SG expat here. You're right the average salary is pretty low. I'm already on the higher end of SG salaries earning 120k USD.
Keep in mind that the tax rates are lower though.
I left Germany in 2012, moved to New Zealand, and got new jobs in Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong afterward.
However, I do regret not having spent more time with my parents and my sister. I haven't been back for the first 3 years or so, but I've changed my attitude quite a bit, and try to visit them at least twice a year now. I've also paid my sister's vacation in Hong Kong, so she could come for a visit(she's still a student).
I'm currently traveling and backup to an external hard drive and photos to Google Drive. What's the best way to keep encrypted backups of important files in the cloud?
It's not America's fault that China and India have insane birth rates. More than half of them live in poverty and many corrupt officials stole money from the Chinese people and settled in the US, Australia or Canada. Allowing more Chinese immigration would come with corruption.
It's sad to see that France and Portugal go this way. No one should support the government of the United Shit of America, especially when you know they are spying on you.
I had exactly the same experience when I still lived in Germany. I lived in a rural area and the fastest internet connection was DSL 1000. It wasn't possible to watch youtube videos fluently, software upgrades took ages and video calls were a pain.
Switzerland seems to be the only country in Europe which gets it right. They also have a 'real' democracy(grassroots democracy), which is a huge advantage, because people can vote for nearly everything.
I agree with you. It's one of the few things why we live. We(human race) would die out if nobody would have kids. Taiwan and Japan are two countries with a really low birthrate and you can see the aging process very well.
Indeed, he is a fraudster and an insult to every business man. I'd bet that the next post on HN is called "Kim Dotcom starts own NIC" or "Kim Dotcom purchased an own TLD".
Kim Schmitz isn't the smartest person and just has a second lower education. He isn't a hacker as well and not good with computers, so how should he notice it? He had luck that he got rich with fraud, but that doesn't make him a business man. He was and always will be seeking for attention to overact his missing skills and low IQ.
Seems like adblock got a new entry in the list. Seriously guys, aren't there any alternatives to ads? I just used a PC without adblock yesterday and the browsing experience was horrible. Popups, which hide the content and have no close button(appears after 10 seconds), blinking ads, flash ads and other colorful ads. I'd never buy any product just because it was advertised somewhere. Thats the reason why I still stick with adblock and noscript!
I don't think thats a good idea to outsource comments to a third-party platform. I don't like wordpress much, but one of the few things I like is the native comment function.
I download ebooks as well for several reasons without paying for them. I mostly get a epub version of a book and start reading it. This way I can see if I like the content and the style it's written in. I will get the book as a hardcover version and continue reading on paper at home and on my kindle on the go if I like the content after the first three chapter. So I have the advantages of both media. However, I wouldn't purchase the book a second time as ebook, because it's doesn't make any sense to pay for the same content again. And I wouldn't buy a ebook in the Kindle store, because I don't support this DRM crap at all. It's the same with movies. You'll have more disadvantages if you are honest and buy the movies then just downloading it from the pirate bay _without_ copy protection, ads & propaganda("bootlegger are criminals and have to go to jail for five years. Buy your movies").
You are absolutely right and it will even get worse. The govs log your personal data including fingerprints etc. I'm real skeptical that they are able to store this sensitive data securely, but I guess I'm the exception. The most live after the slogan "I'm a honest citizen, I have nothing to hide".
I don't like the powerline style for displaying the path, but I like it in tmux. It looks really awesome compared to the defaults(green background for the status line).
I don't get the point on app.net. They seem to be an alternative to twitter, just without ads and user funded. Ok, so far, but why should a developer trust their plattform more than any other one? App.net isn't open source like status.net/identi.ca, so if they close developers will be still screwed. I don't see any reason why I should pay money to finance a closed source plattform, sorry. Also the most people are on twitter, so it wouldn't make any sense to change to app.net. Maybe I'm wrong about it, but I don't trust them more than Twitter.
Do they have a _real_ health system? I doubt that the life in Cambodia is better than in Sweden. Maybe it's ok if you to go the country as US-American, but the Swedish living standard is much higher ;)
