simonjgreen··on Saving another 100TB of RAM
My intuition around larger companies is they are already impenetrable silos, and AI makes it worse
simonjgreen··on Canto: A speech model built for the real world
Congrats Wisprflow, love to see this. Especially learning the users nuances and corrections, i think that may be novel in the dictation app space. Things like Handy have the ability to specify common typos but some method of automatic learning is new.

This is a pretty hot space right now. For me, it's all incredible for two things:

- I get my unabridged thoughts down on the page substantially quicker and cleaner using dictation. I believe dictation is the perfect first draft tool, and an amazing way to interact with AI too as you can dump tonnes of personal opinion in to every prompt without the overhead of keyboard interface.

- Accessibility! I know a couple of folks whos ability to use a computer has been tremendously elevated by the recent improvements in dictation. Due to mobility issues, they feel largely locked out of interacting online and tools like Handy and Wisprflow have been a game changer for them.

Very excited about all this, keep it coming!

I've been leveraging Birdnet-2.4 as well, but also ultrasonic-pass and activity-v1 to do broader detection with an ecological targeted microphone. This means I can capture not just bird sounds but also bats and some insects, and acoustic events such as jets and cars.

Applying heterodyne transformations to the bat recordings makes them audible which is fascinating, especially when you catch them in a feeding frenzy.

Similar intent with an indoor display, although nowhere near as beautiful as OPs eink display here. I'm more aiming for a real-time ticker, but this design is wonderful. I'm quite inspired by it!

I've been working on this in the background for a few months, if anyone is interested repo with screenshots is here: https://github.com/simonjgreen/OpenObservatory

I’m pretty sure this way they’ve hardcoded the NTPs is actually against the ToS for use of the NTP pool too.

The way a vendor embedding NTP is _meant_ to do so is documented here: https://www.ntppool.org/en/vendors.html

On another note, back when I ran a web hosting business we hosted a few NTP servers in the pool. It’s such a simple thing to give back, and worth anyone who can make a stable contribution doing so.

That’s a shame, because FreeSewing is a fascinating and pretty awesome project! If you know someone in to the textile crafts, you may find this changes their world if they don’t already know of it.

Publish 124 released last week. Quite incredible that the game is still undergoing development and new content. Admittedly it has changed hands several times, and the Richard Garriot days are a distant memory now, but still!

I used to operate one of the more popular player run shards, after the peak of the mainstream game, and even that feels like a distant memory.

simonjgreen··on I turned my security cameras into an automatic bird identification system
Love your eink example! You’ve just sent me on a parts shopping trip :)

I’ve been unhappy with my little lcd board I’ve been using for the same here https://github.com/simonjgreen/OpenObservatory as the contrast is bad. I was considering using one of my trmnl displays, but it isn’t quite the right operating model for the frequency of updates I want.

simonjgreen··on I turned my security cameras into an automatic bird identification system
I’ve been working on a similar project for the last few weeks in spare time.

I’m using a AudioMoth USB mic so I can capture extremely high sample rate and also ultrasonic for bat detections.

Disclaimer: I’m also using this to see how far I can push supervised pure AI coding before it turns to mega slop, so know that before you dive in with the disparaging comments :D

simonjgreen··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
Current delivery and longevity still put C and D cells over AAs, that’s the main reason they are/were common in doorbells. And while 18650s would be equivalent to a C, they would require a charger most people don’t own already, as well as the usual liion safety issues. I’ve heard horrors of folks putting 18650s in to nimh chargers with sprung terminals :/

As for availability, they are certainly very obtainable where I am in UK. Shops and Amazon etc have them.

simonjgreen··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
Missing from here is the marketing position. Claude _very_ rapidly gained traction in the business/enterprise space earlier this year with Claude Cowork leading that drive. So successful it was, it lead to Microsoft licensing the Claude Cowork IP and white labelling it as Copilot Cowork (has anything like that ever happened before?!). ChatGPT Work was, imo, largely driven by a panic at OpenAI that they were haemorrhaging market intrigue and LinkedIn zeitgeist and headspace to Anthropic. ChatGPT had been the de facto, almost the Generic Trademark in business, and they got comfortable. Claude Cowork was eating their lunch. The way Anthropic targeted finance teams, legal teams, sales teams, with their positioning was absolute product marketing genius.

ChatGPT Work is trying to reclaim some of that magic that Claude Cowork affords its users that is so hard to explain succinctly.

Couldn’t agree more. This is practically mandatory on a Framework.

Noting too, I didn’t find my profile for Framework 13 to be optimal for Framework 13 Pro. I’m still tweaking there, and frustratingly didn’t track my tweaks, but will try to remember to diff at the end and publish the output.

simonjgreen··on Migrating a Synology NAS to a UniFi UNAS Pro 8 with Robocopy, SMB Multichannel
Basing your major infrastructure choices on Ubiquiti feels a kickstarter purchase every time. Huge claims, borderline religious following community, an intentional and almost proud absence of technical support, and a coin toss if the product line will still exist in 24 months.

And when they work as advertised they are fantastic.

simonjgreen··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
Our automated CVE testing harness is now powered by Claude after we got the approval. (For interest, we’re using VVAH https://github.com/visa/visa-vulnerability-agentic-harness )
simonjgreen··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
I was definitely taught this in those terms and at that age.

Perhaps the unexpected response comes from its recall ability. It’s not the personality of a child, just the material a child is exposed to.

simonjgreen··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
We applied for the cybersecurity approval via the form and got approval back in less than an hour. Have you… tried?
simonjgreen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Oh good point, I’ve added a section to the README. Thanks!

simonjgreen··on The tragedy of the commons, AI edition
Again, this is covered, to an extent. Speaking only for England & Wales, the courts have pretty broad costs powers. Especially if one party is bringing litigation unreasonably. There’s no ceiling to it either, it just has to be defensible.

It’s also on the court system to leverage procedure correctly to add safeguards against the kind of behaviour you describe.

I understand anecdotally the US system is more open to abuse of this nature, but I don’t know the details. This article though was specific to UK.

simonjgreen··on The tragedy of the commons, AI edition
This is a thing, and in the context of the article too. In UK, if an employment tribunal finds you’ve wasted the tribunals time they can and do order costs paid for both the tribunal and other party. Odd they don’t mention it.
simonjgreen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I’ve been hacking on an outdoor sound monitor for 24x7 logging of birds and bats around my house the last couple of weeks with a live indoor monitor: https://github.com/simonjgreen/OpenObservatory

And today I knocked out an improved trmnl plugin for Japanese flash cards at my wife’s request as she liked the native one from trmnl but it lacked furigana https://github.com/simonjgreen/trmnl-japanese-vocab

Note: I let AI do the vast bulk of the work on both counts, and I ideated, architected, and bug fixed. I do love AI coding hobby projects though, when you have an idea for a thing and know exactly how to put it together but don’t have the time to raw dog the whole thing.

simonjgreen··on Show HN: We Fixed UniFi's Slow PPPoE Performance with PPPoE Half-Bridge

simonjgreen··on AI Mania: From Tulips to Tokens
“You ingested the vast majority of available human knowledge to build your product, and intend to change the entire world with it, and in fact are doing so incredibly rapidly at a rate that dodges scrutiny. Could we know more?” Would be the expanded version I guess
simonjgreen··on AI Mania: From Tulips to Tokens
the metaverse went from being about owning your identity and digital possessions to mostly being about buying jpegs. once collectibles and nft speculation became the headline, it was hard to explain why any of the underlying technology mattered. after that, most people just associated the whole thing with speculation rather than the original vision.

which is a shame, I still feel like VR is full of untapped potential

simonjgreen··on AI Mania: From Tulips to Tokens
It is confusing. But I enjoyed the read, it’s refreshing to read a string of rants from a human rather than something perfectly polished by Opus.
simonjgreen··on Authorize, don't authenticate
They didn’t call it a mnemonic. They are suggesting recalling a movie scene to remember AAA. And imo, it’s a great one that I’ll be reusing to help others remember! I have to remind folks of the difference frequently at work.
