sierra1011··on Longtime Linux CIFS/SMB3 Maintainer Steps Down
The ultimate step down, one could say.
sierra1011··on Police removed prominent scientists from American Diabetes Association meeting
That only really applies to the first time it's issued. Repeat prescriptions can be issued with the NHS app. I've requested dosage changes on multiple occasions and they review it with the request and sign it off.

Any long term condition like diabetes isn't the admin overhead you're making it out to be.

sierra1011··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
I got an email this morning.

> You requested that we alert you when the actual cost associated with your Monthly AWS budget exceeds $2.00 for the current month. The month actual cost associated with this budget is $646,677,805.51.

Current usage: $1.70.

I called it a rounding error and figured it would wash out within a couple of days...

sierra1011··on Rebuilding My Homelab with Compose, Ruby, IPv6, and No Kubernetes
For transparency, I work with K8s every day and run it with FluxCD as my homelab and have in various formats for a few years.

Before that though, I had a single computer (a NUC if memory serves) with systemd running docker containers. Dead simple.

sierra1011··on HuggingFace is down due to global AWS outage
Worksop also has an outage as a result https://status.workos.com/

sierra1011··on Notes on a non-profit indicted for bank fraud
Dupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47973309
sierra1011··on SETI@home: Data Acquisition and Front-End Processing (2025)
And today that wallet would be worth $6. But tomorrow it could be worth $8.
sierra1011··on GitLab discovers widespread NPM supply chain attack
I'm also a victim of this. Last time I try and install Backstage.

Have you wiped your laptop/infected machine? If not I would recommend it; part of it created a ~/.dev-env directory which turned my laptop into a GitHub runner, allowing for remote code execution.

I have a read-only filesystem OS (Bluefin Linux) and I don't know quite how much this has saved me, because so much of the attack happens in the home directory.

sierra1011··on GitLab discovers widespread NPM supply chain attack
It does install a GitHub runner and registers the infected machine as a runner, so remote code execution remains possible. It might be a stretch to call it persistent but it definitely tries.
sierra1011··on I can't recommend Grafana anymore
Having been using Grafana community/cloud for a number of years, my new gig is currently moving everything to SigNoz. Mostly slick, under active development, communicative team, open source... what's not to love?
sierra1011··on What is going on with all this radioactive shrimp?
Hah, thanks for sharing this, TIL.

I just remembered the headline from a few days ago and (on mobile) could not find it again, coming to the incorrect conclusion. Mea culpa.

sierra1011··on What is going on with all this radioactive shrimp?
This is a dupe from like, last week.
sierra1011··on Let's Take Esoteric Programming Languages Seriously
This is as far as I got also, starting me on a tangent of whether this is a common misuse or if it was caused by something else like auto captioning.
sierra1011··on Going down the rabbit hole of Postgres 18 features
Works for me on Brave, Android 15.
sierra1011··on Optimizing my sleep around Claude usage limits
Ah, the classic 28 hour day

sierra1011··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
GrapheneOS? On a Pixel? You must be one of those criminals /s
sierra1011··on Ask HN: Anyone else tired of AI being forced on you?
I'm so tired of opening every program or app I have to use for work and being met by a popup or notification that I can, should I wish, do something with AI. I can't even change focus of a Meet window without it popping up suggesting Gemini, and I can see that notification countless times in a day. Can't turn it off, I'm not an Org Admin.

I just want to not have it shoved in my face. It's exhausting.

sierra1011··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
Coming from a Pixel ~5 to a Fairphone 5, this is by far my biggest gripe. Constantly finding it unlocked because it unlocks as soon as I lock it.
sierra1011··on By default, Signal doesn't recall
I recommend Bazzite, a Fedora SilverBlue image customised for gaming on Linux. I've been gaming on it exclusively for over a year and between it, Steam, and Proton, I'm yet to encounter a game in my steam library that doesn't run.

sierra1011··on The recently lost file upload feature in the Nextcloud app for Android
Arguably the originator's blog post has some individual merit beyond an article from a tech news aggregator.
sierra1011··on BYD Keeps Delivering on Tesla's Unkept Promises
Cloudflare =/= the website.

Sounds like a you problem.

sierra1011··on Show HN: Koreo – A platform engineering toolkit for Kubernetes
Agreed. I'm hoping the old Weaveworks GUI makes a comeback in the near future under the new organisation, as it looked to do a better job than anything else I've seen so far.
sierra1011··on The 2008 coal ash disaster in Kingston, Tennessee
Terrifying that this could happen as recently as 2008 and, I'm sure, with better understanding of potential consequences.

In 1966, something similar (although with a mining waste dump, instead of ash) happened in Aberfan, Wales (in the UK) with a more tragic outcome[1].

The question should be whether this occurred due to ignorance or ignoring the lessons of history, which rhymes if not repeats.

sierra1011··on Welcome to Ladybird, a truly independent web browser
Seconded for Zen.
sierra1011··on How to change your settings to make yourself less valuable to Meta
I live in a fairly small town in Wales, and pretty much everything is coordinated via Facebook. Makes it very hard to completely escape it, but as you say a "burner" account is the only way to permit access with minimal engagement.

sierra1011··on We're excited about our new roundabout
As a general rule, one should be looking in the direction in which the vehicle is traveling. It's easily done though, if rushing, or if the vehicle in front pulls away slightly but stops again.
sierra1011··on Thousands of Linux systems infected by stealthy malware since 2021
This is a duplicate of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41736470 , but the worst kind of duplicate; same topic, rewritten [read: worse] prose
sierra1011··on If WordPress is to survive, Matt Mullenweg must be removed
Lightly off-topic, but:

>Five for the Future asks that if you benefit from WordPress, you give back 5% of your time directly to that open-source project

As someone that semifrequently has to support WP installs, I would definitely make a case for it not being a benefit in my life
