shermablanca··on Experiments in Making Cocktail Ice
I’ve purchased this one[1] and it makes almost perfect cubes of ice that are very clear and melt evenly and slowly. In my cocktail glass it is so flat that the whiskey does not permeate the bottom. The result is a beautifully clear square in the center of my glass when looking at it from above.

Trick is to let the ice temper for a few minutes to acclimate to the room temperature before pouring your drink over it. Otherwise it will crack. Also good to spin it a few times in your glass to melt it a bit to get it perfectly flat.

shermablanca··on A Critical Discussion of React and Spas with Alex Russell and Theo Browne
Alex Russell[1] was an early member of the Chrome team, a 3-time elected member to the W3C Technical Architecture Group from 2013 - 2019, and a representative to TC39 from 2006 - 2017. Lately he has been very critical of Single-page Apps (SPAs) and React, going so far as to call the past 10 years a "lost decade"[2].

If a random person were to say these things, we could almost certainly ignore them. But when someone with these credentials feels this strongly about a technology, we should consider the argument, and try to understand the thought process that resulted in these conclusions. Unfortunately, these criticisms have largely gone unchallenged — perhaps due in part to the medium in which they are mostly found (Twitter), which doesn't exactly facilitate nuance and empathy.

Fortunately, this is where in-person events thrive. We can bring two people together who have different experiences, opinions, and perspectives, and have a civil conversation to bridge understanding, increase empathy, and establish brightlines. Theo Browne[3] is one person who does not shy away from controversy, and we are delighted to feature him as the person taking up this mantle, to discuss the merits & limitations of single-page applications and, more specifically, React.

Hosting a Reactjs meetup this Wednsesday 9/21 if anyone is interested in frontend. We had a great meetup last month with about 80 people in person!

shermablanca··on Ask HN: Where to meet people who are interested in building a company together?
This is why SF was so amazing in its heyday (still is, but much less than pre-pandemic days). Just being here offered so many opportunities for networking, and it compounded the longer you stayed and were actively going out.

I would say that in today's remote-first world, building in public (and learning in public[1]) is the best way to get the attention of the stakeholders you desire -- not just prospective cofounders, but also investors, customers, partners, and contributors. (An aside -- this is one of many reasons I believe that commercial open source in particular has a very bright future.)

Some tangible ideas: Be active on twitter, start a podcast, write blog posts, stream on YT, deliver meetup/conference talks. Once you are more in the public eye, living in a Tier 1 city is the next step as it gives you a greater chance of meeting the people who discover you online!

Happy to chat more if you'd like! This subject or specific startup ideas if you're interested twitter.com/benghamine -- DM's open!

shermablanca··on The Anxiety of Influencers
I don’t know your specific ailments or their causes but a lot of chronic pain and injuries can be resolved by working out lactic acid and knots with foam rolling, muscle scrapers and tennis balls. Look up on YT how to do these properly from physical therapists. I cured a knee injury that bothered me for over a year in about a week of exercises. Like magic. Same with an elbow injury.

shermablanca··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
I started a conference (Reactathon.com) as one of the various channels of income I had (entrepreneur, not FTE). One of my sponsors liked it so much that they asked me to run theirs. Now their conference has expanded to 3x per year in 3 cities, and I’m still helping to run it. And I now consider myself a full time conference consultant.
shermablanca··on Launch HN: The Lobby (YC W18) – 1-on-1 calls with company insiders to get hired
Advice: tell this story! Create a video where you describe this same thing, and promote it on the right channels. You can even add production value by showing b-roll of specific points of your story, such as footage from on-campus recruiting. Perhaps include interviews/testimonials from those happy customers that you mentioned.

Your point about spending thousands on education while simultaneously having an aversion to paying recruiters is especially prescient. When presented in this manner, it’s likely an aha moment (was for me), and is probably going to improve conversion rates.

Stories sell, and you have a good one here.

shermablanca··on In a Venezuela Ravaged by Inflation, ‘a Race for Survival’
Sorry, this is a result of socialism. Chavez undercut the middle class by giving or selling staple goods to the poor voting class, subsidized by the oil wealth. This undercut the middle class and anyone who sold things based on market supply and demand.

Source: I studied abroad there in 2001-2002 and I witnessed the overthrow of Chavez and learned a lot from the people in addition to studying the economics of the situation afterwards.

shermablanca··on Show HN: The Road to learn React – Build a Hacker News App on the Way
All respects to Dan Abramov, this is not necessarily true. Under the guidance of the right teacher, who knows the use cases and reasons for using redux with a React app, it can make perfect sense to learn them together. It's not easy, but most things worth it are not.

There's a reason why many experienced developers choose Redux to manage the state of their React apps. Specially once you get into async and server-side rendering, you will want or need Redux middleware such as Redux-Thunk-- or perhaps you'd like to take it a step further into observables with RxJS and Redux-Observable.

Perhaps these are all just a bunch of terms that you might not know that you need when you're first getting into React. But if you want performance and scalability -- and need an app that can withstand the pressures of today's demands -- then you may actually want to learn about all of these possibilities.

But sure -- if you're just getting into react, then by all means learn React on its own. But if you're running a large production app, I would recommend that you use redux and perhaps RxJS in conjunction with it.

shermablanca··on Vancouver plans to tax empty properties 1% of their assessed value
I was going to say this. These rules will drive investment in home automation. I'm also willing to bet that a large portion of the revenue generated from this scheme will be spent on the manpower necessary to enforce it.

That being said I'm happy to be proven wrong, but can we expect any sort of data to support a hypothesis? I'm not sure as I'm unfamiliar with Canada's policies on access to public data.

shermablanca··on Ask HN: Overwhelmed with learning front-end, how do I proceed?
Are you in the SF Bay Area by chance? We're putting on a 2-day React & Redux workshop where you build a full stack e-commerce app. We developed this workshop after hearing similar feedback from students frustrated with the lack of tutorials and workshops that teach you how to build a real app with React. It could help you to wrap your head around how to use React in a production application. More details at https://universe.com/realworldreact
