shric··on Building an antilibrary: the power of unread books
Yes, an anti-résumé listing only what one has not studied or experienced but limited to things that one has even the vaguest aspirations of one day studying or experiencing would be a great thing to have.
shric··on GTA 5 source code leaks online
They have an incentive to uphold their end, otherwise they will never be able to extort someone else in the future.

shric··on Why Emacs Keys Are Painful
Left handed gamer here. I use wasd with my right hand and the mouse with my left. Life's too short to mess with default key bindings...
shric··on How to learn chess as an adult (2021)
Yes, but I have no patience for that. As soon as one game is done I've either had enough of chess for now or want the dopamine hit of the next game immediately.
shric··on How to learn chess as an adult (2021)
> I don't understand how people learn from slamming blitz/bullet games. The time constraints are too rushed to really think about what makes a move good or bad. I assumed it was a young person's thing, but the author said he plays these quick formats too.

I'm 47 and started playing around 5 years ago. I only play Blitz and Bullet because I find it fun. In the first two years I went from around 1000 on lichess to around 1700. I've been "stuck" at 1700 plus or minus 100 since then.

I know I could improve with puzzles and classical time controls and study and analysis but I have no interest in that. I play games for fun. If I improve then great. If not no problem. It's the same as breaking out a game of Tetris or something for 5 minutes to me.

shric··on Warren Buffett: Tesla Stock Is a Terrible Investment (2022)
> My best move was buying 20 OTM tsla calls 3 minutes before they announced the split.

Options adjust accordingly when a split occurs, so why is it relevant that you bought 3 minutes before?

Tesla has had two splits so far and there wasn't much movement during either.

shric··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
I bought a 2017 Mercedes a few months ago and was disgusted to find that I was unable to update my map data beyond 2020. In the first week of ownership I had driven on to roads that didn't exist in their map.

Also, it appeared to have no network connection so would not pick routes according to traffic.

I spent $600 on an aftermarket CarPlay and Android Auto device and couldn't be happier.

I thought the GP was so obviously sarcasm that it didn't need an explicit tag

shric··on A chess TUI implementation
Looks good! In case anyone else wonders (first thing I wanted to know), UCI (to talk to engines and online chess) is in the to-do, not yet implemented.
shric··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Because they're different brands. Volkswagen own Porsche and Audi, but they're listed separately and presumably they have different reliability levels. There are also different reliability levels across different models, but they drew the line at brands.
shric··on Unciv
Not a complaint, more an FYI. I see a large number of games were added in 2020. I tried 3 randomly and all were either "incompatible with my device" or "made for an older Android version". Should I report them, or is it best to leave them for people with older versions of Android?

shric··on Google admits cracking down on people using ad blockers
Also, YouTube itself is used to pass misinformation and harmful content (also in a small percentage of videos).

It's up to the viewer to decide how to act on it.

shric··on Google admits cracking down on people using ad blockers
The in video sponsors are what I would complain about, but as long as Sponsorblock works I'm happy. Been paying for YouTube premium since before it was called that.
shric··on When do "brains beat brawn" in chess? An experiment
I'm around the same rating as the OP. I've also experimented with playing Stockfish with queen odds, etc. One thing I noticed early on is that it's much much harder to beat a much higher rated human when they give me queen odds.

Stockfish literally plays itself when finding the next move and because it's down a queen it just seeks further loss minimization and it won't assume the opponent will fall for tricky but unsound tactics.

A high rated human on the other hand will easily exploit my lower tactical ability and be tricky to get the advantage back. This applies especially on fast time control games.

shric··on Migrating to OpenTelemetry
I once worked out what it would cost to send our company's prod logs to datadog. It was 1.5x our total AWS cost. The company ran entirely on AWS
shric··on Use Timestamps
Funnily, the post's example.of https://jvns.ca/blog/2023/02/28/some-notes-on-using-nix/ means I can see clearly the date and nothing more in my Firefox/Android URL bar

shric··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
> In 2023, "making over 100K" just means that you're usually on-time with your monthly housing payment.

This hugely depends on where you live. To 90% (conservatively low) of the world's population making over 100k a year is insane levels of luxury.

shric··on 15 Years of Android Memories

shric··on It's Fucking Impossible to Stay Healthy
Agreed. I find 9-5 terrible, but I do it because it's expected. 8-6 or more is inhumane
shric··on LIGO Surpasses the Quantum Limit
People have down voted the parent comment but I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was the tone, but it caused a series of informative explanations that may not have arisen without this post.
shric··on Fast Stable Diffusion on CPU 1.0.0 beta for Windows and Linux
I haven't measured exactly but, for the CPU and time shown on that page, it looks to be about 10-20 times slower than my rtx4090 which is much faster (less slower) than I would have expected.
