you are against all forms of civil disobedience that cause harm?"

Mostly, but not absolutely. Unnecessarily exposing the existence and whereabouts of someone's kids for what amounts to little more than vandalism and tagging, yes.

sixtofour··on Kickstarter being sued for patent infringment.
"Surely that no collatoral innocents be harmed ever is too high a standard ..."

When we're talking about independent outlaw actors, as opposed to the law and justice that you invoke in your response, then no, I don't think it's too high a standard.

sixtofour··on Kickstarter being sued for patent infringment.
Personal details lead to personal relationships, which then can lead to innocents being hurt. Not cool.
sixtofour··on Dropbox is my publish button, too. (Nginx + Dropbox = easy publishing)
I can be convinced otherwise, but this doesn't seem to be within the spirit of my free agreement with Dropbox. It's as if I took my host's invitation to "make myself at home" literally, and ate all his ice cream while he was at work.

sixtofour··on Ask HN: Why are Macbook Pros so common in the developer/hacker community?
I bit the bullet and spent some time yesterday installing XFCE and fiddling with it. And now it feels solid to me again too (it was never really shaky, just irritating in my use case). Focus reliably follows whatever window I alt-tab to, and I'm happy again.

I actually don't care what DE or window manager I use, my computer is just a place to hold a browser, a terminal window, and some development tools. All I require is that it stay out of my way and not make me notice it.
