shouldbeworking··on Ask HN: My app is shared on Twitter every day. What should I do?
This is a bad idea. You have to have a plan if you have a for-profit open source product. You need to give contributors something so they don't feel like they're being taken advantage of. It's complicated. It isn't as easy as just open sourcing it and asking for contributions.

Pull requests aren't the only way to do code review.

> Gerrit simplifies Git based project maintainership by permitting any authorized user to submit changes to the master Git repository, rather than requiring all approved changes to be merged in by hand by the project maintainer. This functionality enables a more centralized usage of Git.

shouldbeworking··on io.js 1.4 released – featuring debuggable ES6 promises
Not really unfortunate. Unlike with money, inflation of version numbers doesn't cause that much trouble. It just takes some getting used to. I've gotten used to the high version numbers in Chrome and Firefox, and I'm sure I'll get used to them in projects that use semver the right way as well.

shouldbeworking··on Govern Node Right
I hope this site, and others, serve to convince the community that Node isn't going to work, and to move forward with iojs instead. Even if the Node project fixed everything, I would still prefer iojs.

shouldbeworking··on Coinbase recommending third-party iOS app
On Coinbase's official blog they recommend a third-party iOS app on the iTunes store. This seems a bit more lax on security than I would expect from a wallet provider.

The unofficial app on the App Store uses Coinbase's name and artwork, and doesn't say that it's unofficial [2]. It's seen updates since Coinbase's blog post, where the author could have added this but hasn't. I also wonder if they've been making sure that they're still willing to say that they believe it to be secure and safe to use after the updates.

This is concerning to me, as a Coinbase user.

shouldbeworking··on [dead]
It has 9 points and some comments on the blog, so apparently some care. It exemplifies several patterns of job postings that are seen outside of Singapore, which makes it potentially useful for a lot of HN, while being in Singapore satisfies curiosity for some HNers like me.

It's debatable how much value there is in having a well-defined culture rather than one that just emerges, and also how to define one. I think the way the authors of this job posting define their culture is narrow-minded. A lot of people who aren't into a traditional lifestyle don't go out of their way to talk about it, in fact they lead a simpler life so they don't have to think so much about their lifestyle.

Edit: while I was typing this the number of points shot up to 15.

shouldbeworking··on Larry Ellison Will Step Down as CEO of Oracle, Will Remain as CTO
I don't see becoming CTO as heading for retirement. If he wanted to semi-retire he could adopt some other title like Chief Software Architect.

Also your mention of his eventual death sounds insulting. There are plenty of better things to pick apart Ellison for besides his age, and he isn't all that old. There isn't a single mention of his health in the wikipedia article about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Ellison

shouldbeworking··on “We've been acquired and Twitpic will live on”
OP said they "wouldn't let their users export their photos" which is different from archiving other users' photos. It is an issue but it's a different issue IMO. I don't think that pretending it's the same issue helps.
shouldbeworking··on Inside the Go playground
I was able to see several dozen slides.

They aren't very convenient, but keep in mind that the slides are merely a byproduct. They are in a form that was designed for giving the presentation, not in a form that was designed for reading on the website. The speech is missing. I tend to prefer video recordings of talks (like confreaks) to looking at slides by themselves.

shouldbeworking··on Notes on the Celebrity Data Theft
Isn't showing partially blacked out private photos still a violation of privacy? If the author of this post really wants to be white hat, he should modify the image (above 14) to obscure the non-blacked out part of the photo with a different color. I'm unfamiliar with that celebrity in the picture but if I was familiar with her work, it would feel creepy to look at it.

I was hoping the EFF would let its readers make up their mind on Adam Carolla, instead of praising him. This did, after all, accomplish nothing, except setting a negative precedent for crowdfunded action against patents.
