simpleintheory··on The browser's main thread is expensive
I made a project a while back to port Minecraft's desktop version to the web and it runs decently-ish on a good computer with WebGPU (but takes a really long time to load)

They're already doing this under the name "fast answers"

simpleintheory··on GenCAD
Yeah, TIL, turns out they changed the license: it used to be under https://fonts.google.com/license/productsans
simpleintheory··on GenCAD
Is this Google-affiliated? The heading font is Product/Google Sans which IIRC only Alphabet is allowed to use and the entire webpage seems to be Google-style but neither of the two named researchers seem to be employed by Google?
simpleintheory··on Batteries Not Included, or Required, for These Smart Home Sensors
Are you sure it wasn’t one of these? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito
simpleintheory··on Google suspended my company's Google cloud account for the third time
I'm not sure whether to be amused or annoyed by this comment (generated in the style of ChatGPT).
simpleintheory··on Apple rumored to be working on a smart home operating system version
It’s supported for iPads, just locked by software [1].

simpleintheory··on ChatGPT-5 Can't Do Basic Math
Can confirm this is happening with the same prompt -- it even tries to justify that 5.9 is less than 5.11 when asked further.

simpleintheory··on Running GPT-OSS-120B at 500 tokens per second on Nvidia GPUs
That’s because it’s intended as a workstation GPU not one used in servers
simpleintheory··on TSMC says employees tried to steal trade secrets on iPhone 18 chip process
The original link from Nikkei Asia that the 9to5mac article is a repost of has some more information and less generic filler:

simpleintheory··on Next stop: Miami
I think the most interesting part is that the article says that Waymo's handing its operations to Moove. It seems like Waymo's trying to become a software provider while having other companies handle the capital-intensive parts.
simpleintheory··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive – Battery and Speakers
Not totally related, but I definitely noticed Apple’s laptop speakers tend to sound ever so slightly better than other built-in speakers. I remember hearing about there being a patent causing this, but can’t find a source.
simpleintheory··on News from WWDC23: WebKit Features in Safari 17 Beta
That’s on Mac. PWAs on Mac aren’t a new capability since Chrome et al have had it for a long time. I’d be more interested if they improved iOS PWA capabilities
simpleintheory··on Asus UK PR believes it is ‘legal to buy positive reviews’
Did you mean Pegatron?
simpleintheory··on Ask HN: Is open source less tolerant / open to beginners now?
I think it’s moreso that the more developed any one project is, the fewer low hanging fruits there are to pick, so there’s less beginner tasks to do. That being said, there are still new projects springing up every day, but we just don’t know which of them will be the next Linux or Python.

I think he means the mega/gigapack.
simpleintheory··on Wilson's 3D-printed basketball is full of holes but never goes flat
That’s called an SLS machine and is way more expensive than household FDM (filament) and SLA (resin) printers.

I'm pretty sure EarthCam does this daily.

simpleintheory··on Ask HN: What's the current best domain host?
The issue is that ICANN already wants the $8/year cost, so if they’re to make any margin at all…
simpleintheory··on Announcement: AI generated answers are officially banned here
Was this comment generated via ChatGPT? It sounds oddly like it for some reason.
simpleintheory··on Was Rocket Lake Power Efficient?
Off-topic, but why do we still use nm to refer to things? I assume everyone on here is already aware that it's purely a marketing term, but we still use it.
simpleintheory··on Pi Cluster vs. Ampere Altra Max 128-Core ARM CPU
One of the big issues I have with ARM CPUs right now is that you can’t really purchase them anywhere as a consumer. They consolidate everything into the hands of a few major players, while hobbyists are relegated to sticking with x86. I wonder if RISC-V is going to fix that.
simpleintheory··on Picolibc: C library designed for embedded 32- and 64- bit systems
I wonder why detaching forks is so clumsy a process. Is it really storage space concerns, or is it something we don’t know about?
simpleintheory··on Language models are nearly AGIs but we don't notice
Part of the issue is that we don’t really understand consciousness in humans. I think that’s needed before we can actually see what’s happening with AI. This article reminds me of that Google engineer that called LaMDA sentient.
simpleintheory··on Forking Chrome to turn HTML into SVG
Interesting. Wonder how easily it would be to generalise this—turn into an API that gives out some image data that could be in turn converted to PDF, SVG, PNG, you name it… though not sure how the data would be structured though
simpleintheory··on Aftermarket Horns on Amazon Are Getting Out of Hand
I think it's because human perception of sound isn't linear, so it purports to more closely match human perception rather than actual amplitude
