shmolyneaux··on U.S. Is World’s Most Competitive Economy for First Time in a Decade
The content of this article is based on the 2018 The Global Competitiveness Report which you can find here: http://www3.weforum.org/docs/GCR2018/05FullReport/TheGlobalC...
shmolyneaux··on Asterisks in Python
While supported, list comprehensions that are multiple levels deep isn't considered good style. There is an example of this in Google's python style guide: https://github.com/google/styleguide/blob/gh-pages/pyguide.m...
shmolyneaux··on Trump, Congress approve largest U.S. research spending increase in a decade
This article seems to claim the there is no national debt because the debt is owed to the American people.

This is wrong since it doesn't take into account other governments and entities outside of the US that hold treasury securities.

shmolyneaux··on What Made Lisp Different (2002)
For package management Common Lisp has Quicklisp, and Clojure has Clojars. I can't really comment on the "nano" libraries part though.
shmolyneaux··on Writing Complex Macros in Rust: Reverse Polish Notation
There is a common set packages [0][1][2] that provide macros that are more similar to lisp-style macros (when operating on structs). [2] in particular implements quasi-quoting in rust.

shmolyneaux··on C as an intermediate language (2012)
In addition to the ones already mentioned here, pypy, a tracing jit for python2 and python3, is another project which gets compiled to C. It's written in RPython, which gets compiled down to C.

RPython includes a jit generator that can be used to speedup new languages written in it. Pixie [0] is an example of another language written in RPython.

shmolyneaux··on Inventor Claims to Have Solved Floating Point Error Problem
The floating point error problem has not been solved. This patent describes a floating-point representation that includes fields for storing error information. The standard IEEE floating-point representation has three fields: a sign field, an exponent field, and a mantissa (or significand). This patent proposes reducing the size of other fields and adding additional fields to store error information. The error information would be updated by hardware during regular operations. The patent proposed adding a configurable amount of precision to the numbers. If an operation exceeds this limit, an insufficient significant bits signal "sNaN(isb)" would be raised.

Not only does this method not reduce floating point error, it reduces the precision that you have for any given number of bits.

Unfortunately I can't find any of the figures referenced in the patent to help me understand the novelty of this patent.

shmolyneaux··on Inventor Claims to Have Solved Floating Point Error Problem
Not really, the idea is to store the amount of error in the binary representation of the number. When converting from decimal "0.3" to this floating point representation, it's more like 0.30000000000000004 ± 0.00000000000000004
shmolyneaux··on Terrain rendering in fewer than 20 lines of code
This is probably the most impressive 64K I've seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWwNgVwQG1A
shmolyneaux··on Scala 2.12.3 Released
Yes, it is stated on the page

> As usual for minor releases, Scala 2.12.3 is binary compatible with the whole Scala 2.12 series.

shmolyneaux··on Blue Apron Plummets After Amazon Files for Meal-Kit Trademark
There are several reasons to want to reduce the number and size of landfills. First, landfills are very oxygen-poor, which promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria. The bacteria produce methane, rather than CO2 when breaking down waste. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 (though it doesn't stay in the atmosphere as long). Second, greenhouse gases are released in the extraction of petrochemicals. Reducing the new plastic created would reduce this effect. Lastly, landfills can have an immediate negative effect on the environment surrounding them if solvents and heavy metals leach out of the landfill.
shmolyneaux··on Pentagon Tiling Proof Solves Century-Old Math Problem
The banner image in the article appears to include reflected tiles.
shmolyneaux··on Kill sticky headers (2013)
This article was written in 2013, almost 3 years before any browser supported "position: sticky". I disagree that the blog is shortsighted, but as you mentioned, the bookmarklet should be updated.
shmolyneaux··on Uber Reportedly Promised to Cover Former Google Engineers ‘Bad Acts’ in Contract
Agreed. Another alternative is https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-23/uber-said...
shmolyneaux··on How I Hacked My University's Registration System with Python and Twilio
You might be interested in bidding systems for enrolling in courses. The National University of Singapore has one http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/events/module-enrolment.html

"All students are given an equal amount of points per semester to bid for modules... The allocation of modules is based on the lowest successful bid points against the last available quota for the module at the end of each bidding round. If supply (module quota) exceeds demand (number of bidders) for a module for any bidding round, the lowest successful bid will be 1 bid point. If there is a tie in the lowest successful bid points, the outcome will be based on first-come-first-served. Unsuccessful bidders will be fully refunded. Any unused bid points after each round will be carried over to the next bidding round or to the next semester at the end of the registration exercise."

shmolyneaux··on Luna – Visual and textual functional programming language
Very cool project! What license are you planning on using?
shmolyneaux··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
If you know your co-worker's child is named "Sam" you don't want to say "son" if she's actually a girl.
shmolyneaux··on Why do so few people major in computer science?
At the University of Waterloo in Canada, the ratio of CS applications to available spaces is over 15:1 [0] according to a Computer Science professor. It could simply be a supply issue.

shmolyneaux··on The Heroin Business Is Booming in America
Skydiving is actually fairly safe, see http://www.uspa.org/facts-faqs/safety for stats. There were 0.0061 fatalities per 1000 jumps in 2015 .
shmolyneaux··on UH Researchers Report New, More Efficient Catalyst for Water Splitting
No, hydrogen gas is less dense than hydrocarbons (at the same pressure) since it has a lower molar mass (volume is inversely proportional to the molar mass).
shmolyneaux··on IndieHackers.com acquired by Stripe
Software Engineering Daily had an episode[0] on fraud detection at stripe using machine learning. If you're interested it provides quite a bit of background information.

shmolyneaux··on Granary.pro – Beyond Bookmarks and Read-It-Later
This post is more like a first impression of the service.

This service interested me since it looked like it would be able to automatically add tags to links that I already had in pocket. But doesn't do this, but I thought I would share my thoughts.

With the uBlock Origin extension enabled on Firefox, clicking on the "Sign up free with Google" button does nothing. When searching for links I would expect that my own links would appear first rather than "Search results on Granary.pro". You should be able to move items to their folders from the search interface.

For the English version of the web site I suggest you find a native English speaker to review your content. Specific sentences that have issues are:

"If you stop importing the file into Granary.pro before complete, the processing will be stopped."

"Or do not you wonder where the web page you saved in Bookmark or Evernote is located?"

"Do you imagine the files that filled your PC desktop?"

In the help section: "How to delete my account: You may not use Granary.pro at any time. If you deletes the account, If you deletes the account, Granary.pro deletes all data associated with the account as well as the account, and the user can no longer use the deleted account."

shmolyneaux··on Discussions with Apple regarding license agreement
AMD does license to third parties, at least for x86:

shmolyneaux··on Opening a new chapter of my work in AI
Do you have a source for this? Searching doesn't yield any results.
shmolyneaux··on An advanced browser fingerprint calculator aimed mainly at Tor Browser users
Under the "Tor" tab it states that the browser should be set to a window size of 1000x1000 or a multiple of 200x100. Is this to stay consistent across all Tor users? I would have thought that 1920x1080 would be fine to help stay anonymous.
shmolyneaux··on How to pick a microcontroller
As someone who has used the parallax propeller, I feel like you a doing a bit of a disservice to not include some reasons for or against it.

Cons:

- Comparatively high price point at $8

- The custom 8-core architecture is more difficult to make full use of

- No other chips in the family (can't flexibly move up or down in flash size / IO / core count)

- No interrupts

- Uncertain availability, and may be nearing end-of-life (this is speculative)

- Programming in C is secondary to the proprietary scripting language SPIN (which has an interpreter in the chip)

Pro:

- The processor is open source under GPL v3

- Multicore architecture makes it easy to create systems that work concurrently

- VGA output

- No interrupts

- SPIN isn't that bad... and assembly code integrates nicely with it

shmolyneaux··on Rust's language ergonomics initiative
There is a porting guide for C/C++ [0] that may help clarify the differences between the two. I have not read it though.

shmolyneaux··on Rust on AVR: Safer microcontrollers almost here
A simple example for 8-bit microcontrollers would be concurrency issues in an interrupt handler.

Heap memory is still a thing for larger devices running on a RTOS, in addition to threads, mutexes, etc.
