simplecomplex··on The U.S. Forgot What Antitrust Is For
> Their supposed offense? Agreeing with one another, and with the state of California, to develop vehicles that are more fuel-efficient and have lower emissions than federal standards require.

Sounds like collusion and price fixing, which are anti-competitive behaviors covered by antitrust legislation.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too!

In a free market there would be nothing wrong with companies forming an agreement to compete, but antitrust law sees that as a cartel. Even if the cartel is selling electric vehicles.

simplecomplex··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
Speak for yourself. I am no less qualified than my elected reps. You don’t know what’s best for me.

Don’t like voting on the laws that govern you? Then don’t vote.

simplecomplex··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
I have. If someone can’t save a few hundred bucks a month something is wrong.

Let’s use Dallas TX for example, even just waiting on tables you can make at least twice rent. Forgo a car and you’d be able to pocket $500 / mo or more if one was frugal.

It’s even more critical to save when at the bottom of the economic ladder, because it allows one freedom to pursue or invest in other opportunities (paying for school, moving, weathering unemployment, etc.)

simplecomplex··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
If your living expenses are truly exactly your income then you need to move. You’re either making really little or living in an expensive area.

If you were in say Dallas TX for example and you waited on tables for $14 / hour you would be making double the rent.

You’ve got to have a plan.

simplecomplex··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
You’re not responsible for your generation, just yourself.

You didn’t answer my question about savings. Are you saving? If not you can and you should.

If you don’t have savings the first step is to come up with a budget. Send me an email if you need help it’s in my profile.

simplecomplex··on What College Admissions Want
Many middle-class parents spend $100k putting their child through college (tuition + rent).

Instead, they could use that money for a down payment on a rental. Their kid then learns to code (or whatever) for free while having a place to live and cash flow from an asset.

simplecomplex··on What College Admissions Want
College is a scam. Just take the money and buy real estate, and learn a trade online for free.
simplecomplex··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
Do you have savings? If you had enough saved to spend a year looking for another job, would you still live in fear?
simplecomplex··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
Save some money, then you don’t need to fear losing your job. Fear of losing your job is a result of poor personal finances.

There’s no need to fear if you have your personal finances in order.

simplecomplex··on Michael Bloomberg launches $160M initiative to ban flavored e-cigarettes
Bloomberg can ban ecig juice if we can ban him from eating fried chicken and Cheez—its:

“The New York Times reports that even as the mayor implements one city-wide dietary restriction after another, he continues to indulge. He loves burnt bacon and peanut butter sandwiches, hot dogs, fried chicken, and Cheez-its. He puts so much salt on his bagels “that it’s like a pretzel,” and so much salt on popcorn “that it burns others’ lips.”

Why am I not surprised?

simplecomplex··on Stripe Corporate Card
Stripe was first to market with a simple payments API. It established their brand. But I don’t think anything else they’ve done is different than the status quo. Getting a credit card, loan, or incorporated is more or less the same at Stripe vs elsewhere.
simplecomplex··on 50 U.S. states and territories announce broad antitrust investigation of Google
What is the suspected antitrust violation?

> Their concerns ran from the way Google processes and ranks search results to the extent to which it protects users’ personal information.

Ranking search results isn't anti-competitive and protecting user information isn't relevant to antitrust. Ranking search results is the service a search engine provides. Google doesn't stop other search engines from competing in the search space.

simplecomplex··on Most Americans see catastrophic weather events worsening
1 in 4 Americans think the sun orbits the earth. More Americans can identify the Three Stooges than the three branches of government. Almost half of Americans don’t believe in evolution.

What most Americans believe doesn’t hold much weight.

simplecomplex··on Information gerrymandering in social networks skews collective decision-making
The great thing about game theory is it’s whatever you want it to be!

“In Stewart and colleagues’ model, gridlock is assumed to be both likely and undesirable. It is unclear whether these assumptions apply in larger-scale decision processes such as national elections — in which gridlock is either extremely unlikely or impossible. ”

So the entire theory is based on something that we observe does not happen and has no corollary in realty (voter gridlock) Okay....

simplecomplex··on How China is Cashing in on Group Chats
They could be losing money on 1.4 billion in transactions. Their super low transaction fees might indicate WeChat Pay is a loss leader.

That’s my point. Tencent intentionally hides WeChat in their financials. You assume it’s wildly profitable because Tencent is. Usually when a company tries to hide the financial narrative of a product it’s not because it’s doing great.

“We consider payment at this point in time as to [sic] infrastructure service rather than a service that generates profit for us. And I think that status will maintain for quite some time,” Martin Lau

simplecomplex··on How China is Cashing in on Group Chats
WeChat is a financial disaster for all we know. Tencent doesn’t share any financials. Internet chat has always been hugely popular. Building a profitable business out of Internet chat has not been so easy historically. Historically, successful free chat software have been loss leaders (FB messenger for FB, yahoo messenger, AIM for AOL). Snapchat has never made money. LINE is the only chat app I know of to really turn a profit from just their app, and it has come at the expense of active users and squeezing more advertising into the app.

Odd title “cashing in” considering there’s no talk of the business behind WeChat...

simplecomplex··on 'Co-living': the end of urban loneliness or cynical corporate dormitories?
I’m sick of the political opinion pieces disguised as news that amount to nothing more than “capitalism bad corporations evil” now dominating HN. Mostly NYT and Gaurdian articles.

We can’t just have an article about co-living... Ugh.

simplecomplex··on Whole Foods CEO on plant-based meat: good for the environment, not for health
Uhh nowhere in the article does the CEO say that.

He says:

> “I don’t think eating highly processed foods is healthy. I think people thrive on eating whole foods,” Mackey says. “As for health, I will not endorse that, and that is about as big of criticism that I will do in public.”

simplecomplex··on Ask HN: Time Taken to Release a Feature
Either two weeks or six weeks, for small and large batches.
simplecomplex··on Netherlands played crucial role in infecting Iran with the Stuxnet virus
Bingo. Things like stuxnet are exceptions that prove the rule.

The US has been largely alone in dealing with China and the Middle East. We’ve been alone fighting the worlds autocratic regimes lately. Where we have support we’ve had to push for it.

simplecomplex··on Netherlands played crucial role in infecting Iran with the Stuxnet virus
They still are. But the US is getting a bit tired of doing all the work for the rest of the West.
simplecomplex··on Thought experiment: what would an AGI jury do?
Nothing, considering the link you posted is not about a jury decision, but a decision by appellate court judges.

simplecomplex··on Ask HN: I’m scared of losing GMail access. Do email protection laws exist?
Don’t use google. Use fastmail and use the backups. Problem solved.
simplecomplex··on Ask HN: What type of restrictions does your employer have on side gigs?
> Got an official opinion from legal that employer programs, working on a videogame mod is programming

Don’t trust anything the company lawyer says. They work for the company, not you. They will lie to you to protect the company.

“Everything you do is property of company” has never held up in court and is just legal bullying. If you’re not actually stealing company IP and using it at a competitor it’s all BS.

video game mods? Unless the company is a video game studio that’s a croc of shit.

simplecomplex··on Ask HN: What type of restrictions does your employer have on side gigs?
Why would you disclose it? Why would you ever tell an employer what you do on your own time? Work two jobs, three jobs, whatever. You’re not a slave.

You’ve let people bully and manipulate you if you’re worried about what your employer will think.

simplecomplex··on Four-in-one pill prevents third of heart problems: study
In adults, the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is excess weight and obesity. That is a fact. If you’re very overweight and have sleep apnea, losing weight isn’t a crazy suggestion. If you’re skinny it obviously doesn’t make sense.

This isn’t about sleep apnea, but heart disease and stroke from high cholesterol and blood pressure, both of which diet and exercise are the leading cause.

Poor diet alone is linked to half of heart attacks and strokes. Poor diet and exercise has a large negative impact on health. It’s not some made up conspiracy to shame people.

simplecomplex··on Four-in-one pill prevents third of heart problems: study
Because on HN stating anything obvious that might offend someone is against the rules. HN prefers mindless optimism over snark.

If I had said “great development, [something about how clinical trials need to be disrupted], [summary of article]” I would be upvoted.
