shean_massey··on Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin?
I've always stuck with very local (in the same city where I reside). I'm not against looking further or even remote but I've never had to look too far. It's normally a question of hours between posting my availability+updated CV and finding my next contract.
shean_massey··on Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin?
Yes but not as an employee. I'm a freelance python developer in Brussels, Belgium with just over 10 years exp and 32 years of age. The jump from employee to freelance wasn't easy but I sure wish I'd done it sooner. Short term and urgent contracts are worth a lot more than long term (2weeks versus 6months). You need to know your worth. I always calculate "how much time/costs" will you save as a result of my software: I want a fair piece of that. I focus on those shorter contracts. This year brought me almost twice what you're looking for (before tax). And a good accountant friend helps me keep as much as I legally can. Next year, I'm hoping to finally hit the 250k mark. As an employee just 2 years ago, I was amongst the "high paid employees", bringing in 55k net a year as a comparison. I suggest you look into doing the same with either becoming independent or starting a 1 person company. Contact an accountant ASAP to get the best advice on which structures best fit for you.
shean_massey··on Show HN: Sending files over DNS PoC in Python
A quick and dirty minimalist example of how DNS could be abused to sneak data off of a compromised machine.
shean_massey··on The Tech Stack of a One-Man SaaS
Another one man-team here, I find it fascinating how our stacks have at least a 90% overlap. Also funny that we both build analytics tools :)

For your front to back integration: I suggest you look into django-graphene and reacts apollo-client. That small addition to my stack has, at least, doubled if not tripled my churn speed. Throw in something like Django-channels and you get a modern full async websocket capable reactive framework :)

shean_massey··on Kim Dotcom can be extradited to US but can also appeal
Wow, that's a flashback of my college years! Good times, thank you Kim!
shean_massey··on So you want to contact Brian Eno? (2000)
Nope, I also had no idea. And now that I know.. my life will not be changed in the least. I suppose it's a generational thing ;)
shean_massey··on Teaching our five year old to code by cheating
Epic, I like your analogy!
shean_massey··on Teaching our five year old to code by cheating
I love reading these. My daughter is only 2 but I've been compiling these tips as "learning hacks" to present as soon as she's ready since before she was conceived! I was also introduced to software development through "hacking" some 20 years ago and immediately fell in love (ms frontpage websites made in school and hosted on free hosting servers that injected banner ads.. my first ever hack was getting rid of those pesky ads with a bit of js back when "js is a dead technology, don't use it" :D) Ive since believed the thrill of "hacking" is the best intro into programming in that it's like a sort of gamification of logical thinking where you need to beat the game by finding and exploiting the weaknesses. Best of luck and please continue sharing your experiences!
shean_massey··on Cloudflare keeps sending emails over a year after account was cancelled
A better way, such as? You mean like writing email / tweet requests directly to those responsible? What's this magical alternative method? FWIW, this method seems to have worked where the reasonable and common methods clearly failed. He bought his own nails and cross when he promised action would be taken but failed to execute.
shean_massey··on PayPal is currently blocking all transactions containing the word “tardigrade”
In all software I've seen dealing with these issues (ofac, aml, Dow Jones listings, etc) the flagging should result in manual verification but you're able to configure risk allowances. They almost all certainly allow some bad transactions through accepting the potential risk/cost of actually hiring huge teams of manual auditors. Just being flagged does not always lead to audits.
shean_massey··on TOML – Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language
I had tons of headaches trying to get toml to do what's trivial in Json (nested arrays of objects of arrays of ... etc). 1/10 would not try again. For very simple, hear "flat" config it checks out. But then, so does yaml or even ini files. Anything requiring composite types was just a nightmare. I'd even prefer xlm before using toml again.
shean_massey··on We Can Do Better Than SQL
It took me a solid month before graphql finally "clicked" but there's no going back now, I absolutely prefer it over rest now. 10/10 would do again and do suggest everybody give it a try.
shean_massey··on Silicon Valley investor tries to create 'microschool' in yard, backlash ensues
Exactly. WTF is the complaining about. Alternative title: Guy wants to do the best for his kid while other parents wine about it on Twitter. If he wasn't wealthy, and sourced the funds from elsewhere, nobody would bat an eye. He'd maybe even be applauded for the resourcefulness. But no, he's rich, I'm not, it's unfair, boohoo
shean_massey··on Show HN: Givemeguid.com – CLI/curl friendly GUIDs
TIL something new, thanks!
shean_massey··on Don't Make Students Use Eclipse
My uni was nothing like this and I appreciate that. First year: every thing is terminal based, vim was taught, Javac was used by hand, as was nasm/ld/gcc. Only in the second year were we moved to netbeans and eclipse.
shean_massey··on “We already store data. In a database. It works well”
Check out listings on localbitcoins for your region. It's worked well for me in the past (keeping transactions off public exchanges). In my city, it's been trivial to move $20k dollars in a couple hours.
shean_massey··on Verlan: French slang that inverses words
Exactly! Translation is tricky business.
shean_massey··on Verlan: French slang that inverses words
I really don’t like the example of “monter en haut”. Certain verbs, like “monter” can have very different meanings without the noun.

Monter en haut: to go up (not specifically stairs, contextually maybe, could just as well be an elevator or a tree house ladder for example)

Monter a cheval: to get on a horses back

Monter un meuble: to assemble furniture (think ikea)

The noun here is not irritating, it’s essential.

shean_massey··on The Fundamental Problem in Python 3
Exactly. I stopped looking for insights as soon as I read that one.
shean_massey··on Ask HN: How to deal with impostor syndrome when you don't have tech degree?
As soon as you accept, not just “realise”, but actually and honestly accept the fact that there’s always going to be somebody more qualified to do whatever it is that you’re doing.. the imposter feelings will vanish ;) so yeah.. you’re not the most qualified. Absolutely all odds are all against you, in any case. So what? Just make the most of any opportunities you’re presented with and make your time worth while ;) That’s how I’ve dealt with it. Has worked well for me, would recommend!
shean_massey··on Prisma – Database tools for modern application development
When I first saw prisma I was blown away but after a couple months of trying to get a production ready system online I was just fed up with the "schema first" pattern. Wasted way too much time adapting the schema for custom types. I was about take it behind the shed and feed it a bullet until nexus/nexus-prisma came along. It was perfect timing in my case, I now love prisma again.
