sithlord··on SVB depositors, investors tried to pull $42B Thursday
would be interested in knowing if the us gov just buys the assets, since at the end of the day, (longer term) there seems to be a pretty good guarantee of getting it all back (minus time value of money)
sithlord··on Meetings *are* the work
> The work is the stuff that actually generates income.

none of the above generates income, meetings or otherwise.

sithlord··on Meetings *are* the work
So, all these people dont do work...

Accounting, HR, Marketing, etc

These are cost centers, they don't generate income.

sithlord··on Apple Makes Major Progress on No-Prick Blood Glucose Tracking for Its Watch
no, not anywhere close, they are all inserted, and disposable.
sithlord··on Gmail spam is out of control
i have been getting a lot of gmail spam recently also, and they all come from .gmail accounts too. its turned into a bunch of things from like

a.b.person.s.s.s@gmail.com,

person.a.b.s.s.s.s.s@gmail.com,

...

sithlord··on Tell HN: DigitalOcean is doing layoffs
because if people don't have extra money to buy things, then merchandisers are forced to lower price to a point where people are willing to buy it.

it's supply and demand, Feds can't really impact supply - but they can impact the demand of it

sithlord··on Pre-seed, seed startups with employees in office have higher revenue growth
small sample, and a single VC portfolio? Could also be selection bias in who they want to fund.
sithlord··on Why the conventional wisdom on how to grow muscles is wrong
most sane bodybuilding programs, ie training for mass not so much strength, almost all center around 8-12 reps for 99% of exercises. Sometimes you might get to a 4 or 6 rep set if you start approaching closer to max, but generally its about how much weight you can maintain for that many reps, aka time under tension.
sithlord··on Ask HN: What to do when someone clones your site?
>The truth is if you can be cloned with ease, than the product likely falls squarely in the low-hanging-fruit category. Thus, as a business model it is unsustainable.

if its a SaaS, they are likely talking about the marketing site - not the logged in experience.

sithlord··on GIMP's 2022 Annual Report
Do they have another report where they talk about how all the money that is donated gets distributed?
sithlord··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
at least in the tech side of things, they decided to hire the same type of person, uncreatives who memorize leetcode questions and have no ability to think outside of that box.

memorize leetcode, regurgitate memorize system design, regurgitate.

There are no room for creatives with that process.

sithlord··on An unexpected benefit of unit tests
its a good idea to push code before signing off, what if you get sick and someone needs to pick it up, or your computer dies. A small broken test can be fixed likely faster than reinventing the whole thing again.
sithlord··on Carta lays off 10% of the workforce
2.5 months severance is pretty low compared to the other layoffs that have happened recently.
sithlord··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
My opinion is that Tesla wanted to be a tech company, wanted to lead the game with autopilot and other tech features, and eventually stop making cars and license out the tech. Turns out, its not that "hard" to get to the point they are at
sithlord··on Sherlock Holmes will finally escape copyright this weekend
They try and defend that thing crazy too, I believe deamau5 got in quite the legal battle with his mouse helmet.
sithlord··on Google admits to violating federal law and plans to keep doing it
So you don't really care about others, just yourself. A class action, could gain you near nothing but cost Google millions, or you could gain 10k and google could lose 10k.
sithlord··on Twitter 2.0: Our continued commitment to the public conversation
what is not scientific about it? maybe its not good science, but it is science. really almost anything is science...

Science is just observation and experimentation.

Science doesn't dictate how you do the above. Now, someone would find it impossible to reproduce your findings, but - that would just suggest bad science

sithlord··on Hard Reset
why are we still referring to Twitter and Meta as startups?
sithlord··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
To be fair, to "lose" billions of dollars. Really means putting that money into the economy without any immediate return. Which kinda sounds like a good thing?
sithlord··on Ask HN: How would you design an alternative Twitter
Less about the tech, I think basically anything would work. I think from the start I would go with 300 characters, and allow edit with a button that has an audit log of all edits.

I think a nice approach would be to be mobile first on my end, ios/android app and expose a nice api for people to build their own frontends. The only downside of that is how do you keep a popular frontend from hijacking someones tweets and modifying the text.

What I do not have an answer for is, how do you handle the comments, to me, they are generally more interesting than the tweet itself, so how does one get those front and center.

sithlord··on I finally found a use case for my Raspberry Pi Model B+
I think i could find a lot of use cases, unfortunately what I cannot find, is a Raspberry Pi itself... :(
sithlord··on NYC to require salary ranges be included in job postings
I saw a posting the other day that had something like, applicable only in Colorado the range is 150,000 - 200,000 - 250,000.

A range with 3 numbers is new to me.

sithlord··on Replit's in-browser coding AI
any interns on that team who are going to get bullied by replits lawyers in the near future?
sithlord··on Events: Fat or Thin?
I'm a fan of fat events, and let the receiver decide if they want to trust the event or not, or go ahead and make a call to the service to get the data.

for example:

if one receiver wants to know if you have read a book, then there is no reason to make a call to the service.

but if a service wants to know the last book you read, and doesn't trust the events to be in order, then it would make sense to just call the service.

sithlord··on Shutterstock will start selling AI-generated stock imagery
the difference is, its not even remotely easy to snap a photo even halfway decent stock photo of an office space with random people, especially with so many people not working from home.

it's pretty easy to tell some generative software to "Female giving a presentation in a well lit office with windows open" and get something pretty decent.

This goes for anything that needs props that a normal person doesn't have.

sithlord··on Poll: Is there a negative stigma toward articles written in Medium?
That's like saying you can't take a doctors advice seriously unless you are in the room at the doctor office.

Elitism at its best.

I mean how dare someone focus on writing and not on maintaining.

sithlord··on Show HN: I built a site that finds the cheapest place to buy a book
the title states cheapest place to buy a book, not the cheapesst way to acquire a book...
sithlord··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
is that any different than going to Disney World and having coke products shoved in your face?
sithlord··on Gitlab and remote work
Thats certainly a self-proclaimed title.
sithlord··on About Last Week’s Announcement
It's always hilarious to see these blogs from companies who are trying to save face. Literally no one would be wise to use Brex at this point. What are you going to do next, change it to 750k in cash - because 500k isn't your definition of a startup or a scaled company anymore?

What happens if my annual revenue drops from 1 million to 990k, is there some leeway there? where does the leeway stop?

The more concerning one is this:

>Tech startups who are on a path to meeting the criteria above, and are referred by an existing customer or partner.

So - is this your way of saying, if we have a well established company and they recommend there company they invested in, you are going to hold onto them even if they are no where close to the "criteria" because you are scared you'll scare off your whale of a customer? .....i mean at least you very willingly admit to nepotism.
