> I think most governments would find a way to put the kibosh to this entire operation before Bitcoin became some kind of default currency in the global sense for everyone (not just for its supporters).

Not sure if you're living under a rock, but Coinbase IPO is about to happen. You think they would kibosh anything after so many financial interests depend on BTC? I remind you that even Tesla already went in.

> what governments could do is prohibit exchanges from operating in their home countries

This is the typical FUD argument of government regulation, which everybody is scared about it but: 1) it never happens or 2) if it happens, it happens slowly in some odd countries here and there (which doesn't affect BTC at all unless all governments together decided to ban it, because right now if X country bans it, the other ones are seen as more tech-innovative, e.g. see Japan which is positioning itself as the hub of the future of DeFi).

> I'm sure the tax agency will get very suspicious about the massive windfall you got that you can't properly explain away.

Most people are using P2P & DEX exchanges more, so the surveillance possibilities are getting reduced. Note, I'm not advocating for tax evasion, everyone should pay their taxes, but actually having to pay capital gains deter people from selling, which makes actually the price to not go down (and after your BTC appreciates you can benefit from that without selling, e.g. borrowing against it, or buying small things with bitcoin here and there).

> Climate change being what it is, I would be shocked if governments don't start cracking down on this sooner.

BTC is not environmentally-unfriendly, this point has been long-debunked: see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25320652 (and even if it wasn't debunked, there are cryptocurrencies which don't have PoW: PoS or PoST don't use so much electricity).

> Bitcoin itself is extremely volatile,

This is because you're still measuring bitcoin's value in terms of fiat unit of account. If goods & services were already priced in bitcoin (something that might happen at some point), then what you would think is volatile is fiat currency. Not to mention that there have been studies already that forecast bitcoin's volatility to be going down over time and it will reach parity with normal currencies soon (e.g. https://medium.com/@silvestrimichela.s/is-btc-volatility-goi... )

> Then a select few run off with their bags of real money while the rest of us take the hit.

What you seem to be describing here, precisely, sounds like the Cantillon effect (which wouldn't happen in a bitcoin-based economy, actually).

siwatanejo··on Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme
This reaction sounds very analogous to me to when someone complains about what two consenting same-sex adults do in their bedroom.
siwatanejo··on Why Bitcoin Could Be Banned or Criminalized in the Coming Years
You're referring to something called "demurrage", which is the fair way to disincentivize saving. What the government(s) would do, though, is inflate the currency (print more tokens of it) so that your balance feels to stay "intact" (but the value of it isn't).

By the way, this is what happens today with the USD (or any fiat currency). It doesn't need to be "digital" (it already is).

Disagree, he's taking advantage of the freemium model which is probably giving him more chances of getting real users.

If you added an option to pay with bitcoin, I would pay the Premium tier :)

> it's not clear why money going to criminal organization is better than the government.

Don't put words in my mouth that I didn't say (or rather, typed). I never said it's better. Government&banks-robbing-all is a worthy cause to fight anytime, even if it doesn't directly help the criminals-robbing-a-few problem, because actually, the latter already happens today, and will always happen (sadly). So we must fix one thing at a time.

siwatanejo··on Bitcoin still makes no sense
> The second one is that it makes illegal activities easier, and at a larger scale. It's quite common right now for companies to be coerced pay millions of dollars to anonymous criminals, all enabled with cryptocurrencies.

For the vast majority of businesses/individuals, it is governments and banking cartels the ones stealing your money (via inflation and fractional reserve respectively) without recourse. Switching to a world in which, instead of all of us, but only a few, are stolen money, is a bit better.

> The most prominent negative effect is the huge energy waste, which doesn't help when we are trying to cut on our carbon footprint

siwatanejo··on Banks, QE, and Money-Printing
The point of that woman is simply: let the deficit go up ad infinitum (in USD value), it doesn't matter because as the central bank keeps printing money, the value of the deficit actually goes down (because the USD value goes down), so the value of the deficit is stable even if we don't perceive it to be this way.

Quite BS imo

siwatanejo··on Leaving OCaml
Ok sorry I might have misread it from somewhere[1], but I remember this talk: https://twitter.com/migueldeicaza/status/466209065698590720

[1] just looked at it again and while it doesn't default to mutability, it doesn't default to immutability either (i.e. to compare it with F#, it's 'val vs var' versus 'let vs let mutable', so the latter being much longer means the default/lazy thing to do by devs is immutability, in the F# case).

siwatanejo··on Leaving OCaml
Sounds like this is covered by F# already, simply by the use of genercs (similar to what you described for OOP, which in that particular case doesn't really have any OOP downsides, i.e.: no inheritance, no state).
siwatanejo··on Leaving OCaml

maybe you should give this one a try: https://github.com/rspeele/Rezoom.SQL

I would discourage you to try Scala, AFAIK it doesn't default to immutability.

This is the content that really gives me hope. I think Purism is doing great work. But somehow I can't stop thinking that they are too small, and that these companies striving for user privacy and user choice should unite to make the fight against the Duopoly (Apple&Google) easier. I hope one day we can see a curated AppStore, ruled by an alliance formed by companies like Purism (e.g. Huawei -> HarmonyOS, Samsung -> TizenOS), but which doesn't impose what to install (people can opt-out without jail-breaking, like described in the article).

> and no one is running nodes except for the company itself

What you're talking about doesn't seem to be an ICO but an IBO (Initial Blockchain Offering?). Most ICOs use a token on an already-established blockchain (e.g. ETH), so then there's no need to run a new network of nodes for it.

siwatanejo··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2020)
[still-unnamed startup in stealth mode] | REMOTE or ONSITE(around HK: Guangzhou,Macau,Shenzhen,Taiwan,etc) | 20-40h per week, freelancers/full-timers/part-timers

Sorry for the vague description but I can tell you more about the product we're building when you apply. Hopefully I can attract you in a sufficient way with our tech stack! (see below). [NOTE: this is not a pie-in-the-sky venture, you would be joining a team who has a 1.5+year-old working product, with prospects of new greenfield products built around the first.]

Job positions:

- Build engineer: you are a Linux-er who has some past experience building deb or rpm packages, are excited about reproducible builds, and are willing to learn (if you don't already know) new things such as snap or flatpak. gitlabCI and/or githubActions is a plus. (Might do some DevOps work after we come out of stealth mode as well; with Pulumi and RedHat's OpenShift.)

- C#/.NET developer: generics, LINQ, VisualStudio, EntityFramework et al are your bread and butter. You value the diversity that comes from learning other languages and tech-stacks but also the stability that a robust platform like .NET provides, which you based your career on. Desirable to be familiar with Xamarin, but not required. F# is a plus.

- Rust developer: you dealt with C/C++/Objective-C in the past but are ready to move on. However, you're still not convinced about garbage collected languages, so you have been looking at Rust lately, or willing to learn it. You're not a smart-ass though, so you would be excited to expose your Rust code's API to be consumed by higher level languages.

- FP developer: you value immutability and lack of side effects because you have lived the nightmares of race conditions and heisenbugs in your career. You're disgusted with most job positions out there because the tech-stack described in most of them don't look safe enough to be serious (sure they can build snapchats with them, but not robust software that would end up being used by NASA or Waymo). Desirable to be familiar with F#.

- Desktop/mobile developer: you cringe at the idea of "Electron apps", because you think native frameworks like QT or gtk+ give much power and maintainability (plus, performance aside, javascript is a joke in any other aspect too). But you also understand why garbage-collected languages are safer and more productive than low-level ones, and there are many of these much more decent than JS. (gtk is preferred for this position at the moment; or someone willing to switch)

- SmartContracts/blockchain developer: you've used/developed smart contracts in languages such as Ivy, MiniScript, or Solidity(EVM), or are willing to learn this technology. Desirable to have familiarity with atomic swaps, HTLCs or zero knowledge proofs. Excited about things like bitcoin-lightning, ethereum, mimblewimble/grin, DAI, etc

- Browser-extension developer: you would be interested in diving into the world of WebAssembly to create a similar opensource plugin like the UI of MetaMask (ideally this work should be compatible with Brave, Chrome/Chromium, and Firefox).

Important perk for all positions: all the code/scripts you'll write (being paid of course) will be opensource, at least for the first 2months.

Write me at andrew.forsure@gmail.com

PS: Abstain from applying if you expect a lead/managerial role, because the team is not yet big enough to need extra leadership for now.

PS II: In case you're only interested in joining part-time, note: I wouldn't find it acceptable if you join us to work remotely part-time while keeping your full-time job. Part-time only works in parallel with: a) your own side-projects, or b) other additional part-time job (because resting is important).
