shrubby··on Building from zero after addiction, prison, and a felony
Well said here.

We don't have a honest discussion about the progression of addiction so the choices are not visible, until later.

The first beer is the most critical choice, yet it's made for us (in 99% of the cases) by our peers. So is it a choice really?

We're routine (addiction) prone herd animals and as long as we pretend otherwise (free will and the likes) we're stuck in repeating this.

shrubby··on Pentagon raised threat of Israeli spying on U.S. to highest level, sources say
Seems legit.
shrubby··on Do we need billionaires?
Based on what Sarah Wynn-Williams told about Zuck and what we've seen a lot of these state out loud (and know a lot more that have exrepessed this in private) seems that the society is being held hostage by child's who are threatening us with a tantrum, should we refuse the lollipop.

I think it's about time we turn adult now. The coming of age for humanity, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer used to say.

Bill Hicks had a good advice to the marketing guys: "kill yourself" so I you're onto something here!
shrubby··on Do we need billionaires?
Human being, with very few exceptions, is corrupted by power. And a billion dollars is immense amount power.

You can make your opponent's life a living hell with a hundred thousand and buy or figure out a way to frame extortion material from almost any decision maker with a million.

See how wars are being started tweeting from the toilet seat by a man who has never known anything but power to harm others.

See the many "formerly normal" people ending on a private island, doing horrendous things to children.

We tried to figure out examples of people with power who weren't corrupted by it, at least to some extent, and came up with very few.

It's a human trait we know very well, but do very little about.

shrubby··on Do we need billionaires?
Correct once again it seems.
shrubby··on Do we need billionaires?
In the times of metacrisis and power concentrated in the hands of few who actively try to fry the world I think what we need is the exact opposite of that.

That is what we've had mostly for the last fifty years and look where it has gotten us? And US. I'm not from US

shrubby··on Do we need billionaires?
I was just gathering a list of global top hundred with their influence relevant spending and boy that was not a pretty sight. At least in terms of normal people.

I'm tempted to support this notion.
shrubby··on Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
Neutral social backend/API and a local client with the algorithm I've customized.

Or something like that.

shrubby··on Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
The old social media was at its simplest a chronological feed from the friends, you wanted to see.

If I want to add personalization I could add a algorithm to do that, only so that it promotes my wellbeing.

It really shouldn't be this difficult.

shrubby··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
JTFC the comments on this one.

And the "Free Palestine, F zionists" that made a return to ramp.

I shouldn't be surprised of the security by obscurity of the aviation industry after seeing it for 10+ years, but still am.

Remember the 737 Max guy. And the likes.

Of FFS.

shrubby··on Big tech's anti-labor playbook has come for Wikipedia
I see this as a line.

Other end is concentrated power (via money, violence, manipulation,...) so something like a dollar per universal vote.

Other end is one vote for each, including the future generations.

Wikipedia is an obstacle for the first one that must be taken down. Perhaps one of the last barriers before the endgame.

And there's no fuzzy middle option, we've (me included) have thought in our comfort for too long that us vs. them scenario that both the left and the right (at least mainstream ones) is possible. But it's now clear that there's no lukewarm at-right or green social democrat version. Only full fascism or full democracy.

We might still have the time but one by one the platforms that would enable this (wiki included) keep being ingested thus making it less and less likely.

But like you said five years ago this level of consciousness would have been out of the question for us both so perhaps there are more of us?

shrubby··on Big tech's anti-labor playbook has come for Wikipedia
Must be :D
shrubby··on Big tech's anti-labor playbook has come for Wikipedia
Wikipedia is a threat to the technofeodalist AI mind shaping consortium.

As long as it's reasonably decent, the AI can't go full biased without consequences, but once it's gone there's nowhere normal people can easily to go and get a good enough sanity check.

shrubby··on Taking a walk may lead to more creativity than sitting, study finds (2014)
Anything I can remove, I can restore. So yes and no.

Few people have the willpower to stand against the addictive design, but I'm not one of them :D

shrubby··on Taking a walk may lead to more creativity than sitting, study finds (2014)
I decided to go offline for this summer. I got a dumb phone and a card for public transportation, instead of the app I'm using now.

Downtime from the algorithmic manipulation has been the breeding ground for my creativity and this is one more step to this direction.

shrubby··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
If there's a problem with the reader the firmware can be updated but I don't remember such issues since my first reader (Kindle version without backlight and physical buttons only, no idea of the year).

Now a fourth one (Kobo) in use and all the previous ones still fully functional and in use by close ones.

shrubby··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
Who needs software updates and Bezos's spying.

We have several different ecosystem e-readers in our household and all are used via USB and Calibre. The "extra time used" is won by multitude with approach where the reading stays in the center and uploading is once in a while event.

This creates a barrier for addictive bookshopping, though a reader with plenty of books allows the change of minds, not just the endless booscrrolling that a connected device enables.

Nice pitch. I'll stream it right away!

I've been watching Andor as a instructional manual recently and this seems like a good addition to the reality based manuals out there.

Cory Doctorow wrote a nice summary of the Zuckerstreisand book by Sarah Wynn-Williams.

Then, Facebook becomes too big to jail.

Finally, Facebook becomes too big to care."

I don't think it is making profits?

Heavily subsidized and farmers are hurting.

shrubby··on Gap between national food production and food-based dietary guidance (2025)
Nationalist food security, at least here in Finland, seems really paradoxical as the main focus seems to be animal production, with imported feed.
shrubby··on How Mark Klein told the EFF about Room 641A [book excerpt]
I always keep coming back to the Nixon years when basic income was first approved in the senate by the republicans and stopped in the house by democrats.

What a different world we'd be living in, if the (back then, at least supposedly) greatest democracy would have shown the way to a universal safety net.

How fucking sad that we ended in a world where the finders of flaws or zerodays are being suppressed and prosecuted, instead of allowing them to make the world a better place.

A handful of narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths now hold almost all power with these structures.

At least now the pretense of democracy is dropped.
