shimon_e··on Riot breaks out at Foxconn's Taiyuan plant
How are they underpaid? Are you suggesting they would be making more money fulfilling a local economic need with similar skills and risks? China's economic growth is due to an oversupply of unskilled labour that are able to be trained at a cheaper cost than western automation.

Read up how BYD started up. It is very enlightening. The west had modern battery factories yet couldn't compete with BYD on the price of it's hand made batteries.

shimon_e··on Riot breaks out at Foxconn's Taiyuan plant
The Chinese have a mob mentality. They themselves don't even know what they are rioting about, most the time. The internet is learning that it is about an accident in between a guard and a worker at 10pm. Trust me, the internet is learning this fact before a majority of the rioters are. If you can really call them rioters, as it is more like a 2000 man parade with about 5 people actually rioting (see the video). No one is in uniform so it is safe to assume these are off shift workers.

The last riot at Foxconn started with a dispute in between a worker and a local restaurant owner. Ended with a 1000 man riot. Nothing to do with Foxconn worker rights.

Such riots can't be equivocated with workers flighting for greater rights. They aren't. They want more money. Most the disputes are about broken promises of overtime work, as the workers make their best money from overtime. The workers don't live anywhere near the factories. They just work there for a few years to take money back to the villages where their families and friends live. They want money to improve families living conditions, not the factory that they don't give a damn about. They would trade factory conditions for more money almost any time, as the factory conditions are just temporary for them. They want to reach their goal of saving $X, go home, and enjoy their lives with their family and friends.

What I am saying is not universal in China. The Chinese government controls migration and in some locations factories can only employ local people. In such factories labour costs are much higher and workers do receive much better working conditions. This story is not about such a factory.

Chinese factory labour is a very different demographic to what the west had. A majority of Chinese factories workers come from China's 50% rural population where the children are raised by the grandparents in exchange for ~30% of the parents salaries. As in, the first generation raises the third generation in the villages, while the second works in the cities. Chinese life is very different to what most westerns are familiar with.

No. If any affect was caused it would be made up with overtime in the next shift. If they need to they would pay bonuses. The few dollars extra verses a loss in sales due to no stock in stores...

Chinese riots are like Chinese night clubs. Boring and dull.

Example: Anti-Japan riots. 1000s of Chinese. One Lexus. Barely any damage even using hammers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKnuILXFVZI&feature=relat...

shimon_e··on Iran readies domestic Internet system, blocks Google
The far east seems more likely to explode. If you have been following the news going on in that region. China/Taiwan vs Japan (Islands) Hong Kong vs China (British Hong Kong flag and related anti-PRC demonstrations) South Korea vs North Korea (Missiles) Japan vs North Korea (Military threats)

If a war was to break out in the far east it wouldn't take long to get to world war status as America will be pulled into any war involving Japan or South Korea.

shimon_e··on Iran readies domestic Internet system, blocks Google
At least Iranian population is demographically and geographically more difficult to control than NK.
shimon_e··on Iran readies domestic Internet system, blocks Google
Is access to facebook harder to get in Iran than China? In China you can see ads everywhere selling VPNs that enable access to facebook. You can even get permission from the government for business to gain access to unfiltered internet. Some up scale hotels have done this.
shimon_e··on Iran readies domestic Internet system, blocks Google
I'd assume they don't like getting shot. A lot of Iranians have left the country especially in the past three years.

I recently met a Jewish Iranian couple, who left Iran 10 days after their wedding, because the Iranian government confiscated their property claiming they are funding the Israeli government. They told me their neighbourhood has mostly been emptied of it's previous upper class (Muslim and Jewish) occupants in the past three years due to the baseless polemics.

It sounds like the government is doing some population shuffling to protect it's control.

What is your average latency to your server? What is the maximum tolerable latency you can continue working normally? Do you use tools like mosh?
shimon_e··on The Talk of China
Most people are "meh" only those involved somehow care.

These are really small issues. If you were no one and got into a car crash no one would care. If you are the son of someone important to the federal government no one would be allowed read about it. If you are the son of someone important to local government then it will be all over the media as the censorship is the duty of the federal government.

shimon_e··on U.S. Taxpayers Are Gouged on Mass Transit Costs
China is very densely built. They're building metros under all their major cities.
shimon_e··on Intel researchers put WiFi inside—the processor, that is
One reason why it's a clear cut no: latency. Maybe for file servers but not for operating system and application files. Expect always to have a few GBs accessible by wire (even if one day it is included in the SOC).

shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
No as they need 30+ variants of the fonts to support everything right now and Google customizes them on the basis of user agent.

Hopefully in the future it will be a lot more simpler.

shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
The fonts themselves are cached. The CSS is cached for 24 hours to allow them to point to a new versions of the font.

This css file stops the parser till it is loaded and when connectivity to Google is an issue it hangs the loading of sites. See http://www.igvita.com/2012/06/14/debunking-responsive-css-pe...

shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
After reading your post http://www.igvita.com/2012/06/14/debunking-responsive-css-pe... It seems merely adding a media tag to the link tag would prevent webkit browsers from hanging.
shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
BTW, the hang seems to be caused by the block of the dynamic css.
shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
Thanks. Glad that Google developers talk their time to read comments here. :D

I'm reading your blog and wow it is very useful. Guess you are the guy to look into such issue.

shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
Wow thanks! I'd recommend this as default practice.
shimon_e··on Web Fonts Performance: Making Pretty, Fast
I have a problem with Google web fonts. Sometimes connectivity to Google is problematic. For example in China after searching the wrong keyword all connections to Google are blocked for 1.5 minutes. This leads to sites with Google web fonts not hosted locally to hang in loading as it waits for a response from Google. This has led me to hosting web fonts locally.

Was wondering if anyone has a better solution. Or if anyone from Google is reading this, could they place web fonts on a different domain/IP and pray that global censors don't list it?

Kinda nice to be able use cached versions of the fonts.

I only use China as an example. I have had problems with Google web fonts in other country and on bad connections.

edit: watching the video it sounds like by hosting locally I am not taking advantage of the different versions served to different operating systems.

shimon_e··on Foxconn Using Forced Student Labour to make iPhones
1) Students come from vocational schools that train students for skilled factory labour.

2) This isn't an iPhone assembly line.

3) NY Times shouldn't be publishing BS a week after it has been dismissed as BS http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/6/3297995/forced-to-work-on-t...

4) NY Times acknowledges that their source is BS by quoting another media outlet mentioning that it is a cable assembly line.

5) I can't comment on the electronics industry but such practices are very common in China as the vocational schools are actually ran by major manufacturers.

shimon_e··on 3-D Printing, robotics swing manufacturing might from China back to the U.S.
Many simple products are made completely by machine yet have been coming for a long time from places like China. Sometimes it is due to the Chinese owning better machines (e.g. mills in China are generally more advance than their counterparts in America).

3D printers are probably going to be a boost for Mexico and low cost countries in Europe. That is if they get their act together.
