shigawire··on Hitachi to double US production of small and medium-sized power transformers
I'd only heard of it in the context of a solar flare blowing out all the transformers and we'd be SOL
shigawire··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
More like a captive audience of people who have self selected for having disposable income that they don't mind being parted from.
shigawire··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
I agree. If you feel previous social systems of justice and fairness have eroded, the only outlet that seems reasonable is "democratic" mob action.
shigawire··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
Anyone have experience learning a new language in their 30s? I've tried and failed a few times. I can't tell if the time constraints (family, work, life) or mental constraints are the bigger problem.
shigawire··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
>Good luck finding a representative that is against data centers, flock, Israel, congressional stock bans and pausing and regulating AI, views overwhelming popular with the majority of the actual American public.

That is rapidly becoming Democratic party orthodoxy. At the very least there are a sizable number of Democrats who fit that.

shigawire··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
Democracy in business would be worker co-ops or employee ownership schemes. It would still be fully market-based, not planned.
shigawire··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
I can acknowledge that I should be vegan and still be unable/unwilling to make the sacrifices to do it.

People are flawed.

shigawire··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Competitive authoritarianism is a closer term that IR people use.
shigawire··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
But the people generally seem to want whatever the person who spends the most money on media says they should want.
shigawire··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
It strikes me how broad the range in work experiences are. I have never had coworkers who cared about anything besides getting the work done. The idea of politics in the workplace is foreign to me, but I know it is common.
shigawire··on Police officer used Flock cameras to track estranged wife 717 times
Popular influencers have talked about them more recently. I think it also coincides with the zeitgeist of "oh yeah my local politics are important and affect my life"

People are being awakened to that reality by the proliferation of data center projects where their local leaders green light projects that people feel will negatively impact their community.

shigawire··on Police officer used Flock cameras to track estranged wife 717 times
If you look up a family member or coworker (without medical necessity) an automated process will flag that and you may be fired or face other disciplinary action.
shigawire··on Rethinking Database Programming
There are tons of problems with this, but the simplicity is comfy.
shigawire··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
The difference is wealthy people get the care immediately in the US while the poor can go to the ED and get a bankruptcy.
shigawire··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
We still have Social Security for now. Entitlements are sticky for better or for worse.
shigawire··on US conducted mass spying campaign against leftwing and anti-ICE protesters
Oh no... Anyway let's feed, house, and heal our population like the Bible says.
shigawire··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
I'm not that guy but I've advised end users submitting tickets to prompt inject the importance of the ticket so that it gets triaged higher by lazy people only using AI and not actually reviewing.

Not sure how efficacious but I know the reviewer is just relying on the AI decision.

shigawire··on Third Drone Shot Down in Three Days in Romanian Territory
China is a bloc unto itself
shigawire··on Grok Build is open source
Trump seems objectively bad at his job by a number of metrics. So it seems reasonable that would be the consensus in most forums.
shigawire··on I Learned to Read Again
Can you read dense novels with this? I feel like you'd miss subtleties, but grasp the overall story or simpler books.
shigawire··on Parental device use and the adolescent-caregiver attachment bond
Maybe dumber phone for day to day tasks. Then another phone that only has connectivity by sharing WiFi from the first phone.

So it's only a tiny barrier but if you need it, you turn on wifi sharing and take out the "real" phone. Otherwise it stays unconnected.

shigawire··on Africans Are Turning to Starlink
>Elon voted the same way as 51% of naturalized citizens

Doesn't make him right.

shigawire··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
I have a certainty that I don't want to make a bet predicated on SpaceX needing to generate revenue from their AI products that is equivalent to several thousand dollars for every human in a middle income and up country.

I'd bet in SpaceX. I'll not bet on musk grafting in a failing AI business for financial shenanigans.

shigawire··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
I'm a different guy... But I think he doesn't care and doesn't need to care. His main product is personal branding and hype -- caring about how it works is hardly relevant.
shigawire··on The Boeing 747 begins its final descent
We've given up on the next generation of technology and choose to wallow in sweet hydrocarbons.
shigawire··on SoftBank 2026 AGM [pdf]
This makes me feel like a spend too much time on slides for my rinky dink enterprise software feature projects.
shigawire··on Americans express unease over SpaceX's influence on retirement savings
The problem is the stock is not valued based on the space part. It's sky-high valuation is based on absurd projected AI revenues.
shigawire··on Stanford grads walk out on Google CEO Sundar Pichai speech
Stanford students are criticizing Google for enabling Israel. If Google was providing support for Hamas they could protest that too.
shigawire··on The gamers taking on the industry to stop it switching off games
The good faith interpretation is that innovation is spurred by having some guarantees that your innovation isn't immediately ripped off. It allows for investing more into R&D.

I'm not saying the current system achieves that, but it is part of the justification.

shigawire··on Trump signs downsized AI order after weeks of reversals
Disagree on best for the country.
