shockzzz··on How did people sleep in the Middle Ages?
I was fascinated with sleeping patterns in college, and I came across that book. I decided to try out the sleeping pattern, and it's really an incredible experience. The time between first sleep and second sleep is really cool. Very meditative. Incredible lonely, yet peaceful. I'd recommend that people try it out.

Sounds like they're about to throw out Kanban in favor of quitting
shockzzz··on English has been my pain for 15 years (2013)
> One of the things that shocked me the most with my experience with the English language is how not mastering a language can switch you into an introvert.

Too real. I've spent some time in Italy where, due to my broken Italian, I was very much so an introvert. People noticed it too when Americans would come by and I'd talk to them - they said I "became a different person."

shockzzz··on Tech Is Eating Media – Now What?
OP is probably right. Though it doesn't seem radically different than what's happened with journalism before, as alluded to regarding TV. I'm sure it happened with print, and I'm sure it happened with whatever existed before that.

The Golang GC is "better" than the JVM GC, according to this blog post?

Though I think it's suggesting that the Golang GC is easier to tune and configure

Can anyone link a reference for known performance issues in Java? And is it issues in Java or the JVM?
shockzzz··on Ask HN: How do you feel about ad blockers?
Ditto with not wanting to be tracked by "targeted advertising." It's like, the one thing the Snapchat CEO believes that I agree with - it's just plain creepy.
shockzzz··on RethinkDB 2.1 is out: high availability
Uhhh what? "Added support for Jepsen tests" shouldn't mean "we sent Kyle a pull request"

That seems like deceptive marketing to me. Once the pull request is merged, then you can make that claim.

Here's the open PR for Jepsen: https://github.com/aphyr/jepsen/pull/70

Interesting. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

shockzzz··on Parallels Between Math and Software Engineering
Context: I never did too well in statistics, and in general I was always pretty bad at understanding simple Math notation like sigma notation, multi-variate calc, or linear algebra.

Here's the Hokusai paper: http://www.auai.org/uai2012/papers/231.pdf

And here's an implementation: https://github.com/dgryski/hokusai

For me to understand the paper, I had to go through the code to piece out the Math jargon, even though the Math behind it is really quite simple. Another way of saying this is, "I'm dumb," sure. Not gonna argue with anyone there.

Though I still think it's curious why it's easier for me to understand a concept through code than it is through Math. It's sort of reminiscent of when you first learned Algebra, your teacher would tell you to replace the variable with an easy number and work through it to understand the mechanics of equations.

I think code is an example of that - literally working through the mechanics of algorithms to understand what they actually do and how they work.

shockzzz··on Parallels Between Math and Software Engineering
I have, on multiple occasions, looked at math equations in CS paper and been like, "WTF?"

But when I look at the implementation in code it's so obvious what's going on.

Same reason I mentioned sexual orientation - they factor into how people are treated. And yes, different permutations are affected in their own unique ways as well.

For the record, I am also a non-white male.

shockzzz··on Why Invest in Tools?
There's some commentary here that's helpful, and some that's not. I don't think it's fair to say "Facebook sux lolz" when many of us work, have worked, or will work in companies that suck just as much if not more. Plus, this is just one engineer focused on a certain set of tools and products. Lee does not represent the history of Facebook's decisions. He is not Mark Zuckerberg.

It's totally fair to say, "thanks rich pplz, wut do WE do?" Though there's a ton of "rich pplz" out there that don't let engineers experiment the way that Facebook does. Perhaps Google. But the vast majority of these don't, I don't think:

shockzzz··on This Industry is Fucked
The reason why "trolls gonn' troll" isn't an acceptable excuse is that straight white men don't get told that people are jerking off to their conference talks.

Just google "Kathy Sierra" and see why.

shockzzz··on Grace: Graceful restart for Go servers
Doesn't make short variable names right. How do long variable names obscure code!! That's insane. There are many, many ways to obscure code, and there many ways to make it clear. Long-names is one of them.
shockzzz··on Grace: Graceful restart for Go servers
It's not what this line does, but rather what it doesn't do.

In the context of reading someone else's source code, the variable name "a" is inadequate, and I've seen it in many Golang codebases. It's like intentionally obtuse code.

Maybe I haven't read enough Go code in the wild, but it really feels like the C days. Yes, it's GC'd, and that makes a difference. Yet I can't help but wonder how much easier it is to read code from the Python or Ruby communities. I'd even go as far to say that it's easier to read code from the Javascript community.

shockzzz··on Grace: Graceful restart for Go servers
This line is indicative of what I hate about Golang code:

a := newApp(servers)
