shock··on Kotlin Compiler Crash Course
> crazy stuff like type-safe reflection - like Ceylon used to have

I regret so much losing Ceylon :(

shock··on Building a shared vision for Async Rust
> And I'm a C# guy, I wouldn't want to use anything else, it's Java done right.

It has colored functions. Every async function is turned by the compiler into a class with an embedded FSM. Async is viral in C#, so much so that even main() had to be made async. So, no, it's not Java done right.

shock··on Vuiet, Music Player for Emacs
I would do a memtest.
shock··on Mozilla plans to remove the Compact Density option from Firefox's Customize menu
> Why bother using FF at this point? Most sites don't work as well, and Mozilla seems actively hostile to my use case. If I'm going to use a browser that is hostile to me, I may as well get better website compatibility out of the bargain.

I feel the same. I am saddened that some guy from Mozilla now wants to remove support⁰ for user.js, supposedly to save a stat() call :-/

shock··on UK to depart from GDPR
> GDPR really should have dictated "agree" and "disagree" be of equal visual weight and button styling and dictated disagreeing to be a 1-click action.

It does mandate something to that effect: the user should not have to spend more effort to disagree than to agree.

shock··on Clubhouse Is Recording Your Conversations – Not Even Its Worst Privacy Problem
It's returning a 404 now. Internet archive says it's archived the page one time, but when you click to see the snapshot it says it doesn't have it in the archive :-/

shock··on WhatsApp alternatives that respect privacy
> Delta chat now supports some group chats, but it still has ux challenges explaining that you just login with your email address on the app and that you are not giving a server somewhere your email login credentials.

Yes, I've encountered precisely this with some of my friends.

shock··on WhatsApp alternatives that respect privacy
I wish more people knew about DeltaChat. It has WhatsApp's UI, but the transport is email.
shock··on Chris Sacca's Act 2: Lowercarbon Capital
Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

- Eleanor Roosevelt

shock··on Chris Sacca's Act 2: Lowercarbon Capital
I did not ask for his past not to be mentioned, I asked if it could be discussed in a different thread, as an optimization. It is much easier to join a discussion in anither thread than to filter out comments in an intermingled thread.
shock··on Chris Sacca's Act 2: Lowercarbon Capital
At the time I'm posting this, there are two comments related to the low carbon tech the article is about, the rest are about Chris Sacca and what he did. I for one, don't find much value in the latter, past the initial awareness of his past. Would it be possible to separate the two threads of conversation so one can participate in the thread that is most valuable for them and not waste time with the other?

shock··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
I wish I could run WhatsApp in a VM in the cloud via Anbox and stream the WhatsApp UI to the phone via something like VNC.
shock··on Wayland is not ready as a 1:1 compatible Xorg replacement just yet
I don't expect a stable application to receive many patches. How many patches do you think Xorg should receive nowadays and in what areas?

Is the data transmitted over copper/Ethernet encrypted?
shock··on Open-source, not open-contribution
Presumably the project you mention is open source, so you've not lost your time – the time spent investigating the issue puts you in a better position to fork the project an implement the change to your specifications without involving the maintainer.

I don't understand the anger, are you angry because he doesn't have the same opinion as you and doesn't want to make the implementation behave according to your opinion?

shock··on Delta Chat – decentralized chat via email
Yes, in Settings if you click on the user profile info, you can set the signature text.

shock··on Over 100 Scientists and Doctors Call for Increased Vitamin D to Combat Covid-19
My experience correlates with your doctor's: I had to take more than 5000 IUs per day for about 3 months to reach the bottom of the normal range for 25-OH-vit D.
shock··on Hungry men exposed to blue light are sensitive to Earth's magnetic field (2019)
> Imagine if humans had another sense we didn't know about all this time!

I read a theory somewhere that our sense of time is based on some cells being sensitive to low frequency oscillations in earth's magnetic field.

shock··on Over 100 Scientists and Doctors Call for Increased Vitamin D to Combat Covid-19
I would guess that it depends on what your current vit D level is. Also, depending on your genotype you might be a fast or slow metabolizer of vit D, which would also play a role in how big of a dose you would need.

I recommend the talks/interviews by Dr. Stasha Gominak a neurologist specializing in sleep.
