shostack··on Schedule-Free Learning – A New Way to Train
And here I was hoping for something related to how to approach self-driven learning and education when you have a hectic and unpredictable schedule and are trying to fit learning in-between things with the fragments of time you have.
shostack··on OpenAI: Start using ChatGPT instantly
One thing I really dislike about hosted models is how opaque that behavior is. As a user I should never be guessing if they've reduced a model's capabilities to save on compute for example.

This is why I'm excited for the growth of local model capabilities. I can much more reasonably expect that the model has not degraded and that it is using the full hardware capabilities it has been granted.

The flip side, and I recognize this is not a privilege everyone shares, is that being an older parent may mean better financial stability and opportunities. On today's world of housing costs putting ownership out of reach of many, inflation, layoffs, that can mean a lot in terms of stability for a family.

Celery leaves are actually delicious torn into salads or garnish on a stir fry. And broccoli stalks can be sliced and roasted or shaved into a salad.
shostack··on Job growth is booming across the U.S. but not in California. Here's why
If you consider Texas more liberal than California purely on the basis of home affordability it is clear you're not interested in making a serious point.
shostack··on AI-generated content, other unfavorable practices get CNET on Wikipedia banlist
In some ways I see parallels to space debris in LEO that create growing risk for navigating that space and finding anything up there.
shostack··on VATSIM: The International Online Aviation Network
Vatsim may not be the most accurate in terms of teaching you what to say, but it will get you comfortable saying it live.

I've had some truly amazing experiences, including the night before my first discovery flight at KPAO when KPAO was miraculously towered in vatsim (it almost never is compared to the major airports in the Bay).

I logged in and started flying the pattern with a very friendly controller. Somehow we ended up with a full pattern which I've never seen at a GA field in the sim.

Eventually we all started chatting, and turns out the controller used to fly out of KPAO IRL, and another local pilot was in the pattern. I got a bunch of great tips on sight maps for the pattern there, airport procedures and best practices, etc.

It sounds cheesy but it was one of those magical Internet moments of connection with other people that sticks with you forever.

Nailed everything during my discovery flight the next day.

shostack··on The killer app of Gemini Pro 1.5 is using video as an input
This. I want an AI assistant like in the movie Her. But when I think about the realities of data access that requires, and my limited trust in companies that are playing in this space to do so in a way that respects my privacy, I realize I won't get it until it is economically viable to have an open source option run on my own hardware.

shostack··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
Wake me when I can get access without handing over my texts and contacts. I opened the Gemini app on Android and that onerous privacy policy was the first experience. Worse, I didn't seem able to move past accepting giving Google the ability to hoover up my data to disable that in the settings so I just gave up and went back to ChatGPT where I at least generally have control over the data I give it.
shostack··on Sora: Creating video from text
This is effectively what Amazon does. Provide the infrastructure to make money selling things, then let merchants de-risk their R&D into what sells best and would be most profitable, then sell their own version of it.
shostack··on Sora: Creating video from text
I'm hoping to see progress towards consistent characters, objects, scenes etc. So much of what I'd want to do creatively hinges on needing persisting characters who don't change appearance/clothing/accessories from usage to usage. Or creating a "set" for a scene to take place in repeatedly.

I know with stable diffusion there's things like lora and controlnet, but they are clunky. We still seem to have a long way to go towards scene and story composition.

Once we do, it will be a game changer for redefining how we think about things like movies and television when you can effectively have them created on demand.

Can you even access the opt out though before it hoovers up your messages and logs from the last 90 days? I didn't proceed because that didn't seem possible.

The word "future" in what you quoted is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

My assumption is you have to give it access to all your data, which it then processes for before you can opt out of it.

Scud running? No thanks.
shostack··on FAA Aviation Maps
The simbrief and navigraph integrations directly into the working title Garmin avionics is amazing. I can link my flight plan easily and see charts on the screen in the glass cockpit in VR. And if I'm flying steam gauge I can have a VR overlay located near my lap that is like having an iPad with Foreflight on my kneeboard.

How do apps like VatView and the link know where to place the airspace boundaries then?
shostack··on The worst users come from referral programs, free trials, coupons
I used to run an affiliate program for a company and one of the top affiliates who was making a large sum annually from the program before I took over got quite hostile when I pointed out the bulk of their referrals were from coupon sites. They started trying to intimidate us about the backlash that would ensue if we took action and even brought a very physically intimidating person into a meeting for no other apparent purpose other than to be intimidating.

The data was very cut and dry and in blocking coupon sites in our terms as one of the first actions I took in taking it over they lost a very high double digit % of their revenue from the program overnight.

Surprise surprise, overall trials and subscription rates didn't change and channel ROI improved significantly. Goodbye Felicia.

Do I need to allow access through noscript to googlesyndication.com for this to work? If so, why? It doesn't seem to work when I enable the root domain in Firefox on mobile.
shostack··on Why is machine learning 'hard'? (2016)
When I was working on a pet project to teach myself how to build a scoring model based on analysis of images on mobile I went down a whole rabbit hole on how to detect where the image is in a photo to draw a box around it and then compress to 500x500.

In reality, if I'm using a phone,I can just create a square frame for the user to center the image in and then compress.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the one you don't get to till after you slog through the harder approach. I'm glad I learned a bit about image processing with Pytorch along the way.

Uh... What time do shuttles leave? At a lot of companies that is when people leave to catch their shuttle, where they may continue working.
shostack··on Please don't make me use another QR code restaurant menu
A local restaurant did this. However in making you pay for your order up front they also ask for the tip then. And they play the usual games to try and get you to pay more than the typical 20%. The server drops your food off and you never see them again. It's a horrible experience.
