shiftpgdn··on Nvidia Unveils Blackwell, Its Next GPU
Tiny corp/tinygrad has been working for a year+ and has raised something like $5 million dollars to try to get AMD chips up to speed to Nvidia, without much success. Check out twitter where George Hotz has been very vocal about AMD needing to open source their chips to allow someone to help them get up to speed.
shiftpgdn··on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announces new AI chips: ‘We need bigger GPUs’
Canonical is a ripe target. Canonical has been trying to grow Ubuntu and other tools in the enterprise world for the last few years without significant success, and much of the Nvidia devkit stuff is built around Ubuntu.
shiftpgdn··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
I don't entirely understand why you can't just have a motor move the door for newer aluminum doors. They aren't that heavy.
shiftpgdn··on Ice-free summers in Arctic possible within next decade, scientists say
We need to put the sulfur back in the cargo ship fuel ASAP. Since the ban ocean water and global air temps have shot up like a rocket, far beyond the normal swings in El Niño weather patterns .
shiftpgdn··on Singapore Airlines Concorde
I fly Texas to Florida pretty regularly for leisure with my kids. We all have clear/global entry. Our normal procedure is to pick 6-7AM flights with carryon only. This means leaving for the airport around 4 or 5. With a 2.5 hr flight that typically puts us out of the airport by 11 and generally starting our day by noon.
shiftpgdn··on Owners report rust forming on Tesla Cybertruck
Colorado doesn't salt the roads (for the most part anyway). They use de-icer, sand, and gravel.
shiftpgdn··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
I am currently on a team of a dozen people, I am one of two who are married and who has children. It is challenging to say the least.
shiftpgdn··on Cloud Egress Costs
I could buy a whole off lease fully deprcriated server and a year of colo with a gig link for under $4,000, yes. I would almost certainly see better performance than any cloud provider can give me too.
shiftpgdn··on EVs won over early adopters, but mainstream buyers aren't along for the ride yet
You don't spend time charging if you use home charging infrastructure.
shiftpgdn··on EVs won over early adopters, but mainstream buyers aren't along for the ride yet
My Audi e-tron now sells for $25-35k used (from the original $80k+USD MSRP!) I did not pay for the internet package, and therefore my car is now completely offline. I use apple carplay so the MMI/computer is mostly useless anyway.

I believe on Teslas you can outright remove the SIM that provides internet, and the car would function mostly fine. Used model 3s are in the sub $20k range now.

shiftpgdn··on YouTube Says It Has More Than 100M Premium and Music Subscribers
I pay $23/USD/mo for the family version in the US.
shiftpgdn··on Making a PDF that's larger than Germany
Do you buy them after you’ve finished listening?
shiftpgdn··on Are electric vehicles cheaper to own? Maybe not
It depends on the state/region as it depends on the underlying electricity cost. You can “fill up” for like $5-15 if you’re in a state where electricity is inexpensive and you’re willing to charge at off peak times.
shiftpgdn··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
I believe all the cray stuff is being spun down and discontinued.
shiftpgdn··on Xreal's new AR glasses are aimed at the Apple Vision Pro
If you are easily motion sick they will not work for you. They’re a great product though, and I love the idea. Unfortunately I move my head around too much when sitting still I get motion sick trying to read text.
shiftpgdn··on The Seneca Effect: Growth is slow but collapse is rapid (2017) [pdf]
Nuclear reactors and thermal depolymerization seems promising. We could probably mine every landfill site in America for a century before needing to think about something else.
shiftpgdn··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Niedermeyer is a pathetic member/leader of “TSLAQ”, a group of people that think all of Tesla sales are fake, that Tesla is a large scale financial fraud like Madoff, and other completely insane theories. He has made it his full time job (literally) to disparage Tesla and other EV manufacturers.
shiftpgdn··on Mistral 7B Fine-Tune Optimized
Apologies, that's what I get for skimming through the thread.
shiftpgdn··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
Using Texas as an example:

10-80% on a Model S/X is 70kwh. Rate billed to customers will vary from 30-50c/kwh at time of charge. Spot in Texas typically ranges from 5c to 15c/kwh. Assuming charge equipment is fully depreciated all they need to pay is maintenance and network cost, which is marginal across a bank of 20 chargers.

70kwh x 25c = $17.50.

shiftpgdn··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
In states where they are registered as an energy provider? A lot. A 10-80% charge will net Tesla $20. Comparatively a gas station that refills a midsize car with a 20 gallon tank will only net $6.
shiftpgdn··on Cloud TPU v5p and AI Hypercomputer
I understand that and am calling that claim into question.
shiftpgdn··on Cloud TPU v5p and AI Hypercomputer
You must not have been spending million per year. A friend's company spends 10 million/year with GCP, which isn't huge, and can have an engineer from any group in a meeting the next day after a high priority issue.

How frequently are you engaging your account reps? You should be able to get the ear of a PM within 48 hours in most cases.

shiftpgdn··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
TikTok found all of those people very quickly, they famously don't use a public cloud provider. Infra isn't magic.
shiftpgdn··on Advertiser exodus expected to deeply impact X ad revenue, analysis indicates
Nature abhors a vacuum. If the ad displays are worthwhile then advertisers will be drawn to use X regardless of the audience or what their ads are displayed next to. There is a porn shop in my city with a Coca-Cola billboard above it because it's on the most major thoroughfare.
shiftpgdn··on Electric vehicle battery prices are falling faster than expected
Western market Volvos are made by the "original" Volvo with minimal Geely influence. For now anyway.
shiftpgdn··on At SpaceX, worker injuries soar in Elon Musk's rush to Mars
This is unquestionably a hit piece. I’ve been to Boca Chica and their safety standards seem leagues ahead of oil and gas.

shiftpgdn··on Tesla announces Cybertruck deliveries in November, with 125k production capacity
Tesla is one of the few companies that does not allow lease buyouts.
shiftpgdn··on Apple plans to update iPhones in-store without opening the boxes
I have been saying for years the next move for Apple is to ditch the charge port entirely. It makes the phone significantly more secure as well since Cellebrite, elcomsoft, etc rely on the lighting port /usb-c for mobile forensics work.
