sheepdestroyer··on Jim Keller suggests Nvidia should have used Ethernet to link Blackwell GPUs
It, not Ethernet that doesn't support the bandwidth aggregation you want, but the protocol over it. Multi Stream TCP seems to be one solution to this problem
sheepdestroyer··on Demographics professor warns that by 2531, everyone in Japan will be named Sato
Sure, but you also have to take the toponymic pov where it does
sheepdestroyer··on Console.delight
Unfortunately? It's a chance that there are a lot of "unprofessional people in open source".

And what whith the whole being "professional" as a value system, which I fear has often to be taken in the very narrow USofA centric PoV ?

I can't relate to the sentiment that everything has to be aseptized in order to conform to a very strict and dehumanized, bland and sfw (aka professional), just to cater to the work environment culture of a few.

If in your freetime you don't like something coming from an open source project that doesn't owe you anything, don't use/associate. If you don't like it in your work place, there's a reason you're paid I guess? Or change job, or do an internal fork.

sheepdestroyer··on Sora: Creating video from text
Contrary to text and the big piles of "liberated" data hanging around for anyone looking hard enough to grab, the training data for video seems to be harder to access for opensource / research / individuals. Google has Youtube, OpenAI can pay whatever fee any proprietary data bank requires. There's a moat right there that I can't see how to overcome.
sheepdestroyer··on Thailand discovers nearly 15M tonnes of lithium
Not taking the extreme and unprecedented rate of temperature change into account is either ignorance or disingenuity.

https://xkcd.com/1732/

It's probable that very few species will be able to adapt to such an abrupt change.

sheepdestroyer··on 'Impossible' to create AI tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material, OpenA
Intent matters in the tool's usage result ; be it a torrent client, a knife or a LLM. It really seems disingenuous to blatantly prompt the llm to regurgitate a precise work by "citing" a portion, and then says the equivalent of: "see, knives kill (as you can see now that I plunged one in this poor victim...)!". Don't do that then, knives are still fine to peal apples.
sheepdestroyer··on Does quantum theory imply the universe is preordained?
If true, superdeterminism would not permit them to make that choice to look around or not anyway.
sheepdestroyer··on Does quantum theory imply the universe is preordained?
What makes you say that life is not physical?

There seems to be no reason to believe that it's not.

On the contrary it seems most plausible that everything, including emotions, thoughts, decisions, are just chemical and electrophysical reactions. Thus deterministic.

sheepdestroyer··on AI system self-organises to develop features of brains of complex organisms
I have the feeling that concepts like money and property fit your description, with the addditional detail that much more than humanity has been impacted. I also feel that AI has a pretty good chance to be the only way to revert the significant material / psychological damages that have already been caused by those. It seems short sighted to not weight in the whole of our "playing god" so far, and dismiss the idea that we might better defer-to/get-help-from a different intelligence at this point.
sheepdestroyer··on DALL-E 3 is now publicly available inside Bing
I don't see how blocking "Counterstrike" is understandable or helpful. How aren't these kind of restrictions just infantilizing users ?
sheepdestroyer··on 1k Met Police officers suspended or on restricted duties
Going into a tangent here, do you think that the topic of police corruption is inherently political ? That would be a very political point of view...
sheepdestroyer··on Climate records tumble, leaving Earth in uncharted territory – scientists
Why do you assume flight? There's train from Lyon to Alicante. Drive time is similar. It's a ~12h travel, nothing unheard of for a vacation trip.
sheepdestroyer··on As Reddit protests turn to porn-bombing, advertisers face brand safety concerns
Advertisers should not have a say where their ads show. The level of global censorship resulting from prudish rules, on every platforms, is astonishing.
sheepdestroyer··on Thousands of species of animals probably have consciousness
Oh yes, my bad. I totally disregarded the industrial scale max-suffering chicken factories made by foxes.
sheepdestroyer··on Anna’s Archive: Open-source data library
Are you really asking what's the points of making almost any book freely available online?

This is extremely valuable to anyone who ever needed a book but could not easily get it for whatever reason.

You're free to contact book clubs from all over the world to locate and trade paper ones with you if you're not in a hurry, but you obviously don't depend on getting the ressource fast, reliably or at all.

sheepdestroyer··on Rocky Linux claims to have found 'path forward' from CentOS source purge
Like for the vast majority of use cases, unless you really need the bugs present in RHEL, you should be even better served by CentOS Stream than you were on old CentOS.

It's just a few patches ahead RHEL, with packaged builds using the exact same Infra and QA process.

It's not RHEL N+1 beta as some disingenuous people have argued

sheepdestroyer··on Thousands of species of animals probably have consciousness
Alright, maybe... But it's still OK to farm them industrially, with no repercussions for unnecessary suffering, since they don't have a soul. Or something
sheepdestroyer··on White supremacist changes beliefs after taking MDMA for a study
That seems extremely unlikely.

But anyway, shouldn't it be considered good form to keep random unfalsifiable beliefs to oneself since they can't be part of a conversation on reality?

sheepdestroyer··on A peek inside Japan's largest “Dagashi” store
Yeah, most of these things are extremely processed low quality stuff, very high in salt/sugar and additives. Even for the interesting snacks like dried calamari or candied kelp for instance, you'd have far better options buying from a normal supermarket.
sheepdestroyer··on LAION demands money from photographer who requested removal of photos
For a mostly solo volunteer projet, supported by an individual who works as a high school teacher (so, not crazy-silicon-valley-rich), any such abusive costs are probably unsustainable.

Your figure of "<10k" that you consider as "minor" shows that you have no idea how people get by. They were kind enough to explain in advance how they would proceed if the complainant pursued in their misguided attack, how more agreeable do you want them to be without similar complaints drowning them out?

sheepdestroyer··on South Korea government proposes increasing cap on weekly work hours
Why would French be afraid of being considered lazy, as the right to laziness has already been proudly argued for?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Right_to_Be_Lazy

sheepdestroyer··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
Drawings (in manga form for instance) depicting underage sex are considered child pornography in many jurisdictions. Prison sentences are given for having it. AI generated cp is most certainly also cp.
sheepdestroyer··on How a Drug Company Made $114B by Gaming the U.S. Patent System
Porque no los dos?
sheepdestroyer··on Hyprland: A dynamic tiling Wayland compositor
I want my systems functional, efficient, snappy.

One of the first things I do on a new device is to disable animations and similar "eye candy". On Gnome it's hidden, but can be changed with gnome-tweek-tools ; on Android it's hidden too, in the developer options that you have to unlock (7 taps on build number).

In both cases, those animations easily lose frames and are distracting, without talking about the frivolous power spending on portable devices, but they are enabled by default and not easily removed.

It bugs me to jo end that wrong priorities seem to apparently be the norm.

sheepdestroyer··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
We are talking 10s bank transfers here in EU, how much faster do you want it?

I would not feel at ease walking around with 10k€

In fact I would find it extremely suspicious if someone told me it's their preferred method to get paid. I would totally expect a mugging.

sheepdestroyer··on Ask HN: What are Larry Page and Sergey Brin working on these days?
On the contrary, I'm sure he's having a blast.
sheepdestroyer··on The “Oscar movie” is dying
Don't say "No one".

Usually the sound of action movies is too strong for me in theaters and I hate the experience ; I also never got the argument about special effects being better there. I can see them as well detailed on my computer screen, unless you're going to one of those ultra rare 8k laser room.

However, I genuinely really enjoyed seeing Michael Moore and Woody Allen movies in theater. I also loved seeing Lost in Translation on a big screen (and it's opening!, but you could argue that scene was going for the cinematic experience :p)

sheepdestroyer··on Octopuses caught on camera throwing things at each other
It's for a better sounding liaison depending on the preceding number
sheepdestroyer··on Show HN: I built a site that finds the cheapest place to buy a book
I was confused for a second too. It seems that fixed book price is more the exception than the rule. I just took it for granted.

sheepdestroyer··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
