Pascal’s wager… but for the new AI gods
sidravi1··on Retro-Tech Parenting
We recently got a landline. A few of my daughter’s friends got the “tin can phone” but it looked so poorly made and over-priced. It was easy enough to setup voip with one of those old school stretchy cabled phones.

It pretty cute watching her get excited when it rings and sweet that she gets to talk to her friends any time she likes… from the living room.

Is there an easy port of this for OpenCode?
sidravi1··on Is 2026 Next Year?
Also 2024 is not the previous year. It provided references so must be right.
sidravi1··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2025)
IDinsight | India, Senegal, Kenya | Full stack data scientist I/II (Python/React)

https://idinsight.bamboohr.com/careers/13

Come use your skills for good. Work on some of the most challenging (and not just technically) projects. Here are the kinds of projects you'd work on - all actual IDinsight projects:

- Help an NGO find out of school kids using predictive models

- Help a state government in India identify land parcels for solar parks using geospatial analysis

- Allocate teachers to schools to maximise classroom coverage using linear mixed integer programming

- Connect citizens to benefits using agentic AI solutions Answer questions from new and expecting mothers using an LLM powered Q&A service

- Support teachers and content developers in a bilingual structured pedagogy program in a West African country using LLMs

- Support Community Health Workers with LLM powered tools to improve their workflow

Come for the work but stay for the team culture. The most caring, funny, and talented bunch of people you'll ever work with.

sidravi1··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
We fine-tuned a Gemma 2B to identify urgent messages sent by new and expecting mothers on a government-run maternal health helpline.

This reminds me that David Mackay’s book and his lectures are so excellent on these topics.

Let me guess. You are a white guy in South East Asia.
sidravi1··on Does Tweeting Improve Citations? One-Year Results from a Randomized Trial
I'd love to see the paper (but don't want to pay $36 for it). Citations are often power-law distributed - I'd suspect one outliers is driving this effect.

The historic preludes to the chapters are awesome. The dynamic programming chapter starts with an intro to the study of meters in Sanskrit poetry.

Also, you are conflating social return vs. private return. Yes, me being able to go on facebook has very little social returns but it has some private returns. Private returns mean a lot to people - just look at all the people working on wall st.
sidravi1··on Uganda is shutting down schools funded by Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates
I worked for Bridge previously and have seen their schools and visited numerous government schools in the vicinity. There are a lot of valid criticisms against Bridge but (1) kids do not learn relative to government school (2) kids are not safe, are not amongst them.

Also, I don't understand why "for profit" is considered bad. You are not taking away the free public option but rather increasing their choice set by providing a private option. Parents can choose and that is generally considered to be welfare enhancing.

I'd love for CNN to do some real investigative journalism for a change and actually visit a few schools.
