simfree··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Firefox has an implementation of WebGPU, why is Safari missing in action?
simfree··on Apple introduces M4 chip
WebGPU and many other features on iOS are unimplemented or implemented in half-assed or downright broken ways.

These features work on all the modern desktop browsers and on Android tho!

simfree··on YouTube's Legal Team sent me a letter [video]
Scroll down the page please and note the prior F-Droid release was Version 0.25.2 (994) - Added on Aug 10, 2023

All of the v26 releases are missing. F-Droid's maintainers just did not build or publish these, leaving F-Droid users with a broken app since early December 2023 until 2 weeks ago, basically 5 months of shipping an app that did not consistently work.

simfree··on YouTube's Legal Team sent me a letter [video]
Just look at how out of date NewPipe is in F-Droid, it's maintainer just isn't motivated to get new versions of the app building on F-Droid's servers, leaving end users with a half year out of date client that is unreliable to use.
simfree··on Two giants in the satellite telecom industry join forces to counter Starlink
Dish and DirecTV are rapidly bleeding customers, the latter is not planning to launch any new birds for this dying business. It might only be a decade before this industry consolidates further into the remaining satellites, with some large providers going extinct entirely.
simfree··on Mongoose IM 6.2.1 – Erlang Solutions robust, scalable and efficient XMPP server
Jmp.chat aka https://www.reddit.com/r/sopranica/ has built a whole business around xmpp for privacy, and it seems like there's often new XEPs adding features to the ecosystem.

Matrix has way better marketing, but XMPP just works (and has been working well for over a decade).

simfree··on Hertz is ditching even more electric cars
350kw chargers can take you from low to fairly full in 10 minutes.

Level 2 chargers that generally push 6kw of power and take hours to fully charge a car aren't very useful for brief charging stops like this.

simfree··on Samsung shifts executives to six-day workweeks to 'inject a sense of crisis'
It's all about monetary policy, Japan is also affected by this as their interest rates are out of sync with North America, pushing people to leave the local currency to pursue higher interest rates in US Dollars.
simfree··on Samsung shifts executives to six-day workweeks to 'inject a sense of crisis'
A small country that effectively operates as an island with angry nuclear-armed neighbors and no natural resources has figured out how to survive in the world through the skills nurtured within its own people.

South Korea doesn't have the privileges that Canada and Finland both have of friendly adjacent neighbors and natural resources, which provide opportunities when Nortel and Nokia respectively stopped succeeding in the marketplace.

That being said, there have been terrible knock-on effects from this societal policy. Brutal work culture, low birth rates and much more.

simfree··on Inside Amazon’s Secret Operation to Gather Intel on Rivals
Only the businesses that did sufficent volume and had sufficient margins to cover the ever increasing cost of rent, loss of products due to theft, and vandalism have stayed open.

The retail shakeout has been brutal in the urban core of Portland and Seattle as well, anywhere where there isn't nearby housing to create a walk shed that would allow smaller businesses to survive has seen something of a retail apocalypse.

Single purpose office or commercial neighborhoods just aren't viable anymore, you need a critical mass of local customers adjacent your retail business for it to survive.

With a battery, you could run your generator at peak efficiency when it's running, and idle it otherwise, significantly reducing your running costs.

simfree··on SFMTA's train system running on floppy disks; city fears 'catastrophic failure'
The current engineering ecosystem is largely private, and it's poorly functioning, costing us way more money than just hiring engineers as public employees rather than paying a contracting firm to do initial and final design on each rail system segment.

Just go look at the RFPs and responses each municipality has four expansion of their current system. It is all outsource to private industry, at great cost compared to doing it inside government.

simfree··on Lago, Open-Source Stripe Alternative, banks $22M in funding
Stripe is only used for edge cases in Amazon's payment flow, and Amazon tracks how much of its payment flow and what the cost differential between them processing with their direct relationships would be versus Stripe's markup.

Basically, here are the worst of the worst of Amazon's transactions, please take this risk onto Stripe's platform, then we will cut cost with full knowledge of exactly how much we will save by spending developer resources to cut out Stripe for this particular card type in this particular country.

I would not call this a healthy relationship, but rather stripe taking the marginal additional volume that Amazon brings to their platform to net slightly more money and get slightly more data points on weird payment methods.

Ah, seems you missed out on the funnest shenanigans inside AWS :D

These are called Fight Club issues, and are restricted access issues that don't show up for most team members. Gotta cordon off the real hairy bugs!

simfree··on Glory is only 11MB/sec away (2023)
AWS has plenty of failed data retrievals, outages not mentioned or documented, and other shenanigans of the sort. It's a turn and burn operation tho where skilled folk only spend a few quarters or years before moving onto other (usually more) stable tech companies.

You can hear all about this if you turn up to Harry's at 7pm on Thursdays, or at many of the other tech events in Seattle. Lots of current and ex-Amazonians out there with stories!

Users are noticing the difference between 5 non-parallel database queries that each take tens of milliseconds to a distributed database compared to querying an on server or directly adjacent server in under 0.2ms.

I am not proposing writing any additional cross-region consistentcy code, many CRUD applications have added zero cross-region consistentcy code and just left this entirely on Postgres to handle since bi-directional replicas are now a core feature.

The more complicated you make your stack the more likely you will end up with outages, data loss and inconsistency. Using plain jane battle hardened, well developed tools that can serve the internet at scale from a single modern server gives you a very simple architecture where most of that architecture is getting significant improvements every quarter as the libre software community improves Linux, Nginx, Postgres, etc versus whatever random person Amazon is letting work on RDS or DynamoDB for the next year until they PIP them (as they almost always do).

Running on bare metal nets you serious latency reductions and I/O bandwidth increases compared to the products you linked to, and you have significantly less complexity in a single server or dual server model, that is why operations like LetsEncrypt choose to use this dual physical server architecture to power their global services at web scale: https://letsencrypt.org/2021/01/21/next-gen-database-servers...

Very low internal latency from an on server database or directly adjacent database allows your software to run database queries orders of magnitudes faster and spend less resources per client served, resulting in a speedier, snappy experience for your end users compared to what any of these managed database services can provide in practice.

simfree··on Porn restrictions are leading to a VPN boom
Sounds like your friend was VPNing to the wrong jurisdiction.

PulsedMedia (Finland), IHostArt (Romania) and many other seedbox server providers exist and will not shut you down.

simfree··on Cloudflare R2 IA storage tier
Cloudflare has a very dysfunctional sales pipeline. Their free, premium and self-serve offerings might underpin the internet, but the highly profitable offerings that are gated behind their sales teams are not getting sold. Too many of the clients that they should be selling to.

Magic Transit (bring your own ASN), classic website DDoS protection (above the Business $200 tier, which has low, undisclosed data limits in regions like New Zealand) and ilk all require interacting with the sales rep, and unless your paying 5 figures a month they are disinterested.

There is a whole market out there between $300 to $2000 a month that Cloudflare could tap without making new infrastructure but is actively being ignored.

simfree··on Overlay networks based on WebRTC
This strategy of trying to snuff out web apps by locking all iOS users into a decade out of date fork of Chrome that only gets a trickle of new features, and those features consistently have added UX friction that exists in no other modern borders is working in North America.

simfree··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
The file size limits on iOS for MMS are far below what most carriers permit, making photos and videos sent from iPhone look much worse when sent via MMS.

Any replacement would have the same fraudulent traffic migrate to it.

You can already see this type of fraudulent traffic occur on Telegram with the constant crypto bots and on Signal with the romance scams.

A PSTN sunset would force this fraudulent traffic to migrate to the over the top communications platforms, eliminate many people's ability to access emergency services reliably, destroy reliable voice quality on cellular networks as there's no consistent way to prioritize third party voice and video traffic.

simfree··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
There are no third party RCS apps outside of hardware manufacturer skins on Google Messages as Google has shut them all out.

If you want to interact with the RCS world as a non-wireless carrier, expect to pay upwards of 10 cents a message and have a minimum revenue commit of thousands of dollars a month. Carriers also don't get paid for inbound texts on RCS, creating a huge new cost center instead of symmetrical texting volume resulting in minimal costs like the current SMS/MMS ecosystem.

simfree··on Send short links, get an SMS once read

simfree··on What Is WebTV?
I'm sure he had better connectivity than all the people on dialup using WebTV.

It's surprising that they never shipped V.92 support for most of these devices, you would think that saving tens of seconds would be a boon for an appliance product like this.

Has there been any work done to put old WebTV clients to use?

simfree··on Commerce Department Proposes Imposing "Know Your Customer" on IaaS Providers
There are credit unions with higher Zelle limits, nevermind actual ACH limits.

Switch to a credit union that values your business, they are much more motivated to hook you up with high ACH limits, and I've repeatedly seen them issue loans at rates well below market.
