sigmonsays··on Incus – Next-generation system container, application container, and VM manager
the features worth mentioning imho are the different storage backends and their features. Using btrfs, lvm or zfs there is some level of support of thin copy provisioning and snapshotting. I believe btrfs/zfs have parity in terms of supported operations. Cheap snapshots and provisioning of both containers and VMs using the same tool is pretty awesome.

I personally use lxd for running my homelab VMs and containers

sigmonsays··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
i'm still old school syncthing + photoprism. Perhaps I should give immich a better look
sigmonsays··on Structured Errors in Go (2022)
i'm not sure the point here, you can carry along information in errors at API boundaries and collect the info when you emit a log line. Using built in errors.Wrapf and slog, you get everything you need already.
sigmonsays··on MinIO Guts Management Dashboard
The fact minio is being so silent is questioning what's really going on here

please provide a source

sigmonsays··on MinIO Guts Management Dashboard
latest versions of minio has had the admin console removed entirely and all that exists is a simple object browser that shows buckets and objects.

No longer do you have the ability to manage the cluster. Key things like users, groups, replication, policy, etc.

As I have recently began adopting minio in a more serious use case, getting features ripped out without notification is pretty harsh.

Obviously minio is free to do what they wish but it definitely makes me reconsider adoption of their technology.

Removal of features with no notification or explanation is really hurting the product and companys reputation. What says they dont break replication or enforce limits on cluster size or drive next?

What are other peoples thoughts?

sigmonsays··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
self hosting is entirely different than enterprise security practices. You're a little out of touch with reality if you don't realize this.
sigmonsays··on GTK Krell Monitors
I ran this thing with slackware and window manager back in the day. My goodness, I have forgotten about this entirely.

I might have to spin it up for fun.

For all the nix fols, "nix run nixpkgs#gkrellm" works =P

sigmonsays··on What I've learned from jj
i'm growing tired of these git alternatives.

I feel like people should just learn to use git.

sigmonsays··on GitDroid: A third party Android app manager for apps uploaded to GitHub releases

sigmonsays··on Tilt: dev environment as code
tilt might be nice but I do not develop in containers or kubernetes. Tilt to me looks like more glue on top to make updating kube fast. It might make sense for some but it seems pointless to me.

If I can run external dependencies in docker locally, I can setup my app to run entirely from my laptop. That's all docker-compose does, just runs dev deps like DBs and other services i'm not editing code of.

As far as code reloading goes, there is a million tools to do that already. Go already compiles locally much faster than seconds.

All that being said, why are people choosing to develop in containers/kubernetes?

Maybe apps that need to be more tightly integrated with kube would benefit from this?

sigmonsays··on Tilt: dev environment as code
i don't get the value of a tool like this.

Do we really struggle bringing up services as containers and applying kube configs?

For my development of services that run in kube, I don't dev with kube, you shouldn't have to. I also use docker-compose for most dev env services.

Perhaps i'm not developing the right kind of software. Whoever finds this type of tool useful, when would you use it?

sigmonsays··on People say they prefer stories written by humans over AI, study says otherwise
I question whether AI can create engaging new ideas. Isn't everything it outputs already based on existing data?

sigmonsays··on I found a backdoor into my bed
This is so cringe, i am getting motivated to only use dumb devices.

I no longer can trust that someone is looking at my TV data, Oven data, thermostat data, etc and tweeting about it.

sigmonsays··on Maria Montessori
curious why wealth plays into enforcing smart phone usage.
sigmonsays··on I still like Sublime Text
I use sublime text to edit all my notes for both work and personal. It runs on every computer and laptop I have.

I love sublime text. I'm on version 3, i think there is a 4 out but nothing is drawing me to use it.

sigmonsays··on Discussion: Reduce error handling boilerplate in Golang using '?'
I vote no on this proposal.

Go error handling should remain simple, like the language.

These are all tools, just pick the one you like and stop trying to make them like others.

sigmonsays··on Nix – Death by a Thousand Cuts
how do you do that?
sigmonsays··on Trying out Zed after more than a decade of Vim/Neovim
i'm fairly surprised that i fired it up, wrote some go code, and the lsp worked.

I too am growing tired of tinkering and want minimal configs. So much so that I had to force myself to stop using doom emacs in favor of neovim. Neovim setup is much simpler now that lua exists but i'd rather not tinker as much as I do.

Enabling/Disabling plugins is fun in a way when you wanna take the time to do that.

I might give zed a spin a few more times.

Can zed be run from a terminal over ssh or is it just GUI?

sigmonsays··on I ditched the algorithm for RSS

sigmonsays··on Nix – Death by a Thousand Cuts
i use nixos on VMs, my desktop (Gaming and productivity) and servers. I use flakes for everything.

I've painfully learned how to do everything I need. My only big complaint is updating systemd. I have yet to figure out the systemd update bug. Sometimes nixos-rebuild-switch takes my network offline when updating systemd. It's incredibly annoying to update a box and have it drop offline. My work around is to do a 'diff' and when systemd is updated, I reboot manually and only update the boot image.

any nix users aware of a derivation?
sigmonsays··on Siyuan: Privacy-first, self-hosted personal knowledge management software
I can second the recommendations i've read here.

My approach to knowledge management has been super simple. Everything is in git, in a big directory structure i've organically grown over time. I have so many notes.. 7 to 8 thousands of them.

Keeping it in git has allowed me flexibility to use it how i see fit. Sometimes i'm in emacs/nevom. Most the time i'm in sublime text because I have workspaces per project/concept.

Finally, for mobile, I push them all to my own gitea instance. I rarely need access to my notes on mobile but it's been something i've been thinking about more.

If anyone has any recommendations on how to read a directory of text files on android, i'm all ears.

sigmonsays··on Hoarder: Self-hostable bookmark-everything app
anyone know how this compares to archivebox?

Is it just bookmarks or does it download full pages?

Bookmark applications are generally a failure for long term storage because links always change over time.. so i'm not sure what lense to look at this app through.

sigmonsays··on Practical GrapheneOS for the Paranoid • Ventral Digital
I wish there was an app database that says what works and what does not.

For instance, I tried installing android auto from the google play store and it failed miserably. However, in the grapheneOS store, you can install it there.

That is entirely not trivial for me and having to go read the docs on every app I want is rather annoying.

Other apps that do not work for me at all are anything wallet related, specifically ticket master. For concerts I have to use someone elses phone which is inconvenient.
