siegecraft··on Nvidia Shield TV Owners Are Pissed About the Banner Ads in Android TV
This is different from the recommendation "channels" that each app can provide. You can choose whether or not each one shows up on the home screen, re-order them, and so on.

This is a giant banner at the top of the home page that shows ads from random streaming services that you may or may not subscribe to or have installed.

siegecraft··on New Records Show the NYPD’s Favored Punishment: Less Vacation Time
current job? no. a job with a strong union? yes. a startup with a certain kind of work hard/play hard (really just lots of drinking) culture? definitely, there's plenty of stories like this (and worse) in the books.
siegecraft··on Fraidycat: Follow from afar
I thought you could at least get around it by installing firefox nightly and creating custom extension collections.
siegecraft··on Open source projects should run office hours
I assumed this was written from the perspective of someone trying to turn an open source project into a paying gig by attracting sponsors, patrons, etc.
siegecraft··on Counterfeiting Stock – Explaining illegal naked shorting and stock manipulation
I used to use the text-to-speech feature of pocket for this use case.
siegecraft··on KFC Mascot Col. Sanders Talks Malbolge Programming on General Hospital
I don't think you need something that heavyweight to do this (although maybe for an entire headline). Amazon has had the "Statistically Improbable Phrases" feature for books for quite a while now.
siegecraft··on Is Ghislaine Maxwell secretly one of the most powerful Redditors of all time?
I meant take a corpus of her known writings and compare them to the redditor to see if they matched up.
siegecraft··on Is Ghislaine Maxwell secretly one of the most powerful Redditors of all time?
Makes me curious what stylometric analysis would say.
siegecraft··on Foam – A Roam Research alternative with VSCode, Markdown and GitHub
Super excited to try this out since it maps strongly to my existing notetaking workflow (markdown, vscode, custom extensions, and so on). I hope the author (or a contributor) can come up with a clever way to input drafts via a mobile device. I've considered and rejected many workflows and continue to use a gesture on my phone mapped to the "create a new card" action in trello and manually move it over later.
siegecraft··on List of Twitter mute words for your timeline
Twitter (unintentionally, I'm sure) built an adblocker into their app
siegecraft··on More nurturing reading environment may stimulate brain development in children
Do you have any other app (or even linux/Windows/Mac software) recommendations? There's just so much crap out there..
siegecraft··on Roam: Why I Love It and How I Use It
Seconded and I'm glad I saw this before I got too deep into it. I'm wary to try even something totally open source because of course their is the adoption cost (do you move all of your old notes over? do you have a split brain? Too much waste time in tiddlywiki for me is a harsh lesson).

That said, I still appreciate the effort people spend in thinking about these things, but a cloud-only offering (cloud-only and 3rd-party hosted, I should emphasize) is sadly not for me.

siegecraft··on Brave launches 1.0
Re: criticism 1, this is mostly true. However the fact that it's "not google" adds some privacy, or at least diffuses vulnerabilities.

Regarding criticism 2, you have to opt-in. Otherwise brave is just a browser with adblocking capabilities built-in.

I don't understand criticism 3, but then again I have just been using Brave without opting-in to the BAT portion so I'm out of the loop on that.

Regarding 4, why would Paypal be the best choice? Paypal has shown they will close your account and confiscate your money pretty much at their whim. Using a non-BTC/Ether crypto token at least means your Brave wallet isn't a big fat target for crypto thieves.

I think the success of patreon et al have shown that people in fact are perfectly willing to pay content creators, they just hate ads.

siegecraft··on Alabama tracking students' locations to penalize them for leaving games early
I agree. Some players at Northwestern tried a few years back and the NLRB ruled against them. See https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/18/sports/ncaafootball/nlrb-...
siegecraft··on Japanese architects who treated buildings like living organisms
First thing I thought of as well as I know one of the projects that Alexander wrote an entire book chronicling was the Eishin campus (http://www.livingneighborhoods.org/ht-0/eishincampus.htm). These architects don't seem to have the same values as Alexander, though, for anyone hoping to find similar work.
siegecraft··on One week of empathy training
Ah, yes, disability tourism.
siegecraft··on How I Taught My Kid to Read
Curious what you mean by a different direction? I'm a fan of John Gatto so I wonder what direction you mean..
siegecraft··on The Dark Side of Dark Mode
Am I the only one who would prefer to just use f.lux's "Darkroom" mode (red on black, basically) for coding at night / in the dark? Doesn't kill my night vision. Of course you have to switch all of your apps out of "Dark Mode" or you'll just be starting at giant blobs of red.
siegecraft··on Betrayed by an app she had never heard of
The good news is you can turn off most of those and truecaller still works. I just checked and I only allow it access to Contacts, SMS and Phone which, given the purpose of the app, seems appropriate.
siegecraft··on How the quantum search algorithm works
For me, the usage of spaced repetition ("a medium which makes memory a choice") built into the essay was more interesting than the content itself. Now we just need a standard for embedding these sorts of question and answer in documents so you can use the spaced repetition software of your choice (or just publish an anki deck for it).
siegecraft··on How I Eat for Free in NYC Using Python, Automation, AI, and Instagram
That's true, but this is actually normal behavior in the instagram world since it doesn't have the concept of share/retweet. So you screenshot or use some app (ie regram) that re-posts someone's content and credits the original user.
siegecraft··on Tiddlywiki – A non-linear personal web notebook
I run a tiddlywiki server (on my server) and sync the files between all my devices. That way I always have a copy of my data, but I always do my editing through the server. Previous to this setup I tried to sync to all my devices and edit them locally, but it wasn't worth the trouble. I find that I don't mind doing all my edits through an online service.
siegecraft··on The strength of a monopoly can be guessed at by calling customer support
i guess this explains why Google doesn't even have customer service
siegecraft··on Ending support for Dropbox syncing to drives with certain uncommon file systems
If you want absolute feature parity with dropbox, then yes I suppose you do. But you don't have to stand up a server just to sync files between your devices.
siegecraft··on WeWork Will No Longer Let Employees Expense Any Kind of Meat
I was wondering when someone would mention diabetes. I feel like this policy will add a few more diabetics to the population. Now if they wanted to be really revolutionary they could ban sweets/sugar from their reimbursement policies instead..
siegecraft··on Digital Exile: How I Got Banned for Life from AirBnB
Yes, if you're interested you can look up hospitality law or innkeeper law. Airbnb and others attempt to replicate existing services while sidestepping the regulations in place, which of course makes them cheaper / faster because they don't have to deal with the regulatory burden..
siegecraft··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
This problem is easy to solve: give users the tools to do their own filtering. But services like to pretend that it's a hard problem because they don't want to actually cede that control to their users. The whole point of controlling the communication networks is to control what and how people say and hear.
siegecraft··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
Lack of knowledge doesn't neccesarily stop one from programming. There's nothing stopping you from calling yourself a programmer, or applying for programming jobs, and so on. Whereas to be a lawyer or a doctor you usually have to be licensed by some sort of government authority.
siegecraft··on How and why I run my own DNS servers
I think calling it peer is misleading/imprecise, since in the context of the internet peer/peering refers to the interconnection of two networks, having your own AS, running BGP, etc.
siegecraft··on Dark Algorithms and UX in Health Insurance
When doing something malicious, use incompetence as your cover.
