shortstuffsushi··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
> for the pay that it offers

Could you explain your thinking here? Cops are, at least near me, paid quite well, have good perks, get paid a ridiculous amount of overtime, and have pensions. This, plus the power of the position, seems obviously attractive.

shortstuffsushi··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
> you'd take it as -- at best -- off-topic and cruelly dismissive of the core issue

Add to that... if they said "you just don't understand -- this isn't the movies, you don't just stab a person once and they die, you have to keep stabbing until they stop moving. I don't think any of you understand, you don't have the training I do to see that clearly this is a reasonable course of action for anyone who is intending to stab someone"

This whole thread is an absolute absurdity, to keep falling back on "you just don't get it, it's not the movies" and "we're focusing on the wrong thing, the number of bullets" when .. no one here is focusing on the numbers of bullets except the person arguing with, in most cases, himself.

shortstuffsushi··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
As others have responded to you, and like you even said - "fire until there is no further threat" doesn't mean mag dump. However, that is what police do. This is a sign of very poor situational awareness, not "sticking to training." You wonder why others are arguing with you and downvoting you, you're speaking with authority on something, but you're at odds with yourself. You are correct that number of rounds fired is not a good indicator of the "intensity" of a firefight, you are incorrect that this is "normal" or "reasonable" behavior on the part of the police. Continuing to reply to everyone with "it's not a movie, I have training, the rest of you don't" etc doesn't aid your claims, it just makes you sound smug while.. still being wrong.
shortstuffsushi··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
For what it's worth, I was agreeing with you by posting their standard service pistol. However, I am also quite familiar with firearms, and strongly disagree with your belief that this is "the proper technique," it's just what police are currently (improperly, in my very strong opinion) trained to do.
shortstuffsushi··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
For reference, the LAPD standard issue pistol seems to be a FN 509 MRD-LE, with a magazine capacity of 17. Because police seem to be trained to empty their entire magazine any time they fire, that would be about in line with this number.
shortstuffsushi··on Red Dead Redemption 2 fan with 6k hours on Stadia begs for character transfer
Hmm, this seems like a mixed bag. Exercise is great, but given your mention of it becoming addictive, it seems like you're replacing one thing with another - there are plenty of people who spend too much time in the gym, or marathon training, etc, to the detriment of relationships and other life responsibilities. People who are "fanatic golfers" often do so at some expense, both emotional and monetary, of their family. Replacing addiction with addiction is still addiction, albeit potentially better for your health.

The site linked in the post list these as natural disasters
shortstuffsushi··on Days Since Incident – tracker of natural disasters on Earth
According to the "quick bulletin" on the bottom, this seems to be a downstream effect of a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred. I suppose that will generally be the case for a tsunami, something usually drives it. In this case, it appears they're assigning 0 deaths (or stats) to the tsunami, but 2 deaths for the "total effects."
shortstuffsushi··on H.R.2184 – End Oil and Gas Tax Subsidies Act
For what it's worth, unless I'm missing something, this was introduced late last March (2021) and has gone no where since. So slightly different climate at the time.
shortstuffsushi··on Show HN: Pornpen.ai – AI-Generated Porn

shortstuffsushi··on Agile projects have become waterfall projects with sprints
This has been my experience as someone who has worked at a variety of large and small companies. Do you have a (generally B2B) product to market, with fixed release increments, and features set by some external marketing / sales team? Your agile is probably going to be "that agile." Are you a small company developing a new product that you don't fully understand yet as you're still developing it? Your agile will probably be closer to the experience people are seeking.
shortstuffsushi··on More energy on less land: The drive to shrink solar’s footprint
It's funny you linked to buyrealgas - I had been trying to avoid them since they seem a bit.. radically anti-ethanol ("first of all, we're literally burning our food!"). Anyway... never heard of using av gas in a lawn mower, that sounds crazy to me. Maybe I'm just hugely naive on small motor mechanics, but the difference between standard, 10% eth 87 and premium eth free 91 seems to be about 0, performance wise, and if you end up cleaning the engine once every year or two anyway... idk. I think I mentioned above, but my frame of reference is Wisconsin. Outside of Milwaukee/Waukesha county, most gas stations sell eth free premium, and many people here actually do make the trip to get it.
shortstuffsushi··on More energy on less land: The drive to shrink solar’s footprint
> unleaded gasoline needs something to raise its octane rating

Probably naive, what does this mean? There are unleaded gases for sale that are ethanol free at some gas stations (typically only the premium / highest octane) which are often preferred for small motors / high end engines. I don't think they mix in lead, is MTBE what is added instead in those cases? I haven't heard of MTBE before.

ETA: I've been able to find a number of sites for WI gas stations saying "we have ethanol free," but none of them mention what is added in its place (if anything).

This seems like a particularly uncharitable interpretation from the context of the post.

shortstuffsushi··on Wet/Dry Vacuum Buying Guide (2019)
I might be naively interpreting this, but isn't "ownership" of a brand different than manufacturing? For instance, TTI owns Milwaukee, Ryobi... etc, but if I understand correctly, they each still manufacture independently. This would be different from the car manufacturers, where the actual components put into the car are often the same between differing brands under one larger owner (Nissan and Infiniti for instance)

For what it's worth, what I would call the "fake SUV" from Ford (the Escape) is listed starting @27k. The Explorer, you might call a real SUV, starts @35k.
shortstuffsushi··on Productivity porn
I bought a new F-150, XL edition (lowest) in 2020 for 29k, just for reference. On the Ford site, it appears the new models at a similar trim level are about 31k. Most people don't buy the baseline "work truck," which is what mine is (4x2, 3.3L, 8ft bed, short cab), but they don't have to be 40k. Add 4x4 and any level of trim and you're there, though.
shortstuffsushi··on The hero's journey of getting laid off
Definitely, and I don't mean it to sound like these people couldn't be making better choices, but once you've dug your hole deep enough, it's hard to ever get to a point where you can be "safe" from this sort of thing. Even if they knew, for example, that the company was shutting down for a month starting in six months, the likelihood of being able to stow away ~ two paychecks during that window is quite small.
shortstuffsushi··on The hero's journey of getting laid off
Calling it a "predictable eventuality" implies the victim is at fault for not preparing. I have a number of friends (of course, not software devs) who are aware that their company may at any point dump them (one company goes even so far as to say regularly "everyone is replaceable," and I have not been able to talk said friend out of leaving...). Due to a variety of reasons / excuses, they can't or won't leave these companies, and are not financially well off, so when it does come, they're going to be SOL. It's not un-preparedness, it's inability to get ahead of it. Yes, some of them could be making better fiscal decisions, but others are trapped by kids, medical conditions.. etc.
shortstuffsushi··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
I think this is interesting for two reasons. One, I tend to agree that, in my main feed, I want to see just what I've subscribed to, in the most to least recent order, that's it. I come in to see what's new, and am probably done after that. Two, on the chance that I want to spend more time in the app, there is a "Discover" or "Explore" tab for exactly this. The feature they're forcing into the main screen exists, but apparently doesn't drive enough views by itself.
shortstuffsushi··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
Yeah, this is frustrating. My content isn't just my tastes, it's my taste + sex because <20-40 yo male>. So, I don't really feel good even opening the explore tab anywhere that isn't private, because there's a good chance there will be questionable content.
shortstuffsushi··on Jim Thorpe reinstated as sole winner of 1912 Olympic gold medals
This feels like the correct decision, but not one of much value. Jim Thorpe died in 1953, nearly 70 years ago. Their previous ruling was in 1982, nearly 30 years after his death. I'm not sure who gained from the ruling in either case, perhaps his family was made to feel better by it, although I doubt they were satisfied by the "co-winner" title? By now, they're a good chance his children have all passed, or are beyond the point of caring as well.
shortstuffsushi··on Tell HN: Upwork has an impersonation problem
Yeah, I was thinking about this process as well (did it about 10 years ago now when it was still E-lance, I think... wow). I guess it wouldn't be that hard to fake your way through the process, maybe the level of effort is worth it for the amount they're ripping off?
shortstuffsushi··on I got fired for unionizing at Starbucks and I’d do it again
Could you expand on why you feel this is the case? If conditions are "good," in my opinion, adding a union would likely add tension between employer / employee and add costs to both sides. I guess if nothing immediately changed, it would likely only add cost to the employees in the form of union dues, I'm not sure if a company typically pays for the pleasure of having a union.
shortstuffsushi··on I got fired for unionizing at Starbucks and I’d do it again
In an ideal sense, yes. Unions as we know them (including in this case[0]) tend to operate as separate entity / business. There are the employees, the employer, and the union. The three often have little or no overlap, so it just becomes another layer of communication / cost of business. They will likely be able to negotiate the things the employees wanted, but it comes at a non-zero cost to both sides. By contrast, if the organizing group had gone directly to the store management, what would the outcome have been? It's entirely possible it would have worked out the same, and it's possible they did that first - it's not mentioned in the article if their concerns were first voiced to management, or if they went straight to unionizing.

shortstuffsushi··on I got fired for unionizing at Starbucks and I’d do it again
> It's not about finding work for yourself, it's about making work better for all your colleagues.

This one is an interesting point that I have a couple of (unanswerable) questions about. She cared enough to want improvement, did she ask for some of the things she mentioned as perks of unionizing (like the music change)? She mentions that she was in the process (?) of a raise when she was fired, so presumably they saw some value in her (or just wanted to push her out of unionizing). I wonder what sort of options were available for a single store in a large, franchised company.

For some of the "location issues," what sort of things would she have wanted the company to provide? What benefits with unionizing would help with (e.g.) the OD issue? It seems like this store was going to be a non-ideal location with or without a union, perhaps seeking out some sort of "hazard pay" arrangement would have made it worthwhile for the employees.

My real question, I guess, is whether this was something that could have been worked out, as a group, with the employer, rather than unionizing. A company will in almost all cases be hostile towards a move toward unionization, but I wonder if there could have been, or was, any negotiation that would have been satisfactory for both parties.

shortstuffsushi··on I got fired for unionizing at Starbucks and I’d do it again
I guess there is probably some struggle because they said she stole something, so they have "reasonable cause" to terminate her. Can't speak to the others fired with her, but I assume they've come up with some other "legitimate" reason. As far as the legal aspect, it seems like she is in the process, and putting out news pieces is probably to help attract attention of higher actors, like the AUSA. I wouldn't say it's a matter of more/less equality, it's a matter of visibility of this single person which she seems to be working on.
shortstuffsushi··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
Old Navy / Gap have similar offerings as well. I haven't seen a Uniqlo store in the US, although their website seems to imply they exist.

Edit: ok, they seem to be in larger cities. I'm in the Wisconsin, I was able to find that there are stores in Chicago, for instance.

shortstuffsushi··on Wheel Made of ‘Odd Matter’ Spontaneously Rolls Uphill
Maybe I am misreading or misunderstanding the article, but it appears that this "odd matter" is a powered, designed robot wheel with motors that cause it to roll uphill (or rather, over a hill) when powered. That doesn't strike me as either odd matter or spontaneous, or at least not in the sense that I expect from the headline.
