shelf··on Should Oregon fund college through equity?
This is pretty much how it works in my country (Australia). Those earning under 55k are not required to make repayments, and those who never earn that salary do not repay a cent.

The government of course loses money on this scheme, but the people would tear down any government that tried to revoke it. It's an important and fair middle ground between national free ride and a USA-style 'sins of the father' system. Also note that the repayment amount is nowhere near the true cost of the degree, due to Conmonwealth-supported places.

If you have time to work your way through school at current US tuition, you are probably taking courses below your level.

I'd like something that deletes everything I post to those services after, say, 90 days. Allow an exception for photos.
shelf··on Bitcoin, Magical Thinking, and Political Ideology
There is no solution to the Byzantine Generals problem. If you control more than one third of the nodes, you can wreak havoc, and likely do what you please with the network.

You know who has that kind of computing power? States.

shelf··on Learn Haskell Fast and Hard

shelf··on I want the NBN
Given they mostly have business / law / academic backgrounds, I am not sure that anybody has ever put the case for fibre speeds to the Libs in terms other than 'this is what people want, and it is good.' The use cases used in Labor promotions were patronising to the extreme. Don't be surprised that they've concluded it is simply a 'nice thing' that people want but will loathe paying for.

To be honest with you, the things I am planning to do when I get a gigabit line are not exactly in the 'nation-building' category, either. I'm not sure how to fix that PR problem.

shelf··on I couldn't wait for the new Mac Pro
I run it under Xen with a GPU passed through using VT-d. There are dozens of guides for running it in Xen and also many guides for passing GPUs through to Xen guests. No problems to report. The OSX guest has full access to the GPU. Yet to attempt an OS upgrade though.

Probably best to leave out the garish tabletop and find your own, though.

White on blue is contrast enough, surely? You could also invert for black on orange, get your HN on.

'Sunk cost' implies an irreversible transaction. Bitcoins are highly liquid. Nothing fallacious about this logic.

shelf··on How to use Photoshop in a VM on Ubuntu
Given that Mac OS straddles these two worlds perfectly well and you're a working professional, why not claim a mac as a tax deduction? (If your jurisdiction allows for that)

As for your question, the answer depends on whether you need the GPU acceleration in your adobe products. If so, you'll obviously want to run them on your host system. Support is getting pretty good but it is not there yet.

Parallels and VMware have both rolled out JIT translation of DX->opengl instructions with a windows guest, which is quite impressive. I doubt this improves your lot, though.

shelf··on The End: NZBMatrix closes
I was commenting on this sentence, in particular:

>Once this notice is completed we are left with an impossible task of policing our indexing bots. Even then it won't stop there, there will be follow-up notices etc.

This seems to me like they're being told to actively police automatically-indexed content after this notice is processed?

I'm not sure how provable that 'knowledge of infringement' clause is.

shelf··on The End: NZBMatrix closes
I'll not jump ship until my downloads are frequently disrupted at the block level, across multiple providers. Pretty difficult to achieve, given the architecture.

Indices come and go... Much of the Usenet crowd know how to set up an indexer if need be. Perhaps a hidden service is warranted?

shelf··on The End: NZBMatrix closes
Despite being 99% illicit content, could somebody explain why this is not a case for Safe Harbour? Is this principle enshrined in any law at all, or is it just some neutrality idyll that we assume others share?

*Thought it was part of the DMCA

shelf··on The End: NZBMatrix closes
I haven't experienced any missing binaries or bad NZBs recently, neither from NZBMatrix nor Astraweb. Can anyone corroborate this?
shelf··on Show HN: Interactive SICP
A great initiative. I hope you manage to finish it.

I hope people extend the same treatment to non-lisp canonical texts.

shelf··on E-Ink, Largely Limited to E-Readers, Appears in a Chinese Smartphone
I have been waiting for a good Pixel Qi device (in any form factor, really, although a 13" ultrabook or 7" tablet or 4" phone is ideal) to emerge for several years, as it seems a good compromise between utility and readability, although E-Ink appears much better to my eye.

As we've seen with the GS3, though, what people really want are bright and oversaturated displays for occasional media use, rather than the 99%-of-use task of monochrome reading and browsing.

shelf··on Degrowth
China's short-term growth objectives are hard to criticise given that a good ~10% of its population remain below the poverty line. Its economic modernisation has already reduced this figure by several hundred million head. Capitalism feeds.

This 'degrowth' ideology seems to be moreso redirecting growth towards things that are more real, necessary and sustainable. Growth is fairly natural and should be expected in any healthy and free economy - not just in our modern 'advanced' juggernauts.

shelf··on Private git repositories with Gitolite and backup to S3 with JGit
I suppose this is a valid 'pro.' Creating users is nothing to be feared, though. It is possible and simple to set up a user to be refused a shell and subjected to resource constraints.

I have always placed my git servers in BSD jails to minimise the worry, but you penguins have no such option!

shelf··on Private git repositories with Gitolite and backup to S3 with JGit
I've never understood what exactly Gitorious / Gitolite offer on top of your typical git deployment, which includes git-daemon and gitweb. The rest is handled by ssh and your OS' authentication/permissions system, whatever that may be.

The website for Gitolite is not exactly clear on this, either. 'Features' include 'fine-grained' permissions and groups, the ability to set git options... A pretty long-winded way to avoid setting up git properly, given that setting it up is very easy indeed.

shelf··on PenFM: Fall back in love with writing via your terrible friends
Novel interface. Get the fanfic authors on board.

A tool like this would be perfect for school English classes or creative writing workshops (and alumni).

As for making the rest of us plebs pick up the pen again... It's a little harder than just giving us nice tools. Many aspiring writers (not all!) like to hide their work away until they are absolutely certain they will get good feedback, while this is like running around naked in the front yard.

Soundcloud has a similar 'get creating' premise and magically minimises that fear of failure factor. I'm not sure how, but it's amazing. The line between supportive and vicious is grey, blurry, narrow. Take care.

shelf··on ~/.osx updated — sensible hacker defaults for OS X Mountain Lion
Great list. Stripping animations out is always appreciated.

Does anyone know how to alter / remove the animation from horizontal motion between spaces? Particularly when using the keyboard shortcuts, this whizzing is disorienting and irritating.

I assume it is not possible, given that animation seems to be keenly bound to the trackpad 'peeking' operation and all.

shelf··on The FFmpeg/Libav situation
Would you call that low-contrast, though? My comment suggests that both colors are quite some distance apart, so despite the inversion, the contrast is quite reasonable. It just has the added bonus of, you know, not burning the crap out of my eyes.

You seem to have read something in my comment that wasn't there.
