siidooloo··on Life and death on a superyacht
You’re with a barista for 5 minutes. You’re at the hairdressers for an hour. Crew on a boat is stuck there mostly 24/7. Even if it’s contract work its clearly a different kind of job.

Also, you should know your chef’s name after a couple of months at sea. That seems like basic humanity.

siidooloo··on Tick Wrapped in Spider Silk Found Trapped in Amber
Why would a monkey give birth to a human?
siidooloo··on Judge Rules Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter
Then maybe the government should not use twitter for any official statements? Why should they be allowed to get around the rules by using twitter?
siidooloo··on Ancient Rome’s Collapse Is Written into Arctic Ice
Can you name the academics who claim war was not rampant over the last couple thousand years?
siidooloo··on Was Cleopatra Beautiful? (1997)
In the republican era realism was prized. Politicians wanted their portraits more warts and all to make them seem like one of the people.

In the Imperial era propaganda changed and sculpture started becoming more abstract to make politicians seem more perfect and indestructible.

Cleopatras portraits are probably idealized. Caesar’s are probably fairly accurate.

siidooloo··on Netflix is basically remaking all of TV now
The quality of TV writing has definitely improved in recent years. But we a have a new problem now. The producers still want the shows to run forever. Instead of telling discrete stories and wrapping them up in a season or two they try to keep stringing the audience along. The characters end up repeating the same situations.

Rather then one series that runs for 5 to 10 years I’d prefer 2 or 3 different series telling different stories about the same characters. A few crime series have been dealing with one case person. I’d like to see more things like that.

siidooloo··on Netflix is basically remaking all of TV now
This is one area I think Netflix format puts them at a disadvantage. At any one time how many shows does HBO have running the one person likes? A couple? But HBO stretches thoes shows out over 3 or 4 months. By the time those couple things you like end, something else is on.

On Netflix some people go through a season of a show in a day or 2. Then they complain there is nothing on for a couple months until they spend a weekend watching something.

siidooloo··on A tool that lets you hear both Yanny and Laurel
It sounds more like Yaw Yee to me.
siidooloo··on Subscription Hell
I should also add, Quark was the king until it wasn’t. Adobe will be the king until they aren’t.
siidooloo··on Subscription Hell
In the past Adobe’s competition wasn’t as good. Now, the competitors products are just as good. In the past PS competitors lacked features pros needed like PMS spot channels/CMYK/LAB. Not anymore. And Resolve is very compelling in the video realm.

Many of Adobe’s core products have languished at the same time as many of the features that set them apart in the past are become less differentiating. The photo editing/vector drawing space is becoming more commoditized.

siidooloo··on Subscription Hell
Except, if the only app you need is photoshop you can own Affiniy Photo for $30. Or, you can own Affinity Design for $30. And this one is the real kicker, Blackmagic is giving away most of what you need for free, and if you need more you can get a permanent license for a few hundred bucks. How long do you think it will be before Adobe starts really bleeding.
siidooloo··on Subscription Hell
Its going to be a real problem for Adobe. Their biggest apps (PS/AI/IND) haven’t had real upgrade worthy updates in years. Competing apps like Affinity Photo are pretty much 1 to 1 replacements. Eventually some significant portion of Adobe’s core users are going to go elsewhere.
siidooloo··on Unlocking the Business Secrets of Escape Rooms
If you play a video game does it ruin it for you that someone wrote the puzzles and you can turn it off at any time? Maybe you just don’t like puzzles.
siidooloo··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
They were probably trying to slip you up and see if you would say in the trunk or something.
siidooloo··on I Was a Russian Facebook Troll Named Martha
Does it have to be new or unique to be troubling?
siidooloo··on Guccifer 2.0 Slipped Up and Revealed He Was a Russian Intelligence Officer
How does that contradict what the other person said?
siidooloo··on DeleteFacebook: Perspective from Mastodon
The issue isn’t the ads that bother you. Its the ones that don’t. Everyone thinks of themselves as sceptical people, but we’re only sceptical of things we already don’t believe. The ads that don’t bother you, and the ones you don’t recognize as advertising are working on you just as much as the ones you don’t like.
siidooloo··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Or headhunters.
siidooloo··on A forgotten theory of dreams that inspired Vladimir Nabokov
I see green blobs. As I fall asleep they become pictures, and I know I’m about to fall asleep for real when they become photorealistic.
siidooloo··on Fake news is not the real problem
Alice: “Standard boring political statement.”

Bob: “Alice is a reptile from the planet Xenon!”

Carol: “That’s clearly not true. What Bob is saying is fake.”

Bob: “See! Carol is part of the concpiary!”

siidooloo··on Typesetting and paste-up, 1970 style
I don’t think school newspapers typically have access to the most high end equipment.
siidooloo··on U.S. Charges 13 Russians, 3 Companies for Interfering with Election
In a free society you can’t stop influence and propaganda. But, the allegations in the indictment include things like stealing real people’s identities and using them to fay for political advertisements. These are things we should be able to stop.
siidooloo··on The FBI, CIA and NSA say American citizens shouldn't use Huawei phones
If this is your perspective, maybe it would be better if everyone bought phones from Finland.
siidooloo··on Unilever threatens to pull its ads from Facebook and Google over 'toxic content'
How many people in the US live somewhere the tap water is unsafe. How many people on the US drink tap water. That second circle is much larger. So why do people drink bottled water?
siidooloo··on Two Different Kinds of Illustration
I think the one word that sums it up is ‘safe.’ Few people would be willing to spend millions developing an app, then risk it all letting someone express themself. The NYT lower stakes lets them be better.
siidooloo··on A Life Hearing Voices: How I Manage Auditory Hallucinations
Thisk about it this way: Scenario One: you imagine a nail being hammered into your hand. Scenario Two: your hand is in an apparatus where by a series of mirrors you see a nail hammered into your hand, causing you to pull it away.
siidooloo··on A Life Hearing Voices: How I Manage Auditory Hallucinations
When thinking the voice is inside your head. A hallucination is inside your ear. It has the same sensation as a real sound.
siidooloo··on More than 94% of net new electricity capacity in the USA from renewables in 2017
Foreign volatility could still effect prices in the US.
siidooloo··on Apple's privacy feature costs ad companies millions
I think the easier explanation is that Apple's actions cut into Google's bottom line. Strategically Apple gets to be the good guy while making Google look like the bad guy.
siidooloo··on So Close
That makes it sound worse. Based on what you say he wasn't paid for 2 out of 3 months. And presumably they were bringing new people on until the very end, when they must have known it might fall apart.
